Part 3: Lock and Key

No one knew what did the trick, but they had settled down peacefully side-by-side and slept through the night without another word, sharing the same blanket that had apparently seemed short to cover the two of them. Now just like any tiny hole above the window, provisioned to let the cable wire into the room, there was one right by this one too, a few feet away from the door. But only this one didn't let any wires inside and instead focused piercing rays of the morning sun light on his forehead. The heat at the spot grew intense to wake him up and as he moved his head trying to shake off the smoldering patch, it landed right on his eye nudging him closer to her. Not knowing the proximity within with they lay next to each other while they snoozed, they adjusted to get comfortable and their arms and legs moved congruently as they nestled close.

MK was a morning person and this time called for a trip to the gym usually to pump weights and even an occasional martial arts practice followed by vegetable juice to wrap up the exertion routine. He was not at the Khurana mansion and given his impending recovery he could not go about this regimen giving MK the window of opportunity to sleep in a little longer.

In a dazed state that he was, he couldn't process this artifact in his hand; he sure didn't own anything this smooth or soft. Slowly fluttering his eyelids, eyebrows shooting up, he raised his hand to catch a glimpse of this object that had provoked his interest amidst his light slumber. The very movement had woken up Geet and she now felt a tug by her palm and turned to face him.

"Mera haath chodenge?" she asked him in a flat tone.

This jolted MK right in his spine, not so much over their snuggle, but more over the fact that she still did not shriek like any other woman would, if she was to find herself sleeping next to a stranger.

Perhaps, she didn't come across normal to MK deep inside and in actuality she did make a living outside the proprieties of the society, which had him disregard the attraction that reeled him in towards her. Another 4 days of this strange pull is what he would have to endure and for now he had accepted it without a fight. To him women of this profession had to have this characteristic to draw men to them with their charm and appeal; it was good for their business. Without a doubt he had concluded that the allure of Geet was no different.

Thanks to the knot Geet had tied with the two ends of the cloth by her ear, it didn't ruin his morning further by having him privy to, a full view of her angelic face. She peered into him, making her wonder if she ever wanted to break contact with his deep hazel eyes. Do I want him to let go of my hand? She thought to herself. She was strangely enjoying this moment as her mind was blinded by her wants from this man.

Geet snapped out of her trance as Maan abruptly removed his clutch on her palm; his face portraying an expression of anger mixed with disgust.

The want in her head was the first for Geet and she had never acted so immature over some man holding her hand, while lying next to him in bed. This needed prodding and she instantly did so, as she rushed to the bathroom, leaving MK behind, who now comfortably stretched his aching muscles upon having the bed to himself.

Facing the mirror, Geet untied her dupatta off her face and let out a sigh.

"Babaji...mere saath aap ye khel kyon khel rahe hain? Main aise kyon kar rahi hoon?" she cried seeking her Babaji's divine intervention to guide her over the path that she was now striding.

"Sirf haath hi tho pakde hue the..." Geet said looking up, more out of habit "please aap bataiye ki main inse kya chahti hoon" she cursed herself now looking at the mirror.

A loud knock interrupted her atypical lamenting session and she was sure that it couldn't be none other than her favorite houseguest, MK. After covering herself with the dupatta once again, which now had become second nature to her, she went on to answer his query.

"Mera shirt chaiye..." MK asked, not facing her, still looking disturbed.

"Voh khoon bhara hua tha...tho maine vusa phek diya" she answered casually.

"Vus mein ek cigarette packet tha....vuse bhi phek diya?" he asked impatiently as anxiety filled him for not knowing if he could have his smoke that day; his one sorry vice. MK rarely smoked and did so only if he was engulfed by rage or over frustration and today it was for, well a blend of both. Vexation over not being able to have a hold on his thoughts that had him go in a merry-go-round all the time she was within spitting distance of him and the ongoing cycle angered him.

"Aapko bus cigarette chaiye na? " Geet asked coolly, letting out a sigh of relief, for she had expected a bigger loss to be incurred by MK. She walked out of the bathroom and went behind the curtain, which led her to a cupboard in the kitchen. Picking up a white cigarette box from the shelf, she walked back to MK and shoved the same in his hand to which MK was taken back with shock. It took MK moments to realize that such commodities for getting a whiff of another world was not uncommon around there and to which he jerked to move close to the window to puff off his displeasure through tobacco smoke.

