Shreyas Iyer | KKR skipper: I think I manifested this before the game. Nerves were there, boys have been raising their hands and there have been many game-changers and kudos to each and every one of them. I feel whichever team plays the best, they got a great chance to win. They were going at great guns in the first 6 overs, and to bounce back from that situation it was nice to see. I wasn't thinking about stats or records, the weather wasn't great but we won the game and that's what is more important. It's all about understanding which bowler is doing well on that particular day, I feel both of them bowled well and my gut went with Varun (on bowling the 4th over) at that point and I backed him.
Mumbai Indians started off really well. In fact, at one point, they were motoring along. At the end of the 5-over powerplay, MI seemed to have everything under control. They were 59/0. Ishan Kishan was scoring at 2 runs per ball and the run rate gave a better reading than the required run rate.
But then, Varun Chakravarthy was summoned. He spun a web around that MI middle order and brought his team back in the contest. He had an able partner in Sunil Narine to support him from the other end. However, it seemed as if MI would still be able to somehow bat through those 7 overs of spin and attack the pacers later on.
Andre Russell had other plans, however. He bowled an excellent spell of 3 overs where he asked questions off every other delivery he sent down. Cameos by Tilak Varma and Naman Dhir, did ignite some hopes for Mumbai towards the end but they looked far from sealing the deal.
In the end, KKR have powered through brilliantly to cinch themselves a place in the playoffs, with a NRR that might very well place them in the top two.
Hardik Pandya (Mumbai Indians captain): Tough one, yes. As a batting unit, the foundation was quite there, post that we couldn't quite capitalise and build the momentum and that costed us, the wicket was a bit tacky. It was par, given the conditions, I felt the bowlers did well, kept a check on the run flow but eventually it looked like a winning total. Nothing to be very honest, just go out there and enjoy, I don't think we've played enough good cricket this season.
Varun Chakaravarthy | Player of the Match: The plan was to make him (Rohit) hit across the line, obviously there was help from the wicket and I was able to use it to my advantage. Tactically we (talking about Narine) are similar, but technically we are slightly different. The wickets were too flat initially, my bowling has been same from the first match and it is just that the results are showing up now.
KKR are through. They win by 18 runs and remain on 18 points with 2 (away) games to go. As for MI, they will play LSG at home next week and would hope to end the season on a high. In action from a few hours from now will be 4 teams that are well and truly in contention for the playoffs. It also marks the penultimate double-header clash of the season.
