Part 18: Two Times the Surprise

Prem glanced at his mother and simply handed the invitation over to her. "Heer wanted me to give this to you."

Gayatri took the cream colored envelope into her hands and carefully opened it. As her eyes gently roamed over the gold lettering and elegant design of the wedding invitation the corners of her mouth slowly turned upward into a genuine smile, "It's beautiful. Thank you."

"Well, I should go now," Prem stated and turned to leave.

"Prem, why don't you come in for some chai," Gayatri invited. She knew it was a rather silly request to make but she didn't want him to leave so soon.

Prem stood with his back turned towards his mother a bit stunned by the request. He really wasn't in the mood for tea and didn't want to have to sit in the house with her alone when he was still angry at her. But he reflected what Heer had said that day at the hospital and how he had accused his mother of starting a fight when she didn't; and felt slightly obligated to take the invitation. He turned around and without a word walked into the house.

Gayatri smiled and quickly went into the kitchen to make some chai for the both of them. Prem felt weird sitting in the living of his own home like some guest and decided to go into the kitchen to wait instead. He sat at the table and amused himself with some games on his cell phone. Gayatri went to the pantry to get some tea biscuits, the kind she knew he liked. She saw one lone box on the top shelf but was having trouble reaching it. Just as she was about to give up and go find her step stool a hand reached up into the shelf and pulled the box out. "Here," Prem replied and then stoically walked away. It hurt Gayatri to see this robotic image of her son in front of her when she was so use to his more cheery and affectionate behavior. She continued with her work placing a hand full of tea biscuits on a plate and then went to go check on her water. A few minutes later she was pouring the milky caramel brew into two tea cups. In her haste some of the scolding liquid spilled out onto her hand causing her to yelp in pain. "Ma, you okay?" Prem asked in alarm as he immediately rushed to her side and placed her hand underneath the faucet to cool her hand. Gayatri stared up with teary eyes hearing for the first time in 8 months her son finally addressing her as his mother. After a few minutes Prem realized what he was doing and walked away. He gently took a few sips of chai and ate a tea biscuit before announcing, "Thanks for the chai. I'll be going now."

"Please son, don't go..." Gayatri called.

"You don't have right to call me son," Prem replied rather curtly.

"Why are you doing this to me?" Gayatri asked finally breaking down. She had been relatively aloof during her past interactions with everyone trying to weigh out their reactions before acting on her own. But today she wasn't able to hold her emotions in anymore.

"Do you even have to ask?" Prem replied turning around. "You know why. You think I can just forget everything that happened?"

"I was only doing it for your benefit," Gayatri explained.

"My benefit?" Prem mocked and then snickered in disbelief. "That was for my benefit? You don't trust me to know who is the right one for me? That I can't pick my own partner? That I'm going to be foolish enough to choose someone who's only going to go after my looks or my money? Way to have confidence in me, thanks!"

"At the time she barely had any direction in her life. What was I suppose to think? Your father worked so hard to make the money he made and I wasn't about to see someone come in and snatch it all away...to think she had some right to spend it freely without putting in some sort of effort to hold a job," Gayatri said.

"Ah, so this all boils down to money. Well, you can have my share...I really don't care about it. And the thing is Heer never cared about what was in my wallet. She never asked for expensive jewelry or gifts. She loved me for me...despite all my flaws...she was willing to stand by my side. What more proof do you want than her taking me back...after everything I did to her...what you made me do to her...she was willing to accept me again," Prem said.

"There you go again misunderstanding me. Yes, I was concern about the money not because I want it...but because how it attracts people for the wrong reasons...if one day we woke up and the businesses suddenly collapsed and we lost everything would she be there to support you? Could she be satisfied with just the love and support from family?" Gayatri defend.

"Yes," Prem confidently replied. "She could. When I quit the firm she stood by me...supported me...never let me think that I was any less for not having a job for so long. She encouraged me at every opportunity and gave me the strength to keep going. She made me believe in my talents and refused to let me doubt myself."

"So she's prefect in every way," Gayatri said with slight sarcasm.