"Ye lijiye...main tho gabra gayi ye soch ke ki appko vahi shirt chaiye..." Geet said as MK looked around for a lighter.

"Dekhiye aap bait jayiye bisthar pe...Mujhe koi problem nahi ki aap andar smoke kare tho" She added as she noticed the discomfort with which he moved. MK didn't know the incentive he was getting and he had no grasp of coherency around her to grasp that the room did not have the rancid smell either. He moved to the bed as Geet supported his shoulder and yet again as she came near MK lost himself in her eyes.

Struggling to decide if he should go ahead with his smoke, MK sat there with his feet stretched and head carelessly pulled behind as he stared at the white ceiling.

His phone rang to take him away from the void his mind was craving the moment and he picked it up in a jiffy from the wooden table placed right next to the headboard.

"Dev...Mera yahan chupna teek nahi hain yahan pe chandini ke siva 2 aur logon ko mere bare pata hain" Maan screamed instantly at Dev, right after attending the call and before their initial greetings could be exchanged. Stuck with surprise, Dev jumped to respond to the flying question that came from his boss, scratching his head to make sense of the anger in his voice.

"Lekin Bro...abhi bhi confusion hain aapke baare main...log yeh bhi nahin jaante ki aap ko vus accident ke baad kya hua tha" Dev said, hoping to keep MK at the Rooftop.

"Yahi teek hain.." He said to MK as silence prevailed on either side for a minute. This got MK thinking. He didn't know much about trusting her, a loud mouthed, witty at times, draw your eye balls out beautiful, sex worker, but right up to that moment, his plan was still working and that made him ease down a bit.

"Toh police report banvadiya na?" MK asked trying to check up on the other details he wanted to cover on this call.

"Haan Bro jaise aap kahe...engine combustion...Basu ko haath bhi nahi lagayenge" Dev said with a sense of accomplishment for having followed MK's orders to the T.

"Hmmm...Aur Daadima ko bilkul call mat karna...Maine vunhe samja diya hain ki main 2 mahine ke liye london vapas jaa raha hoon" He informed Dev, who was now attentive given that MK was in command mode.

"Yeah Bro"

"Aur Office ka kaam kaise chal raha hain? Voh ranipat site wale paise diye ke nahin?" MK asked wanting to get his business updates for Dev also managed Khurana construction for him. While MK stayed on the phone with Dev, she moved around the room and opened the windows on the side away from the hallway, which gave her a view of the colorful buildings that filled the area she lived in. A compass at the window would point west and this is where Geet spent many a night watching the moon rise, awakening the Chandini in her for the night that was to come. She had not been Chandini since the time MK had come in. One day and two nights had passed and she had taken up the role of his caregiver, having peeled away the Chandini in her mind. Now that she saw the busy life and the business that still existed outside her room, the moment gave her back a poignant reminder of her reality.

While attempting to seize a hold on her life, a loud knock interruped Geet from her thoughts and had her rush to the entryway. Before she could answer the door, she looked at MK and nodded for him to acknowledge his readiness to face the next part in time that was arrive.

"Kaun Hain" She yelled out restlessly.

"Main...Manisha" called out a foppish voice which brought a rosy tinge back to her pale cheeks. Opening the bolts she squeaked at Manisha in an angry tone.

"Manisha...Aagayi...Main tumhe kal bulayi thi aur tum aaj aa rahi ho?"

Dressed in a copper blue skirt, a white short top and a blue dupatta, thrown over the shoulders, a dark enuch walked into the room mulling over the annoyance in Geet's tone. Though Manisha primarily stayed with Shasha all through the day, she was Geet's confidante at the debauchery. Mocked by Geet as BBC, Manisha was her source for all the up comings at rooftop. Apart from the girl talk that they did share with one another and the news that came her way from Manisha, she was more needed for the daily trips to the market that only Manisha was allowed.

