"Rudr, is everything okay with you and Maan?"
"Why do you ask, chotu?"
"Its just that I've seen him glaring at you sometimes and today he got angry again when I said you were coming for me."
"I wonder why?" Rudr gave his best wide eyed innocent look as he lifted his coffee cup to sip from it, effectively hiding his smile.
May be Rudr didn't know about Sameera and Maan, Geet thought and wondered if she should tell him. Then decided it was best as she didn't want any of the person involved to feel hurt.
"Rudr, do you know Maan sir is going to marry Sam?"
Rudr looked at Geet, who had her eyes downcast, her spoon suddenly chasing some elusive nut around her melting ice cream. Did she think he couldn't hear the tinge of longing in her voice when she talked about Maan? Or the unique sparkle in her eyes when she watched Maan while his attention was turned elsewhere? Did she think she could hide that she was in love with Maan? May be she did and what was surprising was that Maan didn't seem to notice! He had thought Maan was attracted to Geet and his attempts to make Maan jealous were turning out fruitful. But now, what was this new complication!
The silence from Rudr made Geet look at him and found him watching her intently. She wondered what was going on in his mind.
"Why are you telling me this, Geet?"
"I don't like seeing Maan sir disturbed. He is already under lot of pressure with the London project. Everybody in the office is so tense."
"So he is Maan sir again!"
"Uh?"
" Do you know chotu, you sometimes call him Maan?"
"Yeah, so? He told me to call him Maan outside office."
"Then why don't you? You call him Maan only occasionally."
"I don't know ...may be it's a become a habit to call him Maan sir."
Or may be you are intentionally trying to distance yourself, chotu and trying to teach your heart to behave, Rudr thought. But sometimes your love and concern for him slips out. He spoke aloud, "I still don't understand why you are telling me about Maan and Sameera."
" You know Rudr, I think Maan sir is irritated ever since you've started working with Sam. I know you don't mean trouble but may be Maan sir doesn't like it when somebody flirts with his girl, however harmless it may be. And as I said he is already stressed out with work issues. So will u try to restrain your charm when you are around Sam?"
"Geet, do you know how will Maan feel when he learns that some one is discussing him behind his back? It would be demoralizing to know some one he cares about doesn't trust him to handle his affairs?"
"Oh!" Geet's eyes became round with concern.
"I know you mean well but it is a guy thing, chotu. I don't think Maan will appreciate you fighting his battles for him. Do you think he can't take a bit of healthy competition?" He saw Geet biting her lower lip in regret and decided he had hit the message home.
"Rest assured I'll, with great difficulty try to restrict my natural exuberance around Sameera, if you think it will keep your Maan sir happy."
But you are wrong, chotu, he added in his mind, it is my friendship with you that is irritating Maan. May be I need further proof! He fought hard to keep the devil away from his smile.
Maan tried to bring his mind under control with Tai chi because hee hated this person he was turning into, displeased with everything and everyone, so quick to flare up. His staff scuttled away whenever they saw him coming. His impatience reflected in his every move and manner that last night Daadi had finally confronted him about it.
"Maan , beta the strain if your bad temper is getting to all of us. Why don't you do something about it?" he had tried to evade, to brush it off.
"I think I know what is causing it. I want you to calm yourself enough to think about the reason for your displeasure and do something about it. You are not going to gain anything by this unnecessary temper!" with that she had walked away not even giving him the satisfaction of showing his irritation for her meddling in his affairs.
But Daadi was correct, he thought as he went thru' the moves. It was high time he dealt with what was troubling him, time to confront the reason for his discontent. Nothing else would do than a straight approach. Had he not tried to immerse himself in work trying to avoid the issue? He had tried to let her know his irritation, tried avoiding her but Geet seemed blissfully ignorant to the cause of his foul mood. If anything his temper was pushing her closer towards Rudr. May be to her whatever they did were ordinary, something friends shared, and most of the time Daadi was with them, yet why couldn't he take it as such? Why couldn't he accept their friendship, why did he feel bad about their growing closeness? Yes they had grown close, that too within a short span of time...that was another thing that irked him...how did Rudr gain her trust so easily, when he could still remember those early days when she wouldn't even look at him, always so tense and wary. But with Rudr it was instant rapport...