"Weren't you trying to push that upon me with Roshni...you want the prefect daughter-in-law right? She was far from perfect. But Heer's not perfect either just like I'm not perfect. I'm stubborn, a workaholic, and have trouble prioritizing, and I act foolishly sometimes. Heer can be temperamental, quick to judge, and a little too direct at times," Prem said. "But does any of this really matter?"

"You really love her?" Gayatri asked.

"Before her I thought I knew what love was but after her...I now know what it really means...how to love unconditionally...unselfishly. Despite the truth of everything she's willing to speak with you...to build some sort of relationship with you not only for the sake of our child but for me...she doesn't want me to regret my decision of breaking our relationship," Prem replied. Gayatri stood there slowly taking in his words over Heer's position in the issue. "I know you had your heart set on Roshni but I will not let you subvert me into submission over my duty as a son just so you can be happy. Don't I deserve to have some happiness? I know there are those who say making their parents happy is all they need to be happy...and I can do most things but this is one issue I am not willing to compromise with. So you can go on hating me for the rest of my life."

Gayatri shook her head as tears streamed down her face, "How could you ever think I could hate you?"

"Because I refused to listen to you," Prem replied his eyes glistening. "Do you know how hurtful it was to listen to you, my Mother the only other person besides Bauji that I respected and loved think those things about my love, my soulmate? Just how I wouldn't be able to stand anyone saying anything ill of my family...I can't stand to hear anyone speak ill of Heer."

"I'm sorry to have hurt you like this," Gayatri said. "You were right to hate me..."

"I never hated you," Prem answered his voice full of emotion. "You can never truly hate the ones you love. But I was disappointed and hurt. And most of all I was angry at myself for letting the situation to come to that point. I should have stood by my choice...that day I betrayed not only myself and Heer but everything that you and Bauji ever taught me to be. My family honor and respect was lost that day." Prem wiped the tears from his eyes and then composed himself, "I'm not the one you have to apologize to." Gayatri saw the pain in his eyes and understood his meaning. She was surprise to see Prem pull a handkerchief from his pocket and gently wipe her tears away. "I have to go. There are a lot of little things left to take care of before the wedding." Gayatri watched her son leave and then looked down at the handkerchief he had left in her hands. She spied some initials on the bottom right corner and unraveled the cloth to see L.J. "I have a lot to make up for Lalit," Gayatri said. "A lot..."

Meher knocked worriedly on the bathroom door as she hadn't heard any sounds coming from inside for awhile, "Are you okay in there?" She sighed in relief when she heard the sound of the toilet flushing and the faucet running.

A few minutes later Heer emerged with an apologetic look on her face, "Sorry Meher."

"It's not anything to be apologizing for. Good thing we brought some mouth wash with us. Why don't you sit down and rest for a bit before we continue?" Meher said and helped Heer sit down in a chair.

"I just hope it stops before the ceremony starts...I do not want to be throwing up at the mandap," Heer sighed as she placed the Listerine mouthwash bottle onto the table.

"I can't believe we didn't figure it out," Veera said in disbelief. "And I thought you were trying to lose a few extra pounds...you were packing your lunch watching what you were eating...refusing to drink alcohol..."

"And to think we actually bought the idea that you and Prem totally decided to give up the hassle of having a huge wedding and wanted a small intimate one instead," Ashlesha said.

"Sorry girls," Heer weakly replied. "My Mom wanted to keep things on the down low to keep the evil eye away and just in case anything should happen to the baby."

"You don't have to apologize, Heer. We totally understand...these things are rather delicate...we'll definitely keep this a secret...and keep your health and the baby in our prayers now that we know," Veera said.

"I got you some warm water, Heer," Sanjana said as she quickly entered the room with a cup. "Gosh, the guys are teasing Prem mercilessly downstairs...they're making it sound like marriage is some sort of death trap or something."

"Oh really?" Meher replied. "Let me guess their ring leader is Preet." Sanjana bit her lower lip realizing she probably should have left that detail out. Meher gave her a reassuring smile. "It's all right. I'm well aware what my husband thinks," shaking her head, "Men, they say all these things but they really want the same thing we want companionship and someone to crawl into bed with at the end of the day."

