23.Lonesome

"Dream of me" his words echoed as she settled down to sleep the first day without Maan. She wondered if she would have better sleep this night than the last. After his wish and the kiss, she was not able to sleep as she wondered about the significance of his gesture and his words. Why had he asked her to dream of him? Had he some how found out that she dreamt of him often..was that what he meant when he said about dreaming of him? This was the second time that he had kissed her, well not actually a kiss but the impact was just the same for her. She could feel her cheeks turning hot with the memory. May be he was teasing her... What was it that he wanted to talk about once he came back? All these, which were still a puzzle, had kept her awake the night before and then how could she sleep properly when she knew he was travelling? Her night was spent restless, with haunting questions and prayers for his safety. In the silence of the night she had heard the car driving away, taking him away from her and she had shed silent tears.

After the restless night, she hadn't felt like going to the office. Then decided work might keep her busy and away from thoughts about Maan. But the office had felt empty without Maan, without his magnetic presence, without his voice that made her feel alive. She had some how managed to get thru the day. Back home, she had kept her ears tuned for his phone. Daadi had seemed amused by her attempts to find out if Maan had called without being obvious about it. She was relieved to hear that he was safe, when the call did come before their dinner. So after dinner she had excused herself and decided to have an early night. At least one day had passed and it would take one day less for him to return. Thanking Babaji, she hoped this night sleep would come fast.

Why did everybody have to be so happy and lively when she was feeling so low? Another restless night was making her tired. How could Pinky be so loud about her relief that Maan sir was not there. But then everybody in the office seemed to be relaxed. Okay, so he was a bit difficult these last weeks but one shouldn't be so happy without the boss!! She hated KC. Everything about it reminded her of Maan and he was not there. She went home early planning to keep Daadi company. At least there was someone who would miss Maan. But Daadi had gone to visit a friend and even Rudr was not there to distract. So she wandered about KM like a lost soul with only her baby to talk to. The doctor had advised her to check for the baby's movements, which she was informed she should start to feel any time. Until now she hadn't felt any. She wondered how it would be to finally feel his movement inside her.

"How are you, my Shonu? Why are you not letting mamma know you are in there? Are you feeling tired because mamma is sad? Just a few days more...when your pappa comes back mamma will be all right. And my Shonu will be happy too, na because Shonu will have the best pappa in the world back with him!"

She paused when she saw that her legs had taken her towards Maan's room. Even though she had been staying in KM for months, she had rarely been inside Maan's room. Now feeling like an intruder she pushed the half closed door open to go inside. The room was in a mess, with the bed unmade, Maan's clothes that he had changed from left on the bed, the cupboards left open and the files scattered on the table and the bed. Nakul was probably waiting for the day he was coming back to tidy up the room she thought as she moved around trying to imagine him at the various spots of his room and automatically tidying up and rearranging things. She folded the blanket and made the bed. As she took his shirt the scent of him assailed her sense. Hugging it to her she closed her eyes and took a deep breath trying to feel his presence at least for a moment. Shaking her head at her stupidity, she folded the shirt and put it away for laundry.

She stacked up the files in a corner of his table to see him watching her with twinkling eyes. Taking his photo in her hands she whispered, "I miss you Maan." She couldn't resist tracing his forehead, then his expressive eyes, his jaw line and his lips. She remembered his kiss.

"Why did you do that Maan? Why did you tease me so? You don't know how much I love you!" she closed her eyes as she whispered, " I know I shouldn't ...I know you are Sameera's...but when you tease me, when you show with your kind gestures that you care, I can't pull myself back." Her breath caught in a sob, "it's been so long since I had someone to lean on...so long since some one's been this kind to me...I couldn't resist falling in love with you... I'm sorry, Maan. But you will never know of this...I'll never stand in the way of your happiness. I'd rather die than create problems for you."

Tears splashed on Maan's face and she wiped it away with her dupatta before holding it close to her heart. " I miss you Maan, so so much! Nothing feels the same without you ... I wish I could at least hear your voice..."

She put the photo back on the table to sit on the chair. Stretching her right arm on the table, she folded her left arm on it and then laid her head on her arms to feast her eyes on his image. The old song that filled her mind found expression thru' her voice.

it was the soulful song that drew Daadi towards Maan's room. From the doorway she found Geet singing to the photo. The melancholy in Geet's voice touched her heart. It was so evident Geet loved her grandson...if she had any doubts about it then this was the proof... Sometimes these young blood was so blind, she thought as she remembered her conversation with Maan two nights back, the day he left...

"Daadi what do you think about keeping Geet with us permanently?"

Daadi smiled inwardly at the way he put it, as if his feelings were not involved.

"How beta?"

"I was thinking about the situation we are in. the baby is a khurana, and she will grow up as my daughter. But how can we ask Geet to give up her child? I don't know why Dev and Nt chose someone like Geet as the surrogate mother and what they had planned for Geet. But will you be able to ask her to leave her child with us and go? Especially now when she doesn't have anybody?"

Daadi didn't interrupt, wanting Maan to present the matter the way he wished to. Then she would find out exactly what was in his mind.

"So, I was thinking that the best solution for this problem is that I marry Geet. What do you think Daadi?"

"Oh! I'll be most happy if you marry Geet and make her my bahu. But beta, what about you? I don't want you to sacrifice your life." She fought back to keep the imp out of her voice and placed a hand on his cheek. Maan caught her hand in his as he said,

"No Daadi I don't think of marriage to Geet as a sacrifice. I like Geet...I care about her. I want o protect her."

"Like...care...protect! All those are good if you are talking about a friend. But for choosing a life partner is that enough? A few years after marriage you may start to feel that you gave up your life for this baby. I want you to have every happiness you deserve."

"No, it won't be like that Daadi...I've never felt this way...may be I didn't express myself correctly...but that is how I feel now all jumbled up...the intensity of the protectiveness I feel for Geet staggers me at times...her happiness and well being has become important to me. Yet I don't know how she feels about me. Then there is the obligation to the Kashyaps. I guess Sameera will understand, but I don't want to spoil the friendship between the families. I did express my acceptance of Sameera a few months back. But I don't think I will be able to stand by and watch Geet suffering because of her decision to have this baby. When I am around her I cant think clearly..."

He clammed up as if he had said more than he had intended. Daadi stood up to lay a hand on his head.

"I'm proud of you beta. I am happy that you are concerned about everybody involved. I'm sure your heart will help you take the right decision. I'll accept and support your decision what ever it is." She leaned down to kiss his forehead.

The pathos in Geet's voice lingered with Daadi as she retracted her steps not wanting to embarrass Geet. It was amusing how foolish the cupid's arrow made people. Her old eyes could see the love that sparkled out of her most beloved people, but they were yet to acknowledge it. Sometimes people were so involved in fighting their own emotions that they didn't see what was right under their nose! She just hoped that these two would sort out their emotions fast, before the baby was born. She wanted her great-grandson to have real parents from the moment he was born, so that they would support each other the way real couple did.

i've updated a day before than i expected...see what a good friend i am.😃...hope u r happy with the result after the teaser...tell me, r u missing Maan like Geet? he may be away for another part too...PMs will be send only by night
