Sorry, I guess I misunderstood. I was of the opinion that your post supported 8-hour shifts. 😅
Yes, commerce does indeed run everything. Everyone has an objective to earn money. I don’t think entertainment should be social service, nor do I believe it is.
But just because you pay someone, you don’t own them or get to not give a damn about their rest or physical, emotional, and mental health.
But every profession has certain requirements not everything can be equated. In this case, the actor has to decide how much they want to push their capacity and also be ready to take the consequences, like fewer work opportunities, pay anything. It is not just in entertainment industry, any other profession/industry. Example: If i insist on working in a certain timezone (say only IST), then i should be prepared to forego off opportunites that work in say, US, UK.
After a hectic shoot of 12–14 hours, they’ll be hard-pressed to care about anything else. I know they sign up knowing the difficult hours; still, there must be a certain level of empathy.
Every profession comes with its own set of issues.
@bold: I don’t know about now, but there were very successful shows that aired on weekends. Audiences can be held if the plotline is suitably engaging enough.
@violet: Agreed. But empathy takes a hard beating in a face-off against money usually. If producers had actual empathy, I don’t think actors would have such rigorous schedules. It is even more difficult for the spot/set dadas, who have to pack up after them and arrive before them for the shoot. After working 16–17 hours, how much time do they have left for their personal lives?
Empathy, Sensitivity are qualities everyone should be inculcated with. It is a necessity, but that cannot be mesurable. I can empathise with the person, but there is only so much one can do.
Take your example: the support staff like, lightsmen, cameramen, set designer, Spotboys, costumes, etc. Start work atleast a couple of hours before and couple of hours after pack-up. If the work duration is limited to 8 hours, they still have to work 12 hour schedules. Limited hours means production time increases, suppose there are outdoor shoots or restricted areas, that duration increases. Why would someone agree to that?
Laws are framed keeping everyone in mind. An actor expecting to work 8 hours shouldn’t be allowed to take multiple shows at a time—like moonlighting in professional sectors. Yes, I know it’s an unstable industry with zero job security. Like all professional industries, it should have a notice period, at least a heads-up, severance pay, etc. Acting is also a profession, so why isn’t it treated that way?
Because the shelf life of an actor is very limited. Not ALL professions can ever be the same. Would we extend the same logic or rules to Law Enforcement and Defense? Why not?
Because they chose a profession that might be a tad unstable, should it mean they have to enslave themselves to it?
Working a certain hours is a choice the actor takes. The profession demands certain hours, if the actors chooses to restrict their hours, they also have to take the risk of a shorter career.
I know my demands are probably suited to an ideal world, but asking for reasonable working hours shouldn’t be a privilege.

Every profession comes with it's practical challenges.
Every profession should be given the respect and Dignity and good snd safe working conditions. People should behave with empathy.
Thank you Daksha kaki.

I’m not suggesting that all professions are the same, but laws should be framed with consideration of the specific nature of each profession. Acting, for example, is not a form of social service; it is a profession that actively involves a lot of financial compensation.
Exactly, because each profession comes with its unique challenges, we need the government to frame laws that ensure at least some basic level of regulation and fairness.
Law and defense, on the other hand, aren’t strictly professions in the traditional sense—they are services to humanity, to the country, and to society. Yeh alag baat hai ki maybe only half of them have that thought. It might be regarded as a profession, it isn’t one that revolves around money or profit. Policemen and soldiers, for instance, willingly risk their lives on a daily basis, which is simply not the same.
The time zone or working hours shouldn’t be the most critical factor. For example, if actors have to be at a set at 3 a.m., the least that can be done is ensuring they are wrap by 11 or 12 in the afternoon.
Although I agree that an actor’s career lifespan is much shorter, and they aim to earn as much as possible during that period.
Perhaps a complete overhaul might be asking too much, but even small changes can make a significant difference over time.
@b: completely agree. Kindness should be inherent.