The girls turned their heads when they heard a soft knock and the door slowly cracking open. Everyone shifted their eyes to Heer when they saw Gayatri Juneja enter the room. Heer gave the signal to the girls that she would be fine and they quickly left the room letting them have their privacy. Heer looked on rather nervously wondering what the Juneja matriarch wanted. Her stomach was still feeling a bit queasy and she didn't know if she could handle getting into an argument. She took a sip of water hoping it would help sooth her stomach.

Gayatri noticed the way Heer was resting her hand on her stomach and gently spoke, "Morning sickness?"

"More like afternoon sickness. I haven't been able to keep anything down all day," Heer replied. "It started about a week ago...I can't believe I'm going to be feeling this for eight weeks."

"The blessing of being pregnant," Gayatri slightly chuckled. "I remember when I was carrying Prem...every morning on the dot at 6am I would be in the bathroom. I wish I could tell you it gets better but it doesn't some days are worse than others." Heer looked at the woman mildly surprised at her rather friendly attitude. She wasn't quite sure if it was because it was her wedding day or because she was recalling some fond memory of Prem. The reaction did not go unnoticed by Gayatri who gave a delicate smile trying to ease her mind. "There are many things you experience in motherhood...from that moment a life is conceived in your womb'you know things will never be the same...the bond you share with your child in those 9 months is something indescribable...something that can be only understood by those who've been through the process. And when you see your child for the first time...his tiny hand curled around your finger as you hold him...you want nothing more than to protect him...to keep the evils of the world away and shower him with unconditional love. You nurture him...teach him values like honor, respect, honesty...and you hope as he grows and matures into adulthood he takes those lessons you've taught with him. But no matter how old he gets or how far he goes from home...that maternal instinct to protect is always there...you can't help but look at him and think he is still your baby. But there has to be a balance...a trust...that he will make the right decisions for himself...and even if he doesn't...those are his mistakes to learn from...regardless what decisions he takes you are suppose to stand by him and support him." Gayatri paused briefly as she blinked back a tear. "I failed to find that balance. I failed to trust Prem. I failed to support him in his decision. Through my own insecurities and over protectiveness I failed to give a chance to someone who should have been given that chance. I'm sorry Heer and I seek your forgiveness."

Heer sat there stunned hearing the last few comments coming from Gayatri's mouth. She quickly stood up preventing her from folding her hands in front of her. "No, Auntie...please. I can understand I was really young...Prem was in his last semester in grad school...he was already out there in the world working and I was just starting college thinking I had my whole life ahead of me. The truth is we needed time to mature...to find what we really wanted in life and from each other."

Gayatri gently placed her hand on her cheek, "I've really misjudged you. You have my blessings." Heer felt herself go speechless as tears began to well up in her eyes. Gayatri nodded her head to reconfirm her statement. "I promise you I will always be by his side to support him, to take care of him, and to love him. And I want you to know though I may be his wife that you are still his mother...I would never dream of taking that place in his heart," Heer said. Gayatri was surprised by her words. "After everything I've learned recently I know you're not the type to try something like that. You're his wife...he belongs to you now...all I ask is to take care of him," she replied. Heer gave a watery smile and then they both fell into a natural hug. After a few minutes Heer pulled away sniffling. Gayatri tenderly wiped her tears away with her thumbs, "Your makeup."

"It's okay, Meher has to fix it anyways after throwing up so many times this morning," Heer replied. She gently wiped the tears from Gayatri's cheeks. "Thank you..."

"Ma," Gayatri simply answered.

Heer smiled, "Thank you, Ma."

They shared another hug and then broke apart when they heard the door open. Teji walked in followed by two of Heer's closest cousins and Meher and the rest of the girls. "The guests are starting to come now...we have to get you ready," Teji said. Heer noticed the way Gayatri gently placed her hand on her mother's arm and the understanding smile her mother gave in return. It was obvious from the interaction that some sort of peace had been made between them. Heer sighed in relief that they were getting along now. She really didn't need them bickering at one another. She sat back down in her chair and let Meher finish touching up her makeup.

