1"a lesser known... chapter"??? that would surprise me as it was quite spectacular what Gandhi did - at least imo... What I know about those 21 days...
While all of India celebrated the birth of independence in New Delhi on August 15, 1947, and power was formally transferred, Gandhi was deeply saddened. Why???
Well, Independence was accompanied by the bloody partition of the country into India and Pakistan. Gandhi deliberately did not travel to Delhi for the celebrations; instead, he withdrew from the center of political power and traveled to the very epicenter of the religious unrest-Calcutta. Why exactly there???
I think, there are three reasons:
- Life in a crisis zone: He took up residence in an abandoned house in a Kolkata neighborhood devastated by religious hatred between Hindus and Muslims.
- His fast: When violence escalated again in late August, Gandhi began an indefinite fast. He declared that he would not eat again until the violence ceased. This fast had a profound psychological impact... (which I won't tell because if the movie is indeed about this subject, one will experience it).
- Personal reinvention: By turning his back on the new political elite in Delhi, Gandhi redefined his role - from a party political strategist he shifted to the moral conscience of a fractured nation.
Personally, I ask myself if becoming the moral conscience of a nation lead to his death at the hands of Godse just some months later.
