Over the years, he shifted his focus on Test cricket and became one of the world’s best. In 106 Test matches, the wily spinner picked up 537 Test wickets, averaging 24, including 37 five-wicket hauls. He is also the second highest wicket-takers for India in Tests, and is just behind Anil Kumble, who had 619 Test scalps.

Interestingly, Ashwin had communicated his retirement to the team management before the Test series Vs Australia. Still, Rohit Sharma, the India skipper convinced the spinner to play the Pink-Ball Test match.

'I don't want to make it about myself. This is my last day as an international cricketer. I have created a lot of memories. We are the last bunch of OGs in the dressing room. Lot of people to thank, BCCI, my fellow teammates, all the coaches,' Ashwin said,

Ohh interesting! Wish he stretched it to atleast this series.. especially because in the next matches, spinners may find help and mayb two spinners may be needed then...may both ash n jadu cud have played n nitish out..so its disappointing..

That way he wud have been given proper farewell match too as rohit wud have known in advance its his last match hence wud have done something to make him feel special.

Rohit already knew, for him he played this series.

He was probably told he wouldn't get a chance in further series and that they may play Sundar instead of him, so he thought to leave.

If they actually wanted him to make something special for him, they should have done it in the last match when he played.

Also, Nitish shouldn't be out, he is the only one performing and doing his job.

He knew its his last series but cant say about last match...if he hadn't announced retirement in the middle, he may have got a chance in some further match in this series...

No, if Rohit said he would be given a chance in further series he won't have retired.

Also, Rohit himself said bcoz he asked Ashwin to play the last test otherwise he was gonna retire before.

It would have been made clear that he won't get a chance further in the series, so retired.

To give benefit of the doubt to everyone, let us say, Ash was asked to be a part of the team only to play in the Pink ball match and nothing else.

For that reason, he could not retire at the end of the first match, even though India won that match.

Had India won the Adelaide match or at least drew the match, most probably Ash would have made the announcement and retired at the end of Adelaide match. India lost the match and to be fair, no one would want to retire on a losing note. So, he neither made the announcement nor retired.

Now that they have managed to draw Brisbane test with the help of rain and no one knows what is going to happen in the next two matches, Ash has decided to retire.

I won't blame anybody for this decision and for the timing.

Ash has done a great job for his country and all the best to him in whatever he does in the future.

Cheers..