Teji stared with emotional eyes at her daughter in her full wedding attire; her mind flashbacked to memorable moments of Heer as she grew from child to adult. Her tears slowly fell as she realized what this special day meant. "Mom," Heer softly said coming to comfort her. Teji hugged her daughter and sniffled, "I'll be all right. Come, Prem's waiting for you...if we don't come down soon he'll probably storm into this room to take you down himself." Heer laughed at her comment. "He would do something like that." Teji pulled back and smiled while Heer wiped her tears away, "Your makeup." Her mother shook her head, "Yours is more important than mine," and then took her final gaze at her daughter, "You ready?"

"Yes," Heer smiled brightly.

*******************************************************************

Prem stared anxiously at the entrance way he knew Heer would be entering from. He placed two fingers between the fabric of his collar and his neck and tugged slightly trying to give himself some relief from the sudden unbearable warmth he was feeling. "Maybe she decided to run away," a gruff voice said next to him. Prem turned in alarm facing the person who wore a teasing grin on his face. The man extended his hand, "Milind, Heer's brother."

"Oh, hey..." Prem replied suddenly recognizing him from all the pictures Heer had shown him. "Wait, I thought you had a business trip and you couldn't make it."

"I lied. I thought I surprise her," Milind said with a twinkle of mischief in his eyes. "Heard some interesting things about you." Prem flexed his eyebrows in fear wondering what he heard. Milind smiled dangerous as he placed his hand on his shoulder. Prem felt the pressure of his squeeze and swallowed uncomfortably. Heer always described her brother as someone who was like a big giant teddy bear. He looked ferocious but was soft at heart. As Prem stood there underneath the deathly gaze of the man who was just a few inches taller and more built than him, he thought otherwise. Milind was more like a grizzly bear than a teddy bear. "You better take good care of her...otherwise...well, let's just say...the human body is amazing at how well it can adapt when it loses extraneous parts...I mean do you really need 10 fingers and toes?"

"Milind!" Balraaj shouted in glee breaking apart the little chat the two men were having. Prem felt relieved and welcomed the interruption.

"Dad," Milind smiled cheery as he gave his father a hug.

"Made it just in time. They should be coming down any minute now. Come, let's go to our proper places," Balraaj instructed.

Prem smiled politely and exhaled. It wasn't long before Preet and some of his cousin's came to his side with his garland. "It's show time," Preet smirked as he nudged Prem to look over at the entrance way. Prem couldn't trust his eyes as he looked at the woman making her way towards him. She was finally there in the flesh. Her beauty radiating so exquisitely from the bridal saree she wore that it took his breath away. This was the first time today he was seeing her. His cousins had been successful in keeping him away from her. He had woken up extremely early in the morning in the hopes of being able to sneak away for a few hours to go secretly meet with Heer. But his cousins knew of his plan and caught him just as he about to leave. Prem felt they were being entirely too ruthless with him when they took his phone away. The two minute conversation he and Heer managed to have in the morning burned in his heart. The sweet tender words they said to each other gave him the strength to endure the nutty family commotions that were driving both him and Heer crazy. They were surprise to see that despite the short notice they had a fairly good turnout of family support.

Heer saw the intense love following from Prem's eyes as the group made their way closer to exchange garlands. In private, Heer wouldn't have mind but under the watchful eye of the public she felt herself suddenly feeling shy and timidly looked downward. A slow blush crept into her cheeks as the girls and her cousins started to make fun and tease her.

The minutes seemed to tick by slowly as Prem and Heer did all the necessary religious and ceremonial rites. Eventually the moment that Prem had been so anxiously waiting for had finally arrived. They walked around the fire completing the saat phere and then Prem tied the mangalsutra around Heer's neck. He smiled at Heer as he took a pinch of sindoor and carefully moved the maang tikka aside with his pinky to place the red powder on her hair sealing them together in holy matrimony as husband and wife. Heer shyly looked down trying to contain some sort of modesty at her jubilant feelings while Prem unabashedly grinned, his smile stretching from ear to ear.

