Chapter 34

Nupur cut the call, and she was not looking where she was going as she moved towards the security check in area at Newark Airport as she turned to see what was keeping her bag from being dragged and bumped into something that made the front of her white collared Polo tshirt wet and soaked through to her skin and it felt cold. She heard a sorry from a voice that was so deep throated, she felt goosebumps on her and she thought it was not just the cold drink on her that gave them to her.

She looked up to see a gorgeous face that matched the voice, and blinked. She almost lost what she was going to say in anger but the contrition on his face stopped her from ranting on which Nupur would usually have done. She then saw a change in expression on the guy's face, from remorse to something akin to unexpected desire and then moved her head down to follow his gaze and saw the soaked white tshirt and her bra had almost turned transparent and her pert breasts were almost showing through as if she were naked in front of him, embarrassed and angry, she covered them with her hands and lost her phone to ground in the process and muttered under her breath, Saala lichad! Ek to geela karta hai aur ghoorta hai! Then she bent to pick up her phone and gave him a view as if all his Christmases had rolled into one.

He coughed, and came down on his haunches as he was sure she wouldn't appreciate a man getting aroused with just a peek at her luscious self, he helped her with the phone and the bag and took his time getting back on his feet and said, I am reall sorry, miss, I was not looking where I was going and I when I did it was too late. He then removed his jacket, and gave it to her to cover herself saying, least I can do. The jacket in question was a North Face, venture jacket, which once removed revealed a sky blue Polo slim tshirt, not unlike hers that covered his chiseled torso like a second skin. The bulging biceps and twitching muscles on the chest were evidence enough that this guy was a fitness freak and what's more she didn't have look down up into his face, he was definitely 6'2" if not more. She almost dropped everything again as he put his jacket covering her from neck and his fingers touched her jaw. He adjusted it to his satisfaction and then said, you might uh! Want to go to the washroom and get cleaned up. He said, I shall wait for you outside the washroom, indicating the jacket and her suitcase. She said, I'll need the bag, stuffing her phone in her jean pocket and taking control of the situation, she went towards the near by washroom, once inside she opened the bag and got another tshirt out, and changed into it after cleaning up, ran a comb through her short easy to maintain hair and put on some gloss. She did something which she will probably wonder why for a long time, she inhaled into the jacket and closed her eyes as if wanting to put to memory the smell of that man.

She scowled at herself in the mirror then held the jacket away as if it was contaminated and went out to find, THE MAN, waiting for her. As if she was going to steal his jacket she acidly thought. She reached him not happy with her earlier behavior coming out on him. Here you go! She almost stuffed it in his hands and was about to walk off when he asked, how about a drink, if your flight is not yet announced? she was trying to place the accent, it was not exactly American sounded mostly British but there were some words which were so American. She stopped, said, so you can spill it on me again? He laughed, he had a hearty laugh, not loud, not soft, just manly, Oh God! Thought Nupur why am I even thinking what his laugh is like! And said, Do you find it amusing to drop drinks on people? He shook his head and said No! I was trying to do reparation here but I guess you might be a nervous flyer and I have spoilt it further. I am actually trying to apologise for the mishap.

Nupur almost abused him at that little nervous flyer jibe but held herself back, she did have a temper but was not given to flying off her handle at total strangers even when they were as annoying as this sexy one. Now where did this sexy come into the picture, she grimaced at her thoughts and told him, No politely. He did not seem to like taking no for an answer, Look I really would like to apologise and also I do need another drink, considering, he pointed at the tshirt change. Obnoxious, thought, Nupur and said, Its alright, you go have your drink, thanks for the jacket and walked off.

God she muttered to herself, is this flight going to be a disaster or what? First the tickets, they did not have a business class seat so she had bought an economy considering she was in a hurry to get to Nargis and now this obnoxious man who did not know how to apologise. He did do everything that had her hackles rise to the point where she was ready to hit. Anyway why am I thinking about him and then went to one of the Duty Free to while away time till her flight was announced. She was not the kind to sit still. She always had to be doing something. She was a very active person right from childhood and had extra energy which always needed working out.

She and Nargis always went for their runs together once they had gotten older, but in their early days they always had summers filled with pool and game of racket ball as teens and gym and run depending on weather during ungraduate program. She had gone to MIT to become an Architect. They had initially stayed on campus and met up after classes but later on after two years, they had taken up accommodation together in Cambridge and used to cycle to their respective classes. Their favorite haunts were Christophers and there were couple of Indian and Mediterranean places near Harvard Square that they frequented when they didn't cook at their apartment. Both Nargis and Nupur were tall for Indian girls and were mistaken for other nationality often enough for them to have made it their private joke and took bet on which nationality the other person could become. She stood at 5'10" and was athletic built with curves at the right places. She was a little on the thin side when compared to Nargis who had a figure to die for but she felt it was better than being fat.

She had gone back to New Jersey as her mother had needed her due to ill health and started working for a small architect locally after finishing her degree and not take up job in New York which was one of the leading Construction companies in the country. She had then moved on to do projects on her own and set up her own firm. She specialized in residential building and had interest in landscaping but she had also dabbled in commercial structures as well. She had developed a good network over the last 6 years and had projects even in these trying times. She had come a long way from taking care of her mother in between work and helping father out in dealing with mother's illness.

