Part 83 - No Problems?
It was eight weeks after Priya's birth and Maan and Geet were back at the hospital for Geet to have a routine checkup. The doctor wanted to determine not only how Geet was recovering physically post labor, but how she was handling the emotional and physical demands of caring for a newborn. She did a thorough examination and then spent about twenty minutes just conversing with Geet, asking and answering questions. Maan found it very difficult to wait by himself and was just about to go in unannounced, when the doctor called him back to join Geet.
"Doctor, is everything alright? No problems?" Maan was so anxious that these questions came out before he had walked a few steps into the room.
Giving a small smile, the doctor merely directed Maan to take the seat next to his wife. She then proceeded to say how happy she was that Geet was getting the necessary support at home and help in taking care of their daughter. She said that many men didn't realize how difficult things can become for a new mother after the birth of the child. Maan was glad to know that his actions had been correct, but that was not the thing that he was waiting to hear.
When he could stand the wait no longer, Maan finally blurted out, "But Geet's health, how is it? Is she doing well physically?"
"Oh, yes. Mrs. Khurana is healing nicely. In fact, I already explained to Mrs. Khurana that she's healthy enough to resume all normal marital activities." Geet blushed, while Maan blinked, almost as if he didn't quite understand what the doctor was saying.
Before Maan could really comprehend what the doctor had said, she continued."Taking onto account the difficulties Mrs. Khurana faced during this pregnancy, especially during the labor, I would recommend waiting a few years before you consider having another child. That will give Mrs. Khurana's body a decent amount of time to fully recover. Other than that, everything seems to be going very well. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me or my office anytime. Your next appointment is in a month, so I'll see you then, Mrs. Khurana."
"Thank you so much, Doctor," said Geet as she got up from her chair. Upon noticing that Maan was still sitting, with a blank look on his face, she called his name and said, "The doctor is finished with me. It's time to go now."
Startled out of his thoughts, Maan stood up quickly and thanked the doctor. He then indicated to Geet that she should go ahead and he followed her out. Maan watched as Geet quickly reached into her bag and pulled out her phone, quickly dialing a number and putting the phone to her ear.
"Hello, Dadima? How is everything? Is Priya doing all right?"
"....."
"Ji, Dadima. The doctor said everything is fine and we're coming home now."
"....."
"Really! Well, tell Priya that Mama and Papa love her and will see her soon. Bye, Dadima."
Maan smiled at Geet, and said teasingly, "Geet, you do know that Dadima has taken care of a lot of children in her time. I think she can handle Priya for an hour or two, without us having to check up on her."
"For your kind information, Mr. Know-it-all Singh Khurana, Dadima asked me to call her when the appointment was finished. And don't think that you are fooling anyone with your care-free attitude. Dadima told me how you called 15 minutes ago to ask how Priya was doing." Maan colored at being found out by his wife, causing Geet to laugh and grab his hand, saying, "Come on, Papa, let's go home. It's obvious you're missing aapki beti. Anyway, you know I don't like being around doctors if I don't have to."
Maan's embarrassment over being caught checking up on Priya fled at Geet's mention of the doctor. Geet didn't notice how his fingers tightened their hold on her hand, or how his face became paler and creased with worry lines. Walking ahead of him, she had no idea that her husband was feeling disturbed as he recalled all of the doctor's words.
She finally decided that she was angry with her stupid, gadha husband!
