Okay, long time overdue review for the past 3 episodes- Part 1. Covering the Basus dinner scene of ep 152 and yesterday's episode ep 153.

Will write on RuNak relationship progression in part 2 if people still want to read it. So those who want to read about them may not find anything in here. Let me know if so!

To start with, contrary to majority of people's opinions, I actually quite enjoyed the time away from RuNak.

The theme I found in these couple of scenes:

What is Family? A bunch of blood related people living together on a utilitarian basis or a bunch of unrelated people coming together as a unit because of their similar nature and the care and concern they develop for each other?

Both, I guess.

The Basu joint family is a sad but realistic reflection of how Indian Joint family is in today's world. I found it very likeable that they expanded upon Tammi and Tammo particularly. They are a reflection of today's grandparents who are dependent upon their old sons who have their own family, each a typical representation of the characteristics of the Elder, Middle and Younger sibling in a family.

"Bahu, tum ek nakaam beta ka baab hone ka dard tum nahi samjhogi. Kabhi kabhi kush ho jati hoon mere kamiyaab beta aur potho pothiyon le liye, par jab log yaad dilate ki meri ek beta bhi na kamiyaab ho, uss kushi ek paal mein chin jaati hai... kaise halla machaun?"

"Koshish to kabse kar rahe ho chotton, Ab tum kuch karke dikhao beta.... taaki hum tari wajah se tane na sunne pade..."

These two dialogues perfectly encapsulate Tammi and Tammo in a nutshell, Parents from a generation where communal life and tradition is considered the norm and requirement. To upkeep that standard, they ended up making bad decision alienating their first and second born, feeling unhappy that their youngest did not satisfy their standards. And these standards that are essentially a societal construct.

"Har kisi ki kaamiyaab ek jiase to nahi milte na"

True, but in a survivalist society people are still forced to value things that are the most efficient in ensuring survival. Kind of ironic of Tammi to say this since she immediately contradicts herself by asking Chotton to do something, so they don't have to hear the taunts. I don't understand what it is with parents that they are not willing to own the consequences of their decision. Things happen, they have to accept the fact that some decision will lead to benefits for some people while losses to others. That's what life is.

LIFE IS UNFAIR. WORLD IS UNFAIR.

They made their elder son sacrifice his youth and studies so that the second born could flourish and left too much leeway for their youngest who is now neither a patient, hard worker like his eldest brother, nor a successful, smart and ambitious man like his second brother. Again, expectations placed on all three of their children at different stages of life leading to resentments between them and their children. All because of their hubris for Bose Family Prestige and their insistence on maintaining an almost acrimonious sibling bond all because they could not face the fact their children were not as they expected. And reacting in helplessness and denial to that.

Now coming to the siblings and the impact their family dynamics have on them.

Babloo Bose - The eldest people- pleasing son who sacrificed all for his younger siblings, half on their parent's insistence and half through his own willingness. As a result, his own family is now languishing, his son resentful that his father is not successful like his uncle; his wife in tune with him and a medically unwell daughter whom he cannot get treated with a resentful mother of his children. Forced to live with his siblings due to a promise made to please his parents and the utilitarian value of it.

Shubo Bose - The middle-neglected son, forced to shoulder the financial burden after his career is a success in exchanged for the favors, he received for such a success. Partly his temperament and resentment are a result of his perception that his family members value him for his money-making abilities, clearly evident from how his wife speaks to the rest of the family members. Hence all the more reason for him and his wife to concentrate on their eldest son as they feel no one is their own despite having such a huge family within his home.

Rupi Bose/Chotton - The youngest sibling of the Basus, who grew up young and carefree because his elder siblings took care of the family burden, leaving him to his devices and the last hope for his parents evident from his content demeanor and his parent's expectations for him to be better than who he is. Still a child at heart, somewhat idealistic and naive in nature despite repeated humiliations and insults thrown his way. He needs firmer hands inferred from his father's perception about him, and Mrinalini will be the right partner who will bring him to his fullest potential, true to her nature as an educator.

On the other side, we see Jhanak -Appu. A pair of people who became family purely because of the care and concern they developed for each other. For a Jhanak who is left alone in this world by her weak mother and a spiteful and petty maternal family, Appu a child-like woman due to health issues has become her family in an unlikely set of circumstances. The way they care for each other is a sight to behold, like the rare rain in a world of drought. Not many people are lucky enough to get to have bonds like that in their life. This is in quite the contrast of Appu own bond with her brother's wife, who never leaves a chance to vilify her.

So, what is family??

Sorry for a philosophical take on things, I just want to understand and know different opinions from the ones I hold regarding the standard and definition of family.

Beautiful write up on Bose brothers.. As someone posted the other day on the forum, I think the day we stop measuring success in terms of money made rather measure it by the values a person holds, families will start looking better..
