~PRESENT~
Maan was restlessly pacing down the operation theater waiting area. The severity of the injury in the head area had caused major blood loss and a deep gash, causing the doctors to stop the bleeding before tidying the cut.
Kritika huddled in the corner secured safely in Arjun's arms. Her occasional hiccups highlighted her sniffs and her eyes red from all the crying. Arjun sat like a zombie, mechanically combing through Kritika's hair, trying to calm her.
Maan had rushed Geet to the hospital in the ambulance while Arjun and Kritika closely followed them. Kritika was aghast at the turn of events and cursed her idea to play a trick on Maan. She wanted to have a good laugh seeing Maan covered in wet and gooey clay but all she got to see was her unconscious mother with blood everywhere. She would never forgive herself if something happened to her mother. Her mother was everything for her and yet the last thing that happened to her was solely because of her selfish desire to get revenge from Maan. She saw him restlessly pacing down the corridor, worry clearly written on his face. She was indeed grateful to him for rushing her to the hospital and she started reassessing his hatred for him. Does her mother really mean a lot to him? She thought. If not he wouldn't look like he is ready to kill the doctor if he would make no progress in Geet's recovery. She slid out of Arjun's cocoon and slowly walked towards Maan. He was anxiously watching through the monitor that displayed her mother's name and the status of the operation. She stared intently at him for a few minutes before tugging his pant.
Maan felt a slight tug when he looked down to see Kritika standing beside him. He instantly kneeled down beside her when he heard her, "I'm sorry Maanji," she confessed before looking down.
"Aap, aap kyun sorry bol rahi ho?" he asked confused at her state.
"I, I," she began, a lump forming in her throat. "I didn't mean to hurt you or amma," she said softly.
"Isme aapki kya galti hai?"
"It was I who kept that bucket there to play a trick on you. But, but I never imagined it would end up with amma in the hospital," she blurted. "I'm really sorry, I promise I shall never repeat such things. Please?" she pleaded, tears welling up in the corners of her eyes. "I am really sorry," she sobbed shaking uncontrollably.
Maan was shocked at her revelation but realized she was just a little girl who wanted to play a small prank. He couldn't obviously blame her or scold her. Of course little children are bound to play pranks and she was no exception either. And it was his Geet's child, he could never be angry on the little one. He quickly pulled her in a tight hug, assuring her she was not at fault. "No sweetheart, don't say sorry. It's alright," he said rubbing her back.
"Amma will be fine right?" she asked in between her sobs.
"Of course baby, she will be," he replied although he himself feared the worst.
Kritika tightened her grip and held him hiding in his neck. She felt another soothing hand on her head and looked up to find Arjun smiling weakly back.
"Sorry mama(uncle), voh mujhe," she choked on her words.
"It's alright da chellam, amma will be fine okay?" Arjun reassured.
Kritika sniffed back a fresh set of tears when they saw the status of the operation as finished and that the patient was now being moved to recovery room and the doctor walk into the waiting area.
"Hello, I am Dr. McGowan and I was the one who operated on the patient you just admitted. I have good news for you Mr.?" the doctor asked.
"Khurana, you can call me MK," Maan replied.
"Well MK your wife is a fighter," he began but Maan was too engrossed in what the doctor had to say about Geet's health that he missed the wife part. "She was sinking while we were trying to curtail blood loss but she didn't give up. Finally we were able to stabilize the wound and the bleeding. She is completely fine now," the doctor finished.
Maan smiled through his tears, "Thanks so much doctor," he said gratefully. By then Arjun and Kritika, came to stand beside him.
"Can I meet mamma?" Kritika asked unsure of her mother's condition.
"Of course sweetheart, in a few hours," the doctor said pinching her nose before smiling and walking away.

~PAST~
Few hours had passed before Maan barged into Geet's room.
"Geet!" he called to grab her attention, as she was engrossed in her laptop.
"Ji?" she replied without looking up.
"Jaanu, mein tumse baat kar raha hoon, stop looking at that laptop and look at me," he ordered.
"Maan yeh kya pagalpan hai, agar main multi-tasking karoon toh problem kya hai?" she asked annoyed that she was disturbed.
"Geet, let me remind you that I am the boss here," he said haughtily, crossing his arms on his chest.
"Toh sirf aap hi multi-tasking kar sakte ho kya," she countered, equally with attitude.
"Geet!"
"Maan!" she yelled, getting off her chair to stand up.
"Chalo teekhai hum chaltein hain," he said grabbing her by her waist and starting to walk out of the cabin.
"Maan," she whined.
