Hurray!!
He had never seen a beau ideal that pronounced less was more until the steel doors drew back to reveal a vision in butter yellow. The mere event of her stepping out of the elevator was hitting him, like it was one of those rare phenomenons of nature that took its time to reveal its mysteries.
She was clad in a pale buttercup yellow cotton sari that bordered its edge with thread work of the same color. No accessories adorned her neck or small wrists, except a half-white leather strap watch. Her hair scooped back into a French plait and a few short tendrils escaped the clutches of the long braid that began at the top of her head. Her layers teased her incessantly and she continued to tuck them away behind her ear, only for them to disoblige her again.
He was unknowingly wishing now; to take her hand, whisk her back into the elevator and to lie down next to her. It occurred to him, that at the moment, he had nothing but devotion for the new life that was radiating on every inch of her skin. Also he was picking on the clarity of his sentiments for her and it surprised him that he had no ounce of carnal motives backing him up behind that desire of his to be in bed with her. And he realized it was just that; an unperturbed moment of bliss like the one that was part of poetries and mythical mornings with mist laden woods that gave no sight of beginnings or ends. It was moments like these he thought made life worth living, to look for many more of such awe inspiring times.
He smiled and held the door for her to get in, while Daadima and Geet took their places in the car. Settling himself in the driver seat ahead, he adjusted the rear view mirror to catch her reflection. Almost half-lost in her innocent features and amidst a heavy downpour, he tentatively managed to get his family onto the Jersey side. He was thankful his brother-in-law wasn't driving with them for he was sure Maan's scrutinizing eyes wouldn't have missed the boyish smile that kept playing up his lips, the entire time he was behind the wheel on their way to Oak street in Edison.

It was times like these that she wanted to pop a cork into his mouth, in the risk of a wandering fly entering his mouth. She resisted the urge to walk over to the counter he was leaning at and smack some good sense into him. His constant staring was getting out of hand then and particularly, she didn't want her ingenious Daadima to catch him in the act. She knew he would perhaps get away with it, but it was the effect his riveting gaze had on her that bothered her more. It made her smile unconsciously, feeling him all over, even if it was just his fixated eyes, languorously resting on her back. Besides it kept her engaged in multitude of self-arguments, trying to convince her, over spilling the truth about him to her family. She was currently tempted beyond bounds to do so, for the incentives were innumerable to begin with. However, she strangely felt at ease with the furtive glances they stole from each other and the thrill was already an addiction she couldn't easily part with. She arrived at the same decision she arrived so many other times, that she would withhold the truth of their relationship for now. It had her let out another smile in secret...one only he could absorb and comprehend.
Daadima, Geet and Meera were busy sieving through the large inventory of jewelry sets that the store-owner propped against red satin trays over the glass counter. Geet took a red kundan set and handed it to her. She nodded in agreement mindless of her opinions.Though it was her first time shopping for jewelry with the women of her family, oddly, she didn't muster one. She searched her mind for a reason to understand why the task was unnerving to her. As more time passed, her entire attention had diverted from him to the unsettling feeling that gnawed her from the inside.
"How about this one?" Meera asked, pointing at a chain of black beads with a diamond pendant, which upon everyone's approval might turn out as Meera's mangalsutra.
Something snapped inside her and her frame erected, unfolding her arms from her sides.
"How will I know, if I have never owned one?" And she drew a sharp breath instantly closing her eyes; her palms shooting up to hold her head in exasperation. Geet and Daadima had a tinge of shock but their eyes conveyed more pity than she wanted.
"I'm sorry...I don't know" She was beginning to look helpless and lost eyeing no one in particular "I need to go" She crossed to the door, without looking back as the complication unraveled itself in her head. She cursed herself for the gradual attachment that she had gained towards everything that symbolized her marriage with him. Perhaps it was all just Geet's fault that she had turned mawkish over trinkets and jewelry which her sister-in-law never failed to ostentatiously add as part of her daily attire. She didn't know when or how it had happened, but she was annoyingly sentimental about the marriage or that mangalsutra that she didn't have. The worst was her fear of his judgment, even if she ever got around to voicing it.
The pelting rain was drenching her to the bone as she immersed herself into her thoughts, obsessively forcing herself to look beyond the situation. The image of her husband breaking into peals of laughter with mock derision, stuck to her mind, as if it had been super glued there. How else can she expect him to react, if she was the one who had dismissed it all as meaningless tradition to begin with some ten years ago? She wondered if everyone grew out of their rebellious phase, to find themselves wanting the exact same things they once were conflicted about or rather had revolted against.
She walked further in silence, holding her palm up as a visor, protecting her eyes from the incisive rain. Somehow her thoughts stilled with the drone of the one question she repeatedly asked herself. Exactly what had happened to her?...
She wandered through the puddle of pedestrians who passed her as she swept past a stream of Indian shops. And just like that, a peevish smile popped up her face knowing she'd had the answer with her all the while.
Of course, Life had happened to her...
