For many years, there are 5 players who were known as the strong foundation of Bangladesh Cricket.
One as everyone knows Shakib Al Hasan the megastar of Bangladesh Cricket, his career came to an abrupt end due to joining politics and after a year that party is in waters.
Mashrafe retired long back after the 2019 ODI WC, and Tamim retired last year. Only Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah were left.
Now they both retired after their disaster performance at this year’s Champions Trophy.
Mushfiqur Rahim was struggling for quite some time. After scoring a massive 191 in a test vs Pakistan, he has not performed well anymore. And failed badly in both matches he played this Champions Trophy. He made the right call to retire. Btw Mushy has not retired from Tests yet. His fitness is good enough to get him going in Tests for 2-3 years more depending on his performance there.
Mahmudullah who was expected to retire before Shakib-Tamim-Mushy was surprising the last one to retire in ODIs. Unlike Mushy, Mahmudullah was actually in good form and scored 4 50s in a row in ODIs. But unfortunately he failed in the only match he played vs CT(did not play vs India). Even if he was scoring runs his fitness was a huge concern and his fielding standards dropped a lot and the team needs someone with a youngster energy. So his call to retire wasn’t wrong either.
But I am really worried about the current Bangladesh ODI side. Yeah they were never a good team, but with now all the seniors gone it’s gonna be tougher. The seniors had to retire one day anyway. No one really took over their responsibilities well like Soumya Sarkar said, maybe Shanto and Miraz somewhat took some responsibilities but not as good as the seniors did.
Miraz did not really perform in ICC tournaments so he is far from near to be Shakib’s replacement(only in Test somewhat)
Litton is good in other formats but terrible in this format. The pace attack is decent but I have no hopes with their batting. Spin attack apart from Rishad declined a lot from past. Some youngsters like Hridoy, Tanzid yes they can perform but their consistency isn’t very promising either.
If some players don’t take responsibility well, Bangladesh will even struggle to qualify in the upcoming World Cups.
