They achieved this feat in 2016 by taking the arduous "Eliminator" route. Because they finished 3rd, they had to win three consecutive knockout matches to lift the trophy

1. Eliminator: Defeated Kolkata Knight Riders.
2. Qualifier 2: Defeated Gujarat Lions.
3. Final: Defeated Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

No team has ever won the IPL championship from the 4th place position, and Sunrisers Hyderabad remains the sole exception to teams qualifying from the 3rd or 4th spots.
