In the Courtyard of Waiting, New Footsteps Shall Come

The lamps in the chamber glowed softly, casting warm light over the carved stone walls. Ayodhya was at peace at last, but inside, in this quiet corner of the palace, the reunion of a mother, her son, and her daughter-in-law was what mattered most.

Sumitra sat in her white sari, her hands resting on Lakshman’s head and arm as if he were still the little boy who once clung to her. Lakshman knelt at her feet with his eyes closed, soaking in the comfort of her touch. Beside them, Urmila stood quietly, watching with a smile that spoke more than words.

“You’ve come back to me safe,” Sumitra said softly, her voice full of relief and love. “All these years, I prayed for you every day.”

Lakshman opened his eyes, emotion shining in them. “It was your prayers that kept me going, Mother. Every sleepless night in the forest, every moment of weakness—I always felt your strength around me.”

Sumitra smiled gently and brushed back his hair. “Even as a child, you never slept unless your brother was safe. That was your nature.”

Her eyes then turned toward Urmila. “And you, dear one—you have been stronger than anyone. While he was away, you bore the silence here. You lived those years alone, yet never complained. I know how much that cost you.”

Urmila bowed her head with humility. “It was my duty, Mother. His vow was mine too. He kept his watch in the forest, and I kept mine here in Ayodhya.”

For a while, none of them spoke. The silence between them wasn’t heavy—it was full of everything they didn’t need to say aloud.

Then Sumitra let out a playful sigh and rubbed her back with mock weariness. She asked her daughter in law to sit beside her and she obeyed sitting next to her. She continued. “But tell me, children—it’s been a whole year since Ram’s coronation. Do you not think this old mother deserves the laughter of little ones by now? These palace halls are far too quiet without grandchildren.”

Lakshman froze, blushing, while Urmila looked down with a shy smile, her cheeks turning pink.

“Mother…” Lakshman said awkwardly. “Is it?... —”

Sumitra laughed warmly. “Why not? I gave my sons to the forest, to dharma, to battles. Am I not allowed to ask for something for myself now?”

Urmila glanced up, her eyes shining, and said gently, “If it is the Lord’s will, soon your courtyard will echo with small footsteps. But first, let him learn to sleep, Mother—before he learns to put a child to sleep.”

They all laughed together, the sound filling the chamber with warmth. Lakshman reached for both their hands and held them tightly. “If this house is to be filled with joy, it will be because of you both—Mother, for giving me life, and Urmila, for giving it meaning.”

Sumitra’s eyes filled with tears, but her smile never wavered. “Then let it be so,” she whispered. “May Ayodhya’s peace be crowned not just with duty, but with laughter and new life. After exile, let there finally be joy.”

And in that quiet hall, with the lamps flickering around them, the three of them dreamed of brighter days to come.
