Kangna plays a Bollywood diva, Rehana, who falls in love with Ajay Devgn's character, Sultan (based on Haji Mastan), and their relationship is an integral part of the plot. Her character is modelled on Sona, Haji Mastan's love interest and wife in real life. He fell in love with her because she resembled his favourite actress, Madhubala. Kangna tracked down Sona and met her to prepare for the role.
She also prepared a spiral-bound book about how she would look in each scene; the clothes, hair, accessories and make-up. She researched Indian and Western trends prevalent at that time. The fashion designers Manoshi Nath and Rushi Sharma incorporated her inputs.
Director Milan Luthria said, 'Kangna has a versatile face, and she suits different looks. She has a great body and never looks vulgar. There is a lot of her in the character she plays. The 70s was the time of flower-power, people were living-in together, and women were being liberated. Her clothes and attitude reflect all those changes.'
