Dear Indians, as we celebrate our independence month, each and every day becomes a living reminder of multiple instances that made us self sustained, whether you are living in India or have made a life abroad for work, studies or family; this Independence Day History Series is for each and every one of you. No matter where life has taken us, our shared history, our freedom and our love for India continue to unite us.

There were uncountable small instances where our common people strived, when our leaders revolt and when our ancestors just denied to comply... And all those instances led to create a feeling in the occupiers that they can't control is

While some events have become an inseparable part of our history, many others never received the recognition they truly deserved.doesn't, Maybe not completely forgotten, but largely limited to one paragraph of our history books...

The last train of the day had departed from the platform. An elderly woman sat there, unaware that the next train would only arrive the next morning. A porter noticed her and asked—

“Maa-ji (Mother), where are you going?”

“I am going to Delhi to my son.”

“There are no more trains today, Maa-ji.”

The woman looked helpless. The kind porter offered her shelter in the waiting room. She agreed. The porter asked her about her son. The old woman replied that her son worked in the railways. The porter asked for the name, suggesting he might be able to contact him...

“He is my Laal (darling son), everyone calls him Lal Bahadur Shastri!” the old woman replied simply.

That son was, at the time, the Railway Minister of India.

In an instant, the entire station was in a commotion. The railway staff arranged a special pass for the Railway Minister's family and booked a reserved compartment (saloon coach) on an incoming train shortly after. The elderly woman was astonished. Lal Bahadur Shastri knew nothing about this entire affair. All the arrangements were made by the Indian Railways on its own accord.

After meeting her son, she asked him—

“Son, what exactly do you do on the rail?”

He replied—

“Mata Ji, I do small, small jobs (minor work)!” (Credit: Google)

Yes... Lal Bahadur Shastri was a frredom fighter and an important leader in the Indian independence movement before later serving as India's second Prime Minister. He joined the freedom movement at a young age because he was deeply moved by Mahatma Gandhi’s teachings and calls for non-violent resistance. He took part in major national campaigns, including the Non-Cooperation Movement in 1920 and the Quit India Movement in 1942.

Will we be fortunate enough to see another leader like him who can reinvent a religiously free, caste-free, politically empowered, and democratic India?
