Oh yes, Ujjain, the RSS stronghold - with a CM as deeply rooted RSS/BJP supporter with maaany RSS volunteers at hand - worshipped Modi like a god... like so many other political autocratic leaders before him made people do in their respective countries (my country belongs to them).

Historians, sociologists, and political scientists analyze universal propaganda mechanisms associated with the cult of personality in the context of such grandiose mass events. Regardless of era or geography, autocratic or fiercely nationalist regimes employ recurring patterns to consolidate power.

Maybe a little overview would sound familiar?

1. When political leaders are placed within the context of temples, sacred rivers, or divine rituals, it is the fusion of political power and religious symbolism. Political decisions are removed from the realm of rational debate; anyone who voices criticism is no longer merely criticizing a law but is symbolically committing an offense against something sacred, e.g. the Savior narrative where the leader is portrayed as a "divine instrument" or a "savior in times of need" who leads the country toward a glorious future (2047, right?).

2. Overwhelming aesthetics with millions of lights, gigantic portraits, or torchlight processions stretching for kilometers create a sense of infinity. Within the mass (here the organized RSS volunteers) the individual is absorbed. Only the collective matters, paying homage to the Leader.

3. The staging of 'voluntariness' and 'unity' is a key propaganda tactic in state-orchestrated events to project the image of the 'entire nation' (actually the Hindi-speaking parts) standing united and enthusiastic behind the leader. What is the aim? Well...to create the impression of 'pure, organic affection' from the populace.

Cults of personality rarely function solely in the here and now... the leader is portrayed as the figure who puts an end to a whatever 'humiliation' of the country and restores the nation to a (former) - often mythological - greatness (here not the promise of a '1000-year-long Empire' but of a great India in 21 years). So, what did Modi's birthday become? Well...a celebration of a (collective) myth of rebirth.

Who paid for that??? Well... the taxpayers...

Imagine, just imagine, one would not make a PM's birthday like copied out of the "Handbook for Dictators" but instead use the money for the physical, emotional, and educational well-being of the common people.
