Chapter Twelve
Ahem was glad that at least one part of his life was going well. The dinner meeting Jigar and himself had with Sanjeev had gone remarkably and there was another one all set up for today. It was decided that both Jigar and himself would go to this one as well. He was really proud of his younger brother. He was really living up his responsibilities and they were really bonding. He was also glad that they were finally going to meet the daughter that had made all of this possible. It seemed Sanjeev had some health problems so his daughter was going to take care of the project. His secretary had told him her name was Pari. He was looking forward to meeting her.
"Bhai are you ready to leave for the meeting." Jigar walked in all dressed and ready. He picked up all the files and his brothers laptop and handed it to him. The two brothers walked downstairs and were surprised to see Kokila at the dining table. Ahem smiled at his mother. He was really happy that she was slowly moving around again. Kokila ignored her son's gesture and continued eating. She was doing this for Gopi. Gopi wouldn't want her to stay in bed; she would want her to live. Ahem's smile disappeared and he sat down at the table next to Jigar. They ate their breakfast in silence. Ahem got up and Jigar followed him out the door. He knew his mom didn't want to see him or talk to him so he walked away without a word. He was saddened at the thought that his own mother hated him this much. She had every right to hate him. He hadn't done anything but disappoint her lately. Ahem and Jigar drove to Shah Industries in silence. Jigar was deep in thought about what Rashi was planning while Ahem was deep in thought about Gopi. They arrived at their destination and were greeted by Radha. She led them to the conference room and told them to have a seat while she went and got Gopi. Ahem's head shot up at that name. Did he hear right? No, his mind was playing tricks on him because he had just been thinking about her. She had told him earlier that her name was Pari. He shook his head and looked back down at his file. He looked up and was shocked to see the person in front of him. He hadn't heard the name wrong, she had said Gopi. His Gopi was standing in front of him in this conference room and she looked absolutely beautiful. She looked different. Her hair wasn't pulled back like it always was and it flowed around her face perfectly. It was also a little shorter and more modern with layers. She wore a beautiful white salwaar kameez instead of her usual saris. The next thing he noticed shattered his heart into a million pieces. She wasn't wearing her mangalsutra and her maang wasn't filled. She no longer wore any symbols of a married woman. He deserved it he knew that, but it hurt seeing her like that. Gopi stared at the figures in front of her and she was shocked. She dropped the files in her hand and realized she had to act like a professional. He was no longer her husband and she was no longer his wife. He had made that loud and clear that night, and had reaffirmed it when he had married Anita. Jigar got up and helped his Bhabhi pick up the files. He was so happy seeing her there. Gopi grabbed the files and took a seat. She couldn't believe she had missed the name of the company and representatives in all those files.
"Hello Mr. Ahem Modi and Mr. Jigar Modi. I know that my father Mr. Shah and Mr. Rahul Gupta have been working with you on this project from the beginning, but I am going to be taking over for them. Mr. Shah is unwell and Mr. Rahul is away on business to the US and will be gone for quite a while. I have reviewed all the files and have caught up with the dealings with the builders, contractors, and lawyers. As I'm sure you both know, this is a very important deal for both Shah Industries and for Modi Industries and I want all the plans to go off without a hitch." Ahem was amazed at how eloquently she spoke without a moment of hesitation. She really had changed and gained confidence in herself. He was also amazed she had learned so much so quickly. It was as if she had been doing this all her life. He looked over at Jigar and knew Jigar was thinking the same thing.
"Bhabhi how are you? We have missed you so much around the house. Everyone can't stop thinking about you and how you have been." Gopi was shocked at his sudden outburst and wanted to sit down and hear all the news of the Modi parivaar, but she knew she couldn't do that. They were no longer her family and she had no rights over them. They also had no rights over her. They had lost all their rights the moment Ahem had married someone else.
"I'm sorry Mr. Modi, but my name is Ms. Shah. Ms. Gopi Shah, CEO of Shah Industries. I am nobody's Bhabhi and here you are a client so you will address me as such. I have arranged this meeting to talk business, so can we please get on with it?" Ahem was taken aback by Gopi's statement and so was Jigar. They had never heard Gopi talk so sternly before. Jigar simply nodded and opened up his file. He was hurt, but what else did he expect. Did he really expect Gopi to just forget the insults and humiliation she had received at the hands of the Modi family? "As I was saying this is a very important deal for both of our companies. Now the main reason your proposal was accepted over all the others was because of one major detail, the locations of the hotels. From the details you have outlined in your proposal I assume you have acquired the rights to all these properties. Am I correct?"
"Yes, Ms. Shah we have acquired the titles to all the properties listed on the proposal for the building site of the hotels. We only have one left to acquire. We have the Goa title left to acquire and have run into some problems. We will hopefully obtain that by the end of next week." Jigar responded.
"I'm sorry Mr. Ahem Modi. You are the CEO of Modi Industries and I expected better from you. We finalized this contract based on the fact that these properties were already ours. Next week is not soon enough. The Goa Hotel is the biggest and most important portion of this project. I want that title before the end of this week or you can say goodbye to this contract. The construction of Goa Group of Resorts is to commence the beginning of next week and it's crucial that we have that title in our hands. Besides that we do have the titles for Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Calcutta, and Hyderabad correct?"
"Yes we do have those."
"Good at least you did one thing right. Now we must also think about those hotels we are building out of the country. Rahul is in the US discussing the final proposals for New York, and San Francisco. After that he will fly over to London and finalize those details, before making a final stop in Australia. Rahul has those hotels out of the country in order and the construction should commence in all those cities before he comes back. We have to concentrate on those cities in India. And I want to make sure that just because my colleague is taking care of the details of the hotels in other countries does not mean you do not have any responsibilities towards them. I want each and every detail checked over thoroughly from the brick used to staff hired. I assure you Mr. Ahem Modi, any mistakes made on your behalf will not be taken lightly. Do you understand?" Ahem was speechless. He had no words. He simply nodded his head. He was never like this at meetings. He usually had the perfect answer to each and every comment during meetings, but here he was speechless. It was as if she was Ahem Modi and he was Gopi Modi in that conference room.
"Mr. Modi you are the CEO of a huge company like Modi Industries. Don't you have anything to say besides a simple yes? I thought we had given our contract to a strong ruthless businessman who had all the answers before one could even ask the question. You have a very strong and reputable reputation in the business world, but I cannot see that in this room. Please don't make me regret my decision. There are still many companies that can fulfill my desires and wishes so heed my warning. I have nothing further to discuss with you until you have acquired what I have asked for. So if you will please excuse me I have many others tasks awaiting me this afternoon. My secretary Radha will give you a revised copy of the recent plans. Have a good day gentleman." With a simple nod Gopi walked out of the conference room and into her office. Ahem stood there speechless. No one in the business world had ever talked to him like that. Above all else, Gopi was still his wife. It didn't feel like that today. She was so cold and distant as if he was a mere stranger. Each and every word stabbed him in the heart. He looked over at Jigar with sorrow in his eyes. Jigar read his brother's eyes and led him out of the conference room.
"Let's go Bhai. We have a lot to discuss with the family. Staying here isn't going to help the situation anymore. At least we know that Bhabhi is safe." They grabbed the file from Radha before walking out of Shah Industries.
Thanks Eesha! I'm honored and pleased by your update. I have to go now and will write me comments in an hour.