Their playfulness the night before came into his mind. Rudr was teasing Geet,
" Maan take it from me, you should never watch a horror movie with Geet. Oh, my poor arm! It's permanently damaged!"
Geet casted a mortified look in his direction, and said, " don't exaggerate!"
"See! You call this exaggeration?" Rudr showed his arm, which had several little moon marks of nails on it. " She holds you so tightly, your arm goes dead by the time the movie is over!"
Maan seethed, with the image Rudr's words brought into his mind. Rudr and Geet sitting in the sofa...cuddled together with Geet clinging to his arm
"Daadi, it was Rudr who chose the horror movie..." She then turned on Rudr, "Didn't I tell you I don't want to watch. But you were the one who insisted."
"I'll have to take a tetanus shot tomorrow!" Rudr teased in reply.
"I'm not talking to you." Geet proceeded to ignore Rudr, which gave a little bit of satisfaction to Maan.
When Geet started to retire for the night, she was still sulking, not giving in to Rudr's attempt to make peace.
" Are you sure you will be able to sleep, Geet? If you want I'll keep you company. Come on stop being angry, this time we will watch your Hrithik Roshan!"
The memory of their night together as they watched "Chalte Chalte' made Maan look towards Geet and found the remembrance reflected in her eyes and the delicate blush on her cheeks. But she pulled her eyes away.
"Daadi, can I sleep in your room tonight?" when Daadi agreed, Geet walked away after casting a triumphant look at Rudr.
A while later Geet's scream made Maan running towards her only to find her chasing Rudr, who had tried to scare her. He had blasted them for their immature behavior, making Geet tearful. It made his blood boil that Rudr had stood in front of Geet, as if she needed to be hid from him. He was still reeling from that thought when Daadi had come to his room to give him the lecture.
So, it taunted him that Geet was never this free or happy around him as she seemed to be with Rudr. Yes, I am jealous...there I've admitted it! He told himself as he threw away the towel. He hated it that Geet, his Geet would feel so comfortable with another male. He despised himself for feeling so because he knew he was being selfish. This was what was best for Geet, her was coming out of her shell. Isn't this what he should wish for Geet? That she should be able to lead a normal life? Yes he wanted her to have a normal life, if he was selfish to wish that he wanted that life to be with him, then so be it! He wanted to be the one to show her that life could be beautiful. He was attracted to her and wanted her to feel the same about him. The idea of marriage with Geet was something he had started to think about, may be not in definite terms...but it was there. He wanted to give her time to adjust to the new changes in her life. But, may be he needs to ponder about it seriously, now that he may no longer be the only person she could have a life with...
Sound from the garden below caught his attention, he looked out thru' the window. Geet was in the garden, combing her fingers thru' her wet stresses. Innocence radiated from her, so child like in her beauty...so fresh so pure...he felt his breath catch. The rays of the early morning sun caressed her, enhancing the natural glow of her face. She had become more beautiful with the life she carried in her...as if their thoughts meshed, she touched the baby who was still a part of her. He could see her lips moving...probably talking to the kid, he thought with an indulgent smile. She had put on a bit of weight, he noticed drinking in her appearance unobserved. If one looked for it you could notice the gentle swell of her stomach. She moved around now, touching a bud gently, smelling a flower there, at peace with the nature.

my thanks to the portrait maker...
Something distracted her to look beyond and a smile of welcome formed on her beautiful lips. Maan turned his head slightly and sure enough there he was, Rudr, his tormentor, the bane of his life.
"Ready Geet? I want you to act natural. Don't be conscious of the camera!"
"Tell me how to do that when you are pointing it at me?" Geet argued.
"Think of it as an extension of my hand!"
"Wow! What big hands you have Rudr!" Geet laughed and Rudr clicked a shot.
"You know Geet, you shouldn't wear make up. It messes with perfection!"
Isn't he a silver-tongued devil? Maan was impressed in spite of himself. He walked away reluctantly not wanting to torture himself further with their fun, not wanting to rid himself of the semblance of calmness he had attained with such difficulty. He didn't want to spoil the day for anyone, especially not Geet, when he was taking an early morning flight to overseas the next day. The time away from Geet will give him the opportunity to think things thru...and plot calmly.
