Pitch and conditions: More of the same

The pitch should continue to be good for batting, and the small dimensions should aid the batters. There is some western disturbance taking shape around north-western India, but the risk of rain in Delhi is strictly moderate.

Stats and trivia: Rashid eyes 200 T20I wickets

  • Sanju Samson has played more than 15 balls in an innings four times out of 16 this year, but has gone past 50 every time he has gone past 15 balls.

  • This will be Delhi's 17th T20I, the joint second-highest for an Indian ground along with Mumbai. Kolkata has hosted 19.

  • Samson is now the fifth Indian opener to have scored 1000 T20I runs.

  • Rashid Khan is four away from 200 T20I wickets.

It's time for the third and final T20I between Afghanistan and India in Delhi before both teams head to Japan for the 2026 Asian Games. Afghanistan have made huge strides in white-ball cricket over the last few years, but they have struggled to compete in this series, losing both matches comprehensively. The first two games followed a strikingly similar pattern: India won the toss, put Afghanistan in, and watched them falter at different stages - in the powerplay in the first T20I and during the middle overs in the second - and then posted below-par totals on a good batting surface with short boundaries, only for India to race through the chases, smashing 82 runs in the powerplay and finishing with plenty of overs to spare each time. Can Afghanistan finally break the script tonight and, more importantly, register their first-ever win over India?

At the end of the second T20I, Shreyas Iyer hinted that India could hand game time to those yet to feature in the series. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Washington Sundar and Yash Thakur are the three players waiting in the wings. The sensational 15-year-old opener Sooryavanshi could come in for Abhishek Sharma, while the team management may not want to rest Sanju Samson after his blistering fifty in the second T20I, having struggled for runs before that knock. Thakur and Washington, meanwhile, could replace Jasprit Bumrah and Shivam Dube/Axar Patel respectively.

India (Playing XI): Sanju Samson(w), Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer(c), Tilak Varma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Yash Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah

Shreyas Iyer: We would have batted first. It also gives us a fun challenge. It's important that we stick to the moment and not complicate things. One change - Yash comes in for Arsh.

Ibrahim Zadran: We are going to bowl first. We wanted to bowl first in the last two games as well, but unfortunately, we lost the toss. If you look at the wicket, it's quite supportive for the bowlers, and I'm sure we will execute our plans well in the bowling department. We will try to put pressure on them and not allow them to put a big score on the board. [What's the team's mindset after the series defeat?] We have lost the series, but we thought about the areas we need to work on and what we haven't done well in the last two games. We will try to play better cricket and win a game against them to finish well. And yes, India are one of the best teams. They have, I would say, all the departments covered in T20 cricket, but we always try to make things easy for ourselves and not complicate them. We just try to give 100% and play better cricket against them. [Any changes?] Yes, we have got two changes. Gulbadin Naib and Noor Ahmad are not playing.

Afghanistan have won the toss and have opted to field

It is very disappointing from Gambhir to not let Vaibhav play tonight.

The series is already won..He gave chance to Yash today, why not Vaibhav.

He has personal dislike for Vaibhav.

Why we need Vaibhav now? We need to Create spot in opener slot so he need to wait till Sep 22 vs Japan or in Asian Games
