Nothing Can Keep Us Apart
Epilogue
Maan quietly opened the door to their room and slipped inside. He could see Geet standing next to the baby's bassinet and though her back was facing him, he knew what expression she had on her face. It was the same one that he had every time he looked at any of their children. Absolute admiration and love.
Geet must have heard him come in, for she turned around and asked quietly, "How was your video conference?"
"It was fine, once I finally got all the little distractions to stay in bed."
Geet laughed at the scowl on Maan's face, replying with, "What do you expect? The children are curious about your work."
"Hiding under furniture is something I might expect from Amit and Dhiren, but not from Priya."
"Maan, you were the one who insisted on working from home."
"Geet, I wasn't going to go into the office at nine o'clock at night."
"Maan," came the reply from his laughing wife, "you know very well that with the time difference between here and California, you could have scheduled the meeting for the morning."
"But I never would have been able to have the meeting here with the chaotic mornings we have, and I'm certainly not going back to the office yet."
"Maan, for just one little meeting, what was the harm?"
"Geet, you and Tanaya have only been out of the hospital for two weeks. I'm not going to even consider going back to the office until your one month checkup."
"Maan, I'm perfectly fine. You don't need to worry about me."
"Geet, telling me not to worry about you is like telling me not to breath. Anyway, you know that having had a previous postpartum hemorrhage raises your risk to have another one. I won't take any chances when it comes to your life."
"Two previous uneventful pregnancies and deliveries aren't enough to ease your mind?"
"Seeing you smile eases my mind." Maan grabbed Geet's hand and pulled her towards himself. "Having you in my arms eases my mind." Maan moved one arm around Geet's waist and pulled her close, reaching up to lightly touch her face with his other hand. "Seeing you and being with you is what eases my mind and gives me peace. Nothing else."
Hearing the love in Maan's voice as he said those beautiful words made Geet smile. Being in her husband's arms never failed to turn her insides into mush, and this time was no exception. Her eyes closed slowly and her lips parted as she leaned closer in anticipation. Maan was certainly not going to waste an opportunity to be close to his wife. He closed the small space between them by capturing Geet's open mouth with his own. Bodies pressed together and hands explored eagerly until they were interrupted by small baby noises.
Breaking apart slightly, both parents looked at their daughter, trying to determine what the noise meant. Her eyes were closed but they could see her fingers opening and closing. Realizing that she was still asleep, they stood side by side, gazing with love at their little angel.
After a few moments, Maan turned to give Geet's cheek a kiss, and whispered in her ear, "Thank you."
"For what?"
"For allowing me to be the husband of the most beautiful woman on earth, and giving me four of the most beautiful children ever born."
"They are beautiful, and I love them very much. But four is enough. I meant what I said. Do you understand me, Mr. Khurana?"
"Yes, Mrs. Khurana, I understand you. You know, actually, when Tanaya was born, and the doctor placed her in my hands for the first time, I felt like our family was finally complete."
Turning in Maan's arms, so that she was facing him, she replied, "Not quite complete."
"Not quite..." echoed Maan in confusion. "But you just said..."
"I want my devrani. When is Vicky going to stop dragging his feet and ask Meera to marry him? I mean, they've been officially dating for the last five years, and I know they were in love at least three years before that. Frankly, I thought he would propose right after she came back from America."
"You know why he didn't."
"I know, I know. They both wanted to make sure that after the long separation they didn't just jump into a relationship that had no foundation. Well I think that five years is enough of a foundation, don't you? Dhiren already insists on calling Meera, chachi. Why doesn't Vicky make it official?"
Maan smiled at the bossy tone Geet had adopted while she was lecturing on Vicky and Meera's relationship. "Don't ask me. I'm not the one involved."
Seeing Geet give her customary pout, the one that all their children had inherited from her, Maan chuckled and said, "I'll tell you a secret. About a week ago, Vicky came to me and asked me to get his mother's ring out of the family safe."
"You mean he's finally decided to propose? When?"
"I don't know when, but he's got some plan in mind."
"Oh, this is wonderful news. I'll have to talk with Dadima right away. I'm sure she'll want a big wedding. You know, I think she was a little disappointed that our wedding was so small."
"Don't get too excited, Mrs. Khurana, Vicky hasn't asked Meera yet, let alone she answered yes."
"Maan, don't be stupid. Of course she's going to say yes, and Dadima and I need to start planning right away, because I doubt they'll want to wait too long for the actual wedding and there are so many things to take care of."
"If my darling Ms. Hoshiarpur Express can stop speaking for two seconds, I'd rather she concentrate a bit on taking care of her husband."
"Taking care of her husband?" Geet saw the naughty glint in Maan's eye, and felt herself respond automatically. "How shall I take care of my husband."
"Some hugs would be nice."
"Oh, hugs." Geet gave a small smile and put her arms around Maan's waist.
"Kisses would be good too."
Geet leaned in to kiss Maan's cheek as his arms moved around her back. "Is that all?"
"Some cuddling would be nice."
Geet couldn't stop from smiling and blushing as Maan picked her up and carried her over to their bed. They both knew it would be several weeks before Geet was recovered enough for them to become fully intimate again. However, that didn't mean that they couldn't enjoy one another's company. Laying in each other's embrace, Maan and Geet talked about their love, life, family, and the beautiful future that they knew was ahead of them. Life would be wonderful together, for come what may, the would never be apart.
