CHAPTER-31(A JEALOUSY HEART)

Geet still couldn't believe it.
"Ved are you sure? You have only just met her!"
"No I met her when I went to Mumbai for the business conference some 6 months ago. She remained in my mind and when I saw her there, it was as if my heart said, 'this is her', really Geet, I am SURE."
Geet still looked at him with apprehension and seeing her look at him thus, Ved came to take her hands in his_______ "Believe me, this is no passing feeling, I truly am sure, you just tell me you are going to help me, Please, I can't do this without your help, please Geet------- please!" he made such a baby face that Geet couldn't stop herself and her bubbly laugh spilled over.
"Ok, I will do as you say."
There was a loud knock on the door and they both turned to see Msk standing there with a strangely murderous expression.
"Can I interrupt, we have a serious problem at the site."
"Yes, why not, you are not interrupting; we were finished as it is." Ved told him.
Msk looked pointedly at them still holding hands and they separated to go and sit on the chairs in the room.
"What problem at the site?" Geet asked.
"Some worker was caught stealing some construction materials and after he was dismissed he has gathered his friends and they have barricaded the east part of the site." Adi told them who had come in behind MSK.
"Do we have solid proof about his theft?" Ved asked.
"I don't know Maan sir spoke with the chief engineer there--------." Adi looked at MSK to continue, but he was sitting as if detached, staring at the carpet.
"Maan sir? Maan sir--------Are you ok?"
Maan blinked and came to himself, "What?"
Geet frowned, 'Maan Sir distracted? Strange!'
"Yeah the chief engineer is now talking to the labour union leader and will call back as soon as he gets some input as to what the leader has to say about it. Excuse me I have something to attend to." And so saying MSK got up and went out of the room. All three people in it stared at him surprised.
"What happened to him?" Ved wondered aloud what was in everyone's mind.

Maan stood in his office staring unseen at the traffic passing by some 6 floor below.
He came back to sit behind his desk and opened a file, turned the page and couldn't take in a single word of what was written in it, he turned over another page________
'Why were they holding hands-------.'
"Damn it! Damn it!"
It was no use, there was nothing logical about what he was feeling and even understanding that he couldn't stop the white hot anger he felt thinking of Geet holding hands with Ved and laughing so beautifully.
Jealousy was such a foreign feeling. So green and ugly to feel that he felt his chest burning. When he had come upstairs he had his head full of the problem that his engineer had reported to him and he had been thinking of strategies and that now time would be lost for this delay in work, he had been thinking that this had better be handled by Ved as he knew the vein of Kolkata better than he himself.
But the moment he had stood at the door and raised his hand and his eyes to knock at the door and had heard Ved saying, "This is no passing feeling---- I am sure." And he had seen them holding hands and Geet laughing_______ all else dissolved. His brain emptied out of all else.
He hated this feeling that he was feeling at this moment and no amount of logic was helping. And to think that the person for whom he was stewing here is not even aware what has happened to him!
'Perfect! Just perfect!'
"Why am I overreacting? They are good friends------- old friends, pretty close, so why can't they share something between themselves? There is nothing to think about and I am being unrealistic, yeah! Maan, behave!"
Calling himself all kinds of fool Maan walked back and accompanied them to the site where they all could successfully solve the mess that had earlier ensued. Coming out of the labour union office, Ved suggested that they all go for a celebratory dinner.
Few people of their team grumbled about going home including Geet. She didn't want to spend any more time with Maan as was necessary, but Ved was in a very good mood,
"Come on guys, I really feel like a celebration, this problem got sorted out so fast and it calls for a celebration.
Maan had already decided not to go when he saw Ved look deep into Geet's eyes with some sort of owlish expression and as a result Geet laughed and nodded.
"OK I will go, you don't have to give me that puss in the boots expression, u look so weird Ved!" and smacked him on his arm.
"I am going!" Maan said the moment Ved turned to look at him, without even realizing that Ved hadn't even opened his mouth to say anything.
Ved didn't notice anything but Geet did. She was confused with the way Maan was acting.

The next day MSK was just coming in the office after a visit to the site when he saw the office peon bring in a large bouquet of flowers and go in Ved's office. After half an hour he came out of his office with Adi intending to go to Ved's cabin when he saw Ved going into Geet's cabin with the flowers in his hands.
"Maan Sir? Maan Sir? Maan Sir!"
"Yes Adi."
"So I should go ahead and draw the papers?"
Maan realized he had no idea what Adi was talking about. He had been busy thinking what Ved was doing in Geet's cabin with a bunch of flowers?
Just as he was trying to think of something to say to Adi, Geet and Ved came out of her cabin and started to walk towards the front office.
"Adi do one thing, leave the papers on my desk and I will go over them later." And so saying Maan too went off in the direction of Geet.
"What papers Sir? I was asking you about__________ but MSK was already out of his sight.
Maan rushed and saw Geet getting inside the elevator and without another thought in his head he too marched in just as the doors clicked shut.
The moment the doors closed Maan saw that Geet was holding the large bouquet of flowers in her hands and he forgot all his practical, logical thoughts.
Geet was surprised to see Maan inside the lift. Hadn't Adi said that he didn't use the elevators now, so what was he doing here and why was he looking so angry?
"Geet I need to speak to you."
Geet was apprehensive of sending any time alone with Maan. She had convinced herself that her only hope of survival was if she maintained a purely professional relationship with Maan. So she deliberately misunderstood him.
"Maan Sir is there a problem with our project?"
"No, everything is fine with the project, but that is not what I wanted to speak about, I want to say something else to you. Something personal, it concerns just us."
"Maan sir, we are colleagues now, and I want us to have a purely professional relationship between us. So I don't want to hear anything that has to do with Delhi or us."
"Geet I am at the end of my patience, You will listen to me."
"I will not, and remember Maan sir, you r not my boss here, so you can't make me listen to you." And so saying she jabbed at the lift button again.
Msk pushed the button for the lift to stop and swung around to face her, " I know I am not your boss here, but you will still hear me out."
The flowers that Geet carried poked him in his chin and Maan angrily took the bouquet from her arms and threw it on the ground.
She had just been processing the thought that she could hear him out to know why he so desperately wanted to talk to her when for no apparent reason, Msk grabbed hold of the flowers in her hand and threw them on the floor.
"What are you doing Maan Sir" Geet was appalled.
"Why is Ved giving you flowers? Were't u just friends? What sort of friendship is this?"
Geet stared at him mutely with her eyes wide----------
"What are you saying? And anyway what I do is none of ur business anymore?"
"Is that so?
"Yeah and those flowers were given to me by Ved, those were for his proposal and you just_"
"Ved is proposing to you?" Maan gripped her upper arms and almost lifted her off the ground. "What did you reply?"