"Main kya karoon Chandini..." she sighed and the very instant upon entering the room, her eyes fell on this charming stranger who was lying down shirtless upon the bed. "Hai Hai...yeh chikna kaun hain..." Manisha asked with uncontrollable excitement as she dismissed Geet's question and walked to sit by MK. He was a feast to her eyes as she gaped at his desirable well-built muscles, noticing which MK instantly pulled the sheets to cover himself.

"Mujhe haat mat lagana..." MK spoke with disgust, turning away to brush off her hand that had come to rest on his arm.

"Arey aisa mat kahiye...Chandini ki tarah resham sa na sahi..lekin yeh bhi mulayam haath hain" she said trying to coax him to have another go and get a feel of his taut structure. Unable to see MK in discomfort, Geet moved towards Manisha and yanked her by her shoulder to put some distance between the two. This had MK ponder on the crossness he had felt with Manisha and not with Geet given he had spent the most time with her in the same room.

"Manisha...dekho...Inke baare main kisiko pata nahin chal na chaiye..." Geet requested as she had Manisha face her and eyed him at the same time. For a moment their eyes met and it had her speak words that came from a deep place, which she had not known existed in her.

"Kao meri jaan ki kasam..." she said struggling to break the gaze and handling the embarrassment in her mind over the words she had uttered that hazy second.

"Chandini aisi badi baat kyon kahe rahi hain.., tumhe kya chaiye bol..." Manisha called out to her as she strived to make sense of the importance the stranger had in her life. Geet made her way to the kitchen eyes closed as she rebelled against the layers that were being stripped off of her. Coming back from the kitchen where she had the prescription that the doctor had given her, she gestured Manisha to move towards the door and gave her the needed instructions.

"Chalo yeh sab dawahi leke aana khaas karke bandages bahuth saare..." she asked of her. As his enquiry from the morning swung back into her mind she added yet another item to the list "aur ek shirt bhi kareed le aana" which took his attention back to the duo that was having a hushed conversation by the entrance.

"Chaliye paisa dijiye." she commanded as she was back by the bed and had her palm straightened out flat in front of his face.

"Paisa...mere paas sirf card hain" MK said as he took his wallet by the same table and showed her an almost empty purse, that carried a few hundreds and papers which would not do for her asks that day.

Not wanting to waste time, she rolled her eyes and gave Manisha the needed currency from the top shelf of the cupboard that had remain inconspicuous to MK during his stay in the place.

"Chalo Manisha yeh paise leke jaavo...agar aur zyaada chaiye tho mujse pooch le na" she handed the money and locked the door once again to breathed out in relief, checking off a box in her mental task list.

Both took turns to finish their morning routine after Manisha left and not knowing how to move with time, they stayed in far ends of the room. Geet tidied up an already clean kitchen and had water boiling on the stove while MK sat on the bed. The cupboard on the wall that faced the sleeping area was wide open and drew his focus to the four shelves of books, neatly arranged vertically with the exception of the lower shelf that was filled with CD's.

"Yeh sab kya hain" MK asked as he got up and walked closer to inspect the same. This got Geet on her toes as she dashed across the room to shut the cupboard doors and once she did, Geet quickly turned to face him.

They had not expected the sudden closeness as his face gazed her inches away from his. Lowering her lashes to shield herself from a moment of weakness coming her way, she placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Aapko aaram karna chaiye..." Geet spoke in a soft tone unacquainted with the skills to break off such deep pulls that they were experiencing. His hand moved without the call of his mind and rested on hers that was now soothing him in unknown ways. Impossible it was for the naked eye to gather the slight caress that she felt on the top of her hand, but it was the deepest a man had ever touched her with his eyes still yielding to speak to her soul.

Reality beckoned Geet as she broke contact and walked back to the kitchen, leaving MK by the cupboard to regret his very move. Books of all kinds took his interest as he examined the organized shelves and carried some back for further reading to distract him from the mortifying attraction he was falling for.

She picked up a hot water vessel and came to sit by him with a clean square white towel. He had cribbed earlier about not having had a shower in the last two days and to this she had promised him a towel bath. With awkwardness crawling the air, she dipped the towel into the vessel to wet the same and squeezed out the excess water before she took it to gently wipe down his arm. The warm towel gave him the much-needed sense of ease and had him rest back his head as he closed his eyes. Taking care to pass the wounds that had crusted dry blood on top, she decided to break into a conversation with him.