"Jaanu, mujhe bahut bhook lag rahi hai, I told you to come by 1 O'clock and have you seen the time now it's five minutes past one," he complained walking out of the office with her.
"Oh my my, its five minutes past?" she asked feigning innocence.
"Stop making fun of me and sit in the car," he said opening the car door for her.
She reluctantly slid into her seat while Maan took the wheel. He started driving when Maan remembered he had to talk to her about a latest issue. "Waise, I need to speak to you about something important. Mr. Raman called few hours ago regarding our latest project. He wants us to personally come there and visit his site before any major works begin."
"Accha? Toh are you planning or sending someone else?"
"Nahi Geet, this one is really important so I was thinking I personally take a look and I need you with me to assess a few things together. Tum mere saath chalogi?"
"Really?" she asked excited that she would now get some real world experience of the things that she had been working on.
"Nahi Geet, I was just kidding," he said sarcastically.
"Maan," she pouted like a child.
"Haan meri maa, yes really, we are leaving tomorrow evening. I have asked Adhi to take care of the travel arrangements. You just need to pack up and get ready, I shall pick you up tomorrow."
"Done," she piqued, showing him a thumb's up sign. "By the way where are we going?"
"Some place called Tan, something," he said unable to quite remember the place.
"Kya?"
"Tan nahi nahi Thanjavur," he said finally.
"What!" she said shocked.
"Kyun kya hua?" he said looking at her.
"Voh," she began restlessly twitching the end of her dupatta.
"Jaanu is everything alright?" he asked concerned.
"Nahi, I mean yes, but," she replied nervously.
Maan pulled the car to the side and turned face her. "Geet," he began, "what's happening?"
"Thanjavur is my mom's place. Vahaan sab hamare rishtedaar hain," she said tears forming in her eyes.
"Toh that's good news. You can visit them too!"
"Nahi, they even hate the sight of me," she said sadly.
"What are you saying?" he asked confused.
"Amma and Pappa went against their parents' wishes and got married. And after that Amma's family reacted very badly. Amma's father, my thatha passed away few months, unable to take the shock. After that, they cut all their ties with her and moved back to Thanjavur. Pappa and Gowtham uncle tried a lot to pacify the situation but it got worse. When Amma took me to Thanjavur to show them they refused to see me, saying I was unlucky. There is not a day when Amma doesn't remember her family, yet for our sake she never shows it. And Pappa too makes sure Amma is never reminded of their bitter past," she finished, fresh tears streaming down her face.
Maan was stunned to hear her sad past. He had no relations left in this world except his Daadima and Vicky but Geet had so many yet she could never call them hers. He felt pained looking at her sobbing and quickly wiped away her tears and slipped his hand under her chin, making her look at him.
"I'm sorry Jaanu, I never knew. Tum chaho toh we wont go," he offered.
"Nahi," she interrupted him. "Hum zaroor jayenge, it's just I was choked up a bit. I am totally fine now. Just make sure Amma doesn't come to know where we are going because she would never let me alone go there for she fears my safety."
"Magar," Maan began unsure of lying to Anu ma.
"Please, pretty please, mujhe ek baar un sab logon ko dekhne keliye man kar raha hai," she pleaded like a child.
"Geet I cannot lie to Anu ma," he voiced.
"Oh come on Maan, aap mere liye yeh bhi nahi karoge," she asked innocently.
Maan couldn't stand against her puppy dog face and sighed deeply, "Ugh Geet!" he said finally giving up. "Fine magar I will not say anything. Jo bhi manage karna hai voh sab tum hi karogi," he said still not convinced about lying.
"Hamara bakhra hain na, Arjun," she winked, already conspiring something in her mind.

"Nahi!" Arjun screamed, getting up from his chair. "I shall not," he said shaking his head in the negative.
"Please Arjun, tum kitne sweet ho, kitne cute ho," Geet praised.
"Voh toh main hoon, magar you praising me will not get me to lie to Anu ma," he said stiffly.
"Dei vena (Don't say that)," Geet warned.
"Exactly that's what I mean Maami, venna (don't)," he reiterated.
"Vena," she repeated, "vena, naa azhuthiduven (I will cry)," she said feigning tears.
Geet knew Arjun's weak point was her tears and she didn't think twice before using her weapon and he fell flat with her tears. "Geet," Arjun groaned to the enjoyment of Maan who was happily seeing Geet convince Arjun to speak to Anu ma.
"Haan main hi hoon, bolo," she prompted.
"Don't do this Geet. Going there may be dangerous if they know its you," he reasoned.
"But I wont tell its me, I'll just go see them and come back. isme koi problem nahi hoga, haina Maan," she winked at Maan to reassure Arjun.
