There is something strange about TRPs. No really, supposedly they are representative of the choices made by people when it comes to television viewing. Yet, come to think of it, TRPs never really make sense. You have weird shows like Baba Aiso varr dhundo (sry if there r any fans of the shw readin this), mukti bandhan etc airing unabashedly. On the other hand, good commercial concepts like recently concluded Kitni Mohabbat Hai, Gunaho Ka devta and of course LTL being killed off. While the previous two died an early death thanks to a fake swayamvar, LTL was murdered by the channel creatives.
Shabbir recently mentioned that Dutta is an author backed role. He spoke only half truth. Indeed Dutta was an author backed role. And that is where the concept of half-truth comes in. It was, it no longer is. TRPs as measured by TAM take into account some 8000 tv viewers. Total number of TV sets in the country are around 140 million. On the other hand the online diaspora consists of lakhs of members. But then again, every show has a few hundred forum members whose voices go unheard. Also, it is harped that the online audience is not diverse enough while TAM tells you about a more diversified viewership. But then again, I believe shows like LTL, GKD, KMH are made for audiences in the age group of 16-24 and that audience is active on the net. Then again, unfortunately not every production house hasan Ekta Kapoor who went out of the way to get Smriti back as Tulsi.
There are some tried and tested formulae to generate excitement and hence the TRPs namely, kill the leads, bring them back, memory loss, new lead, plastic surgery, old face new character, marriage, mis carriage and the lot. Somewhere down the lane, the viewer realizes that he/she has actually forgotten what the original plot was. I get this feeling whenever I read the LTL updates. Its been few weeks since I started watching the show(no dnt get me wrng, ive been watchin it frm the strt online) and I find this stark mis-match between current plot and the original track.
Was'nt the story always meant to be about Dutta's angst and Nakusha's suffering. There was an undercurrent of pain and pathos in show. Today, it is but a shell of what was originally. Mishal left, agreed, but the story too died. What in the world was Mr. Saxena thinking? Mister Pranjal Saxena, you define the word clueless. Not every story supports the TRP raising gimmicks. So even the idea of bringing a half-baked character like Diggu was fatal. Mahi Vij too has lost her credibility. You no longer believe in her pain. As far as Baaji is concerned, Iam too hurt and ashamed to talk about him really. He was the quintessential man-friday. Dutta's support system, Baaji redefined the word pal. A la Sholay, Jai-Veeru camaraderie was there. Once again, CVs take a bow, you killed a perfectly beautiful friendship. And all this in the name of TRPs.