"Maine apna paisa dediya iska matlab ye nahi ki yahan pe sab vudhar mein milega" she said moving on to his neck.

"Kya chaiye mere paas card ke sive kuch nahin hain dene ke liye" MK responded instantly catching up to her.

"Koi baat nahin...main ye phone rak le thi hoon" Geet declared as she laid eyes on his phone that was by the bedside table and it put a perplexed look on his face.

"Phone? tumhare liye Dev se kehke naya phone kareed ke dene ke liye kehadoonga" he said, not wanting to part with his phone, that ran his life.

"Vahi...tab tak main is phone ko rak lethi hoon. Hisab main rakna mere bas ki baat nahin hain" Geet now had a wry smile on her face and continued toweling him down his other arm.

"Itna bhi barosa nahin hain mujpe..." He got up to look at her with a scrunched forehead.

"Main aapke baare main kuch nahin jaanti hoon...Main aap par kyon barosa karoon?" she asked with a smirk; Her mind now schemed to hack into him, something they had not tried at each other since his stay at Rooftop.

"Mujhe kaise pata ki aap sach bol rahe hain?"

He now moved forward for her to give him a rub down his back. This seemed more comfortable for they did not have to face each other, yet it posed a challenge to Geet as she made patterns with the towel by his lats.

"Mujpe itna bhi barosa nahin hain tho mere liye aapni jaan ki kasam kyon kayi thi?" he asked, prodding her the same style she had picked up.

Caught unguarded, she paused a quick moment before she could get back at him "Voh sab mujhe pata nahin...Bus mujhe laga agar main aisi kuch baat keha deti tho Manisha ko lagega ki aap mere liye kuch lagte hain?"

A sly smile popped up his face upon hearing her response. "Tho main tumhare liye kuch lagta hoon?" MK asked.

The question jolted Geet at her spot "Nahin...bus kehadiya..." she stuttered as she went along to explain "Yeh baat sach ho ya jhoot manisha ko koi pharak nahi padega..."

"Voh bus mere baare main sochegi kisiko aapke baare main bol ne se pehle..." Geet said as she came back to finish up and sat close to him. Now that the toughest part of the job came up to wipe his face, she slightly shivered as their eyes met.

"Toh tumhare liye sach ya jhoot ke beech pharak nahin hain?" He asked her straight as her hand passed his forehead.

"Haan bhi aur naa bhi...Aap kyon samaj na chahte hain?" Geet made every effort to not break down as she felt his warm skin.

"Maine tho kaha nahin ki main samaj na chahta hoon...tumhe laga kya?" MK asked with an evil smirk.

"Isme kya pharak hain...Jab tak main nahin kehati ki mera sach jhoot hain...tab tak woh sach hi hain na aap ke liye" She slightly turned to sit facing the wall, as she made up reasons to support the statement she had made earlier.

"Jaise...sab jaante hain MK hi aapka sach hain...Aur yeh tab tak sach hi rahega...jab tak aap yeh nahi kehte ki Maan...." Geet now faced him squarely with a simper.

"Geet?" MK thundered as he realized where the conversation was inching.

"Maine kuch galat keha diya? Yeh sach hai ki jhoot?" Not caring for his anger, she sponged down his raspy jaw, which calmed him down wanting to give in to her word play.

"Tum kya sun na chahti ho..." he asked wanting to open up to her which perhaps was the first time he had let a women come close to Maan. No facades, apparently was the theme of the afternoon.

"Jo aap mujhe kehna chahte hain" she challenged him back. MK had his eyes closed and had swung back his head preparing for the barriers that were to be broken in their impromptu quizzing session. Geet volunteered not noticing a come back from him.

"Teek hain...aap kya sunna chahte hain? Mera har sawal ke badle aap mujhe ek sawal kar sakte hain..." she laid down the rules of the game they were to play and this called back MK to look at her with a canny smile. To him she had fallen into her own trap and he wasted no time to pounce at her.

"Tumhara naam kya hain?" he jumped at her with his first question

"Chandini" Geet spoke, still seated next to him suspecting his foul idea behind the question.

