See initially the whole challenge was going to be this way- individual rather than team. But it was deliberately made into a team challenge so that slow and fast readers can get paired up. Otherwise the same people would win all the time which would take all the fun away and defeat the purpose - which is to motivate people into reading more.

Looks like you've considered all possibilities before coming up with this idea. I hope the reading challenge is a success! Maybe you can differentiate between 'participant,' 'crossed pages' (or create a name for it), and 'most pages read' while awarding badges.
