The fifth season of Bigg Boss, the reality TV show that is the Indian version of Big Brother, is set to spring a strange surprise when it goes on air today.
Contrary to its normal format of having seven boys and seven girls as inmates in a house every season, this year's show will feature 13 ladies, and only one man: Bollywood baddie Shakti Kapoor, whose numerous on-screen avatars were serial molesters of women.
For three months, Kapoor - of pelvic-thrusts and lewd-gestures fame - will be the lone man on the show with contestants ranging from fellow-thespians, socialites, a VJ, a gangster's wife, and even a wrestler.
The producers are hoping how Kapoor reacts to them, and they to him, will add some spice to a show that's starting to become predictable. Here's the list of women who have their task cut out.
Pooja Bedi
Daughter of actor Kabir Bedi, Pooja has worked in several Bollywood films, including Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar. Perhaps best remembered for a safe-sex campaign she endorsed in the '90s, in Bigg Boss 2, Pooja had interviewed evicted housemates.
Raageshwari Loomba
Another blast from the past, Raageshwari has tried her hand at music, films and television. A former VJ, she suffered partial paralysis soon after the launch of her album Y2K in 2000. Fully recovered, her comeback album in 2006 was the first in India to be released in cinemas.
Mahek Chahal
The actress made her Bollywood debut in 2003 in the film Nayee Padosan. Her other work of note was an item number in Chameli, starring Kareena Kapoor, until Salman Khan took her under his wing and got her supporting roles in Wanted and Main Aurr Mrs Khanna.
Shonali Nagrani
A former model who finished fifth in the Miss India contest 2003, Shonali has done cameos in Yashraj films Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Dil Bole Hadippa. She is better known as a presenter of TV reality shows and cricket shows.
Pooja Misrra
A VJ and model, Missra had in 2009 filed a complaint against hotelier Timmy Narang and his actress wife Eesha Koppikar for stalking her for several years. During the reality show Big Switch, she had lashed out against her co-contestants Siddartha Khanna and Adam Bedi.
Juhi Parmar
The actress became a household name, at least within a certain age-group, after her character in TV show Kumkum became a huge hit. Famous for her on-screen pairing with Hussain Kejriwala, she is married to TV personality Sachin Shroff. It won't come as a surprise if Juhi takes over kitchen duties in the Bigg Boss house.
Nihita Biswas
The most controversial name of season 5, Biswas married gangster Charles Sobhraj in October 9, 2009. The wedding took place inside a jail in Nepal, though the following day, jail authorities said that the family had only been allowed to conduct a tika ceremony.
Gulabi Sapera
Also known as Gulabo, Sapera is a well-known singer-dancer from Rajasthan, famous for her music and various international tie-ups, most significantly with Titi Robin.
Sonika Kaliraman
Daughter of legendary wrestler Chandgi Ram, Sonika is no rabbit in the ring herself. She has featured in another reality show ' Khatron Ke Khiladi, with Akshay Kumar.
Mandeep Bevli
Mandeep Belvi is a model-actress and a Page 3 celebrity but is best-known as an anchor for a news channel, famous of reviewing films in her trademark, flourishing style.
Laxmi
Laxmi is a dancer, dance instructor, and perhaps the most well-known transgender activist in the country. Mumbai was up in arms against Bombay Gymkhana last year when her eviction from the premises was seen as a mark of gross discrimination.
Vida Samadzai
The first Afghan woman to participate in an international beauty pageant, her appearance in a red bikini in the 2003 Miss Earth contest created a huge controversy in her country. In India, she was in the news last year for being deported for violating her work permit.
Shradha Sharma
The actress started dating the controversial ex-Big Boss contestant Raja Chaudhary after her break up with Rakhi Sawant's ex-boyfriend Abhishek Awasthi. But last year, Raja was arrested for allegedly beating Shradha at his Oshiwara residence. She says she's now single.