Nupur had been reminiscing while browsing throught the Duty for almost half hour now and had not realized a guy was looking at her with questioning eyes. She realized it was the same man, who had washed her in coke and looked away. God! Didn't the guy have a flight to catch or something, why was he staring at her? She decided to walk to her gate and wait out the next half hour before her flight was announced. He then came up behind her and said, Missed your flight? In a seductive tone that sent a shiver down her spine and she wiggled at the sensation and turned, You again! No I didn't! but looks like you don't take a hint.

He said, I was actually going to go away but I think you might need this if you plan to buy anything here gesturing the Duty Free and brought out her wallet which must have fallen when they had bumped. Oh! How did you get this? Taking the wallet and checking the contents. He said, I took the 500 note, she gasped looking up and saw the smile he gave and her heart lurched for some obscure reason and she smiled back hesitating and pointing the checking as an instinctive action and shrugged her shoulders and said, I uh, it was just instinct, and then laughed out loud. He held up his hands and said, couldn't resist. Sorry again. My, I am apologizing a lot to you aren't i. By the way, I am Dev and you? Nargis looked up and said, Arjun? You are Indian? Taking the hand he had proferred and said Nupur when he nodded. Dev raised an eyebrow in question, I would never have guessed, you look, she joined him and said, Italian together and laughed out again. She said I have had that and I usually can tell an Indian man but you look different.

He had wavy hair that was almost curly and jet black, but it was the eyes that were the oddest. He had grey eyes. The trace of accent now she could understand must be the Indian ness in him but it still niggled her. She knew she was good at placing people, it was part of her observation routine she did while waiting at airports, offices, restaurants, theatres, well it was just observation. She loved to play games with herself of guessing the person in front of her; it helped her in developing designs for people. She used it as her drawing board to understand psyche of what people will pick, like, do and was usually right in her observation but again she had not observed this man just bumped into him and been angry with him. That clouded decisions. She had this habit of tuning out of everything and was brought back to present with a shake on her shoulder with the hand that he was not holding hers. She snatched her hand back in realization and he smiled again. He said, if you really don't have a flight to catch now, how about a drink, I have a flight to London in half an hour, what about you? She automatically answered, mine is to Frankfurt enroute to New Delhi and I have half hour before I have to report to the gate so what the hell, let's have a drink. Promise you won't spill it on me.

Dev laughed, he liked this woman's quips, she has a sense of humour he thought even though she is crazy to certain extent. They then went to the nearby Starbucks and both them took a chilled Apple cider. They chatted easily after the initial hiccup, about their backgrounds.

Dev Khanna, was a software engineer now working with a company in London. He had studied together with Maan Khurana and was great friends with them. He was from Boston, born bred though he had India in his blood. He came from family of engineers both his parents were engineers from IIT, Delhi and then came to MIT to do their masters and had settled here in Boston and worked for Oricle. Mom Mrs Devika Khanna had started working from home after his birth and continued to be one of the best software developers. Dad was a genius, he had become the head of R&D for Oricle and was responsible for the birth and development of relational database management for Windows.

Mr Rahul Khanna was an important person in the technology industry. Dev had a tough time following the footsteps of his father but had won his praise when his white paper had become a new way of writing algorithms for search engines. Dev was a genius in the Internet and search on internet algorithms, he worked with Boogle a leading multinational public cloud computing, Internet search, and advertising technologies corporation. Boogle hosts and develops a number of Internet-based services and products and he in his initial phase in San Fransisco and then moved to take care of the Boogle's advanced information-retrieval algorithms department.

He had finally followed his father in being in the R&D department. He was probably one the geeks who did not epitomize geek in terms of his looks and manner. No one who met Dev for the first time, took him for the genius they had heard or read about. He was either too good looking, too articulate, too svaue or too easy going to be a geek who could play with codes and make them do what no one thought about. The success of Boogle's cloud computing was because of Dev and he was sucha low profile person that his photos, were few or next to none anywhere in the world. Afterall, he knew what boogling could do to one word or photo.

Nupur told him that she was an architect who did preminantly residential projects. Dev left most of his achievements behind and simply gave her a sketch of a person who was a software engineer, working in London and a health freak as evident from his chiseled body. They discussed the airport's architectural inspiration and the new look that made all the airports almost look alike. Soon it was time for them to part. He told her it was literally nice to bump into her and may be they will bump into each other again. Nupur had left feeling as if something in that statement was a promise rather than a chance meeting. She shook hands with him and left for her gate and Dev had moved to the opposite direction.

Nargis after disconnecting the call had surveyed her room with a bright color on her cheeks, her clothes lay strewn all over and there was no sign of Vicky. He had left a note on the pillow next to her saying, have to go to office, will catch up with you later, xx Vicky. P.S. you looked adorable in your sleep so didn't wake you.

She smiled at the note and went to take a shower. It was gone five and there was no point in going to office so called her assistant and told her she wont be coming in today finally and get back to getting her apartment in order.

Abs had been going through another office phone calls while Maan went downstairs almost an hour back to talk to Daadi. Just as her patience was coming to an end, Maan came up to the lounge and said, Cherie! Daadima has called you, its almost time but before then she wants to speak with you.

With trepidation, she went to the Study with her hand in Maan's.