Rip roaring cheers soon erupted from the crowd and then everyone shuffled their way out of the temple to go to the reception hall to continue the joyous celebrations of two lovers and two households uniting. The lively atmosphere was enhanced even more with the cousins supporting their perspective sides playing the usual wedding games. Prem was without his shoes for most of the night as Heer's cousins had managed to successfully take them away. The food and drinks were being enjoyed by all and the DJ they hired was able to keep the dancing merriment alive and well past midnight. Eventually the party ended and Prem paid his dues to get his shoes back before getting into his car with Heer to go to the hotel.

"You two buckled up?" Preet asked as he started the car. "No foreplay and naughtiness back there...save that for the room."

Heer turned bright red at his comments while Prem said in a terse tone, "Driver, mind your own business and get us to the hotel."

"Ah, yes I'm the driver...I can take the long way or I can take the short cut to the hotel...it all depends on how you treat me," Preet smirked.

"Maybe I should have asked Meher to drive," Prem replied.

"But she's not here. She just left to go to the hotel so she can pick me up. So, what will it be?" Preet mischievously asked.

Prem grumbled and slapped a twenty into Preet's hand, "Just drive Preet."

"Sweet, I was only joking but thanks for the twenty. I'll consider it as a donation to my future kid's education fund," Preet said.

"You and Meher are thinking about having kids?" Heer asked.

"We've been talking about it. But I don't think anytime real soon...at least not for another two years. I want us to first buy a house and get more financially stable. But as Meher puts it when are you really financially stable? Anyways, first step is to find us a house," Preet answered.

"I don't know how you feel about it but I've noticed a couple of houses up for sale around our neighborhood. If you guys are interested," Prem suggested.

"Sounds great. I'll tell Meher about it and maybe we can go look at them with our retailer," Preet said.

*******************************************************************

Heer sighed happily as she gathered a handful of soap bubbles and gently blew them outward towards the other end of the large jacuzzi bathtub. The room was dimmed low allowing the candles to illuminate its warm glow across the rose petals scattered around. The atmosphere was so romantic and soothing to her after such a long day. Her stomach had been queasy throughout the entire ceremony and reception but not to the point where she had to visit the restroom to relieve herself in an unpleasant manner. She was finally at peace now and just wanted to sit back and enjoy the evening. There was just one problem she was missing the one person who'd make the night even more complete. There was a soft knock on the bathroom door and then Prem popped his head into the room with a smile, "So, how are you feeling?"

"A lot better, thank you for drawing the bath. You sure you don't want to join me? It's still nice and warm. There is plenty of room for two," Heer invited.

Prem shook his head, "No, this was for you to enjoy."

Heer noticed as Prem entered the room he was in his pajamas and his hair was wet. "Did you take a shower?"

"Yeah, in the second bathroom," Prem replied.

"You could have taken one here. Why did you go over there?" Heer asked.

"I didn't want to disturb your bubble bath," Prem said. He spied the empty plate on the side of the bathtub and grinned. "Looks like you got your appetite back. I was worried...you weren't eating very much during dinner."

"Wasn't like we had any opportunity to really eat anyways...you hardly eat either with all the people we had to talk to. But my stomach finally decided to stop. I just hope it doesn't come and bite me back tomorrow morning," Heer sighed. "Did you eat?"

"Yeah, I did. Thanks for telling Meher to fix us a box of food and leaving it in the room. The thought never crossed my mind that we would be hungry later," Prem said. "So, how did you find our reception food?"

"Not bad," Heer replied. She then flipped the drain lever and the gurgling sound of water being emptied out of the tub began to echo in the room.

"Let me help you get out. I don't want you to slip and fall," Prem said. He quickly grabbed two towels; one for the steps and one for her. He wrapped the towel around Heer and then helped her step out of the deep tub. Heer smiled and threw her arms around his neck to give him an affectionate kiss. "What was that for?" he asked.

"For everything," Heer simply replied. "And for being my husband."

