So Ani then firmly believes consent is over rituals, which is why he never accepted Runak wedding and kept calling it fake. But he wanted J to consent to it, so they could make it real.

And she never consented.

Since he had already made promises to Arshi long ago breaking it seems to him he will be like Brij, where he will be dumping Arshi like Brij did Urvasi.

Dont take this thought any further - there are holes in this...but this is what struck me and made me feel a little respect for Ani.

How J's consent would have invalidated his promise to Arshi - I dont know, but when I heard this comment, my first thought was he is defending his relationship with Arshi with that comment as well.

After he started to feel differently about her he was in indirect ways seeking from Jhanak to know if she had any feelings towards him other than gratitude. In the beginning Jhanak was probably only all about the gratitude and so her answers were truly about that but later when her own feelings changed and she realised the gravity of her situation, she used to purposely talk about only feelings of gratitude etc and especially when she cottoned on to Ani’s changed feelings towards her. She didn’t want to encourage the new status.

About the comparison with Brij, I don’t think it would be fair. In my view, while Ani did confuse Jhanak in those delirium induced moments but their relationship wasn’t meant for take off at that stage. Jhanak wouldn’t have accepted a new status and frankly I don’t blame her for it given her past. I have pondered on the question of Ani making a clean break with Arshi and rekindling the relationship with J as a way out of this conundrum where the shadow of didi isn’t over them and what would be the circumstances for it. Well, now I am not sure it matters anymore. I always thought Jhanak would reach a stage when she will be able to understand the nuances in their relationship and help liberate herself from her thoughts of worthlessness etc. As for Ani…. Ab chodo I don’t know anymore where he stands. The narrative is too muddled for me to take a definitive position.