"Yeh sach hain ki jhoot?" he shot back increasing the pace at which the questions came around. Now that Geet got the complete picture, she quickly picked up the vessel and moved out, when MK tugged her by her wrist, pulling her closer. A real charmer that he was, MK beside his wounded self, moved towards her and held her gaze. Not wanting to fall behind, Geet toyed with him.

"Aaapka naam kya hain?" she snorted, shedding away her momentary shyness that had built in when he had held her hand.

"MK..." He said with a smug smirk, expressing himself with the same physical gesture as he pompously stuck out his chest.

"Yeh sach hain ki jhoot?" Geet asked.

She moved to grab the vessel again to end the question"Maan..."

Upon hearing his name, his clutch by her wrist tightened pulling her closer to spill the water on the floor and she was now completely on him as he bit into his words to ask her "Kya kaha tumne?" Holding her by both her upper arms, Maan went closer to shake her up for the answer to which she simply brushed aside his left hand. This action only angered Maan to twist her arm and tie it behind her back. New that the feelings in her was, she struggled to break off his hold, but her mental screams deafened her asking her not to. Holding still, she closed her eyes, took a deep breath and gave out a smile to move the pointer off the direction their tiff was heading.

"Aap bhi na...kitne ziddi hain?" she said and at that his hold loosened for her to continue "Mujhe tho Chandini nahi bulayenge...aur agar main aapko Maan kahoon tho gussa naak pe chad raha hain?" She got up to walk away to the kitchen. Grabbing a mop cloth, she came back and bent down to soak the water on the floor.

Trying to pick up the conversation where she had left off "Tho main kya keha rahi thi...Haan Maan...aapka naam MK hain?...yeh sach hain ki jhoot?" She asked once again with a giggle.

Little did she know she was pursuing Maan, untying his bonds; a thorny barbed wire that had him grounded, not to seek solace or dependence in the opposite sex. To him women were merely shallow and it was changing now. His silence spoke to her and she left behind the mundane cleaning job to go back to sit close to him.

"Aap kyon nahin maan le the...ki hum dono jhooti zindagi jite hain...aur voh hamre nas main aisa mil gaya hain...ab voh hi hamara sach ho hain...." she announced in a glum tone, looking down with shame. Fear drove her, for she had challenged him to accept the ugly truth of his life. Would this moment end the rolling ball game they had started a little while ago and as she sat there counting time, wondering what his next words would be, his forehead furrowed openly declaring that he struggled to make a decision.

"Tum bhi tho parde ke peeche chupi ho...aur mujhe baashan de rahi ho?" Maan asked coming out of his bitterness she had caused him and dared her back.

"Kya aap chahte hain ki mera parda hate?" she smiled coyly turning away slowly not to call attention. Having crossed the fragile moment, he questioned the probability of working out a realistic liaison between them.

"Geet...ye sab baatein karke kya faida...sirf 4 din hi tho main rehne wala hoon" He asked shrugging his shoulders conveying the lacking seriousness of the proposal.

"Aur aapke sawal main hi jawaab bhi hain..." she splotched her response not waiting to think and this had both of them turn away to the far corners of the room.

"Agar sirf 4 din hi tho rehne wale hain...tho kya isme ye nakaab pehne bina nahin reh sakte?" Geet continued to put forth her argument.

"Mujse ye sab nahin hoga Geet...main normal logon ki tarah nahin hoon" It was still not good enough for him, yet he couldn't deny the pull he felt from her, beating himself that moment for getting into the exchange to start with.

"Jaanti hoon...isiliye aap se pooch rahi hoon" Geet said trying to read him as Maan noticed her playing a shrink. It was too late and he had given it already as his lips curved to form a smile to which she croaked with delight.

"Aur main yeh bhi jaanti hoon ki aap Geet se milna chahte hain? Yeh sach hain ki jhoot?" Recognizing her boldness, Geet ran away to hear him shout "Jhoot".

She peeped out of the curtain and mocked him noticing his playful tone "Dekha...main jaan thi thi..."