Prem grinned. "Well than in that case..." he said and returned the favor by giving her a sweet kiss. "Thank you for being my wife." Her smile brightened even more. "Let's get your hair dried," he said and moved her out of the bathroom. Heer looked at the room and smirked that he had already turned down the bed. The extraneous pillows had been removed and the covers where pulled back so the inviting white sheets were exposed. Rose petals adorn the bed and the flickering candles arranged around the bedroom set the romantic mood. She sat on the corner of the bed as Prem came back from the bathroom with another towel to dry her hair. He gently massaged the wet strands trying his best to soak up the water with the towel. Heer's normally straight hair had turned slightly wavy from the bath. "I think that's as good as it will get," Heer said as she gripped the towel on both sides of her head causing Prem to stop.

"Oh, before I forget," Prem said and quickly hopped off the bed. He dug through his suitcase and smiled when he located the Tiffany & Co. box. "This belongs to you now." He took her left hand and slipped off the engagement ring placing it into the palm of her right hand. He then opened the box and held the wedding band up for her to see. "4 Eternity P&H," Prem said as he read off the inscription on the band. "Now, you know. It says the same thing on my band too. I know ever since the engagement ceremony you've been trying to take it off of me trying to see the inscription. I couldn't come up with anything better considering the space and all."

Heer shook her head as she looked at the inscription, "It's prefect Prem." She handed the ring back to him and smiled, "Will you do the honors?"

Prem smirked and slipped the wedding band on her ring finger. "For eternity now Heer," he said. She leaned in whispering against his lips, "For eternity," before giving a tender kiss. Prem smiled and then slipped the engagement ring on top of the band. "The set is finally complete."

Heer gently brushed her hand across his hair, "I love you."

"I love you too," Prem replied and pulled her into a hug. Heer could feel her towel loosen as the corner she had tucked in flipped out. The towel still clung to her body only because of Prem's arms wrapped around her waist. She glanced up at Prem and recognized the dreamy bedroom eyes he was giving her. "Are you up for some celebrating Mrs. Juneja?" he asked.

Heer inched her lips closer to his, "Lucky for you Mr. Juneja I'm feeling up to it." Feeling her warm breath against his skin Prem automatically parted his lips in heated anticipation. They kissed gently at first but with each passing kiss the passion between them grew; their bodies yearning for more contact. Prem pulled back a little causing Heer to quickly grip her towel and fix it into place. He chuckled, "Why so modest? That's going to go in the next few minutes anyways." Heer smiled and gave him a sensual kiss pulling back slowly making Prem long for more. "Shirt," she commanded as she stepped backwards toward the bed. Prem smirked and lifted the cotton fabric off his torso tossing it haphazardly to the side. There was always a rush of excitement that flowed through Heer when he exposed himself this way to her. His chisel chest and tone stomach looked even more appealing underneath the romantic lighting. She loved Prem for who he was but she had to admit that it was a bonus to see him so physically fit. Her heart fluttered as he stalked his way closer to the bed. "Pants," Heer ordered. Prem stopped and quickly slipped off his pajama pants. The look of intensity in his eyes showed just how much he wanted her and she couldn't help but melt underneath his gaze. Before Heer could say anything else he was by her side, "You're mine now," he said ardently. Heer giggled as they fell onto the bed together. It wasn't long before soft moans and sweet murmurs filled the room. A towel and a pair of boxer shorts were soon flung from underneath the crisp white bed sheet as a loving mound formed. The night seemed to stand still as two souls intertwined with tender passion expressing their love and commitment towards each other.

Well, I hope the wedding scene was all right. I'm not Indian and the two Indian weddings I did attend were fusion weddings cause the grooms were non-Indian...so I have no idea what really goes on in a traditional wedding 😛...only the things I see during the movies or serials 😆

This SS is probably going to wrap up soon as there isn't much left to write about. Don't worry the little one in Heer's belly will make an appearance before I end it all. Really appreciate those who have stuck with me on this little venture. Not as exciting as my other FF and with low TRPs there were a couple of times I wanted to just stop 😳
.

Thanks for all your support!