"Voh," Maan began still unsure of the idea.
"Maan!" she yelled.
"Haan bilkul," he said instantly, fearing her anger.
"Fine, but only for you Geet," Arjun accepted defeat reluctantly.
"Thank you!" she screamed excitedly like a child getting her favorite toy to play. She hugged him and jumped in excitement.
***
Finally the day of departure for Thanjavur arrived. Geet's parents' first were not for Geet going alone, but once they knew Maan was accompanying they were satisfied and sure he would take good care of her. Although Arjun had a tough time trying to manage the place they were visiting as Madras rather than Thanjavur, he nonetheless made it look like they were indeed headed to Madras. Geet insisted they travel in train so she could get to enjoy the scenery and the trip but Maan had vehemently denied saying it would take too long and it was not too safe to travel in train especially at night to an unknown place. He promised to take the train ride from Coimbatore for there were no direct flights to Thanjavur. She had to give in for he had threatened to cancel the trip.
"Udamba pathukko di (Take care of your health)," Anu said for the umpteenth time before she let go of embracing Geet.
"Mom I shall be fine. Take care of Pappa okay," she said knowing Arvind would miss her a lot. Just then they heard a car honk from outside and came out to see.
Maan in his casual dark blue jeans paired with a white dress shirt walked out of the car. He looked dashing with his aviators adorning his Grecian face along with a think stubble, enhancing his masculine features. For a second Geet held her breath as he strode confidently towards her and her mother. She was almost gaping at his form when he came to stand by her.
"Kya baat hai Maan aaj aap bade acche lag rahein hain," Anu winked.
"Kya karoon Anu Ma, it's a manufacturing defect," he replied smugly.
Maan waved his hands seeing Geet as though in trance staring blankly. "Geet!" he called her to attention. Seeing her not reacting, he slightly shook her, "Geet! Wake up!" he teased.
"Huh?" she asked dazed when she felt him shake her.
"Wake up darling, I mean mujhe pata hai you are a sleeping kumbakarni magar hume jaana hai," he said with a lop-sided smile while Anu laughed heartily.
"Haha, very funny," she said peeved.
"Haan voh toh main hoon."
"Jellyfish!" she murmured under her breath.
"Come again?"
"Kuch bhi toh nahi Mr. Jellyfish Khurana," she yelled before running away, trying to escape his wrath.
"Did you just call me jelly fish again?" he asked running behind her.
Geet ran up the stairs and dashed to her room dodging him tactically. But Maan was close to her heels. She stood in the opposite side of her bed while he stood near the foot of the bed.
"Geet chup chap vaheen kadi ho jao varna," he warned with a murderous look.
"Toh aap kya karenge Mr. Jellyfish," she rubbed in further.
"Geet, I'm warning you, phir mat kehna I didn't," he reminded.
"Ji," she said coyly before giggling loudly.
Maan dashed to her side while she ran the other side, escaping him. Once again he lunged for her, only to be missed by a mere few inches. Realizing it would be of no use going around the bed, he directly lunged for her and pulled her down with him, causing both of them to fall on the bed. She gasped at the sudden capture while his hard body hit the bed along with her soft one on him. She tightly closed her eyes while he held her arms, securing her for the impeded fall. He almost cocooned her in order to prevent her from getting hurt while his hard body fell on the bed.
The sudden contact of his hard male body against her soft flesh made her body stiffen. Her breath hitched as her back brushed his chiseled chest. Her senses played havoc as his musky aroma spread throughout, tingling her senses. Her stomach tightened as thought it had taken a leap through a roller coaster ride. She let the warm feeling course through her veins for the new feeling seemed unnamable yet cherishable.
"Ouch!" he yelled at contact of her elbow protruding into his chest, bringing her back from her reverie.
Geet saw him vigorously rubbing his chest as though in pain and tried to get up, muttering a sorry. The softness of the bed and her incorrect footing made her once again slip back into him; this time she was facing him. Her face collided onto the crook of his neck causing her lips to brush his nape. She shivered at the touch of her lips to his skin while he looked down curiously at her. She looked away embarrassed at her thoughts and the kind of responses her body was conjuring against her. She once again tried to get off him, keeping her hands on his shoulders as anchor, only to fall again; this time right on his cheek. She turned red due to embarrassment and hit her forehead cursing her ill luck. She was about to try to get up once again when he stopped her.
"Ek minute, ek minute," he ordered. He caught her arms and helped her stand while he too got up, making sure they wouldn't fall again. She kept her hands on her chest to calm her rapidly beating heart before taking a deep breath in. "Geet, chalein," he called walking out of the door before straightening his dress. She nodded weakly before following behind him.