There was no looking back as Maan thought of all that was going to be shot at him. It was a simple game of quiz, an attempt to live truthfully within the confines of the four walls for the next couple of days. Having lived years of a masked life, it was going to take time for him to switch to Maan, for MK had been his default persona, which the hideous society asked for.

"Mujse seeda seeda bolna nahi aata hain Geet..." He said, trying to set the framework of their dialogues. "Aur aapko mera jawab kab seeda laga Maan?" Geet spurted as she proclaimed her readiness for the wager.

They spoke rarely for the rest of the day as they came together to have their food, or when she medicated his wounds. Geet schemed with Maan anticipating the help to bring in the second mattress, with both of them secretly wishing for it to be delayed. As the day came to a close and when all that was left was to slip into bed a strange stillness covered the room.

"Aap itna chup kyon hain?" Geet asked as the unbearable tranquility pierced her. Turning to face Maan, as he lay on his back staring at the ceiling, she grilled him further "Main aapse hi pooch rahi hoon...Aap bore ho rahe hain?"

"Main baath karne ke mood main nahin hoon Geet..." he said as the drugs were an taking effect on him. Now that Manisha had gotten his painkillers in the evening, he was on his prescription schedule, which had him, muzzy.

"Tum chaho tho baath karo main sun raha hoon" Maan said not wanting to put her off. When had I started considering her state of emotions? He thought to himself and let out a smirk. The fact that she lived and worked in a brothel and that Maan had the blood of many kills on the street, had disappeared and the lure between the two gave birth to a pair that resulted in confronting the verity of their lives.

As Geet gave out small details of her daily life in the wretched place, he would respond with a constant hum of "Hmmm" to let her know of his presence in the exchange. An annoying habit of Geet kicked in as they talked for a longer stretch of time. "Aap bore tho nahi ho rahe ho na?" she would add often and this had him irked slowly.

Noticing his tone that now piqued "Dekhiye abhi gussa kar rahe hain?" she said, trying to steal a look at him as she lifted her head off the pillow.

"Aur nahin tho kya...baar baar main bore hua ke nahin kyon pooch rahi hain?" Maan rolled his eyes as he gave out his response.

"Kyunki...koi mujse paise deke meri baatein..." She had stated the one sadness of her life in that pressing moment as they argued. She had caught up with her slip and it shut her up, making her fall back into bed without another word.

"Tumhari Kya...Oh!..." Making sense of the spill, he instantly turned to see if she had shattered from the delicate truth.

"Mujhe neend aa rahi hain Maan...Good night" Geet said abruptly throwing away their conversation that resulted in that difficult moment. She had accepted her self deeply but it was the new beginnings that she felt insecure about.

The drug effects had completely worn off as he tried to figure out if she had been affected, while on the other side he was still stripping his layers to show his unnamable affections for her. 17 mts had passed when he raised his baritone to put an end to the fight within him.

"Geet....tum so gayi..." Maan asked slowly.

"Nahin..." she replied in a sleepy tone, which sang to him. His slender fingers moved up from behind her face trying to untie her dupatta knot, when at the same time she turned and her dupatta-covered cheeks hit the tips of his fingers. They didn't react to his action and were unaware as to what did not call for a baffle at his bold endeavor.

"Main bilkul bore hogaya hoon..." he said as he peered into her with a straight face.

"Yeh sach hain ki jhoot" she retorted and broke into a snigger.

"Bolo tum kya chati ho...mera jawab sach ho ya jhoot?" he asked her trying to vie with her."

"Sach..." was her response as he noticed the line that the tight piece of cloth was leaving behind on her fair skin just below her eyes. Questioning himself many times, he traced the depression that the dupatta had formed on her derma and had her slide down the path of need for him.

"Tumhara jawab sach hain ki jhoot?" Maan asked her, wanting to hear more of her; a pacing heart that shrieked at the desire that brewed in him.

Another day had passed; bringing them closer for no reason they could comprehend. A random game of chance played in that room and for now they cared that they had become each other's key for the locks of their life that spun lies around them.

Thank you for the patience all. I believe its been more than 2 weeks since I updated and so tried finishing it today. I'm still ill and so couldn't take care to do more edits. Overlook the spelling errors and grammar. Happy New Year to all.
