I don't know about outside India but everybody had to watch Kahaani in theatre. I remember it especially since it was the first movie I watched after leaving for college. Our friend group actually saved money to watch Kahaani in theatre. EV really good film but nobody was rushing to watch it in cinema halls. Maybe it's just my experience, though🤷

I don't live in India so I can't say. Based on my experience, Vidya's never been all that popular overseas (the Yash Raj/Dharma actors are most popular in the US) whereas Sridevi was still very beloved and English Vinglish especially was something that NRIs could relate to so the two-hit combo of her return to the screen after more than a decade plus the subject matter made it a winning hit.

And I'm checking the box office stats for overseas and EV was #8 in overseas rankings whereas Kahaani was #16. Barfi was #7 btw as Priyanka's performance for that has come up a lot as well in this thread (another movie my non-Bollywood friends have seen).

In comparison to Indian box office alone, Kahaani was #13 and EV was #20. So the difference perspectives probably comes from Kahaani being more popular in India and EV being more popular in the US.

Same with Mom. That one scene where she sees her daughter in the hospital for the first time is better than most people’s careers. She was robbed again. What a moment that could’ve been…. She would’ve been the eldest winner of the BA award. How sad the industry never gave her due for Mom or EV.

Now I am afraid the same thing will happen to Rani Mukerjee, who clearly deserves to win for Mrs Chatterjee but we all know whose going to win again…

That's not the case with me. Nothing sticks out from Kahaani to me except Vidya's performance and the cinematography. I found the story a bit too convoluted. But her act in Kahaani is one of my most favorites from the entirety of Bollywood, maybe after Tabu in Haider/Maqbool and Manisha in Dil Se. But Vidya's performance was a lot more subtle and subdued, and not as overt and emotional as Sridevi, so I can see why people would prefer the latter. Vidya's acting didn't really give her the scope to portray overt emotional scenes, and she had to keep a very detached/tough look, so I can see why people may not feel like it's that great a performance.

Vidya didn't deserve the award for Paa -- Kareena in Kurbaan and PC in Kaminey were better. But for Kahaani I will give it to her.

I hope people don't think I am putting down Sri. Granted I haven't seen much of her, but what little I saw she seems like a fantastic actress, and much more versatile than Vidya (Vidya can't do comedy or OTT/flowerpot roles that Sri can do with ease). Sri was fantastic in Mom and deserved the award there. But... I just found Vidya better in Kahaani.

Rani was always FF's favorite so I think this year she will win.

Ironically enough, they still couldn't bother to give her two separate awards for each movie. They only gave her one award combined for both of them...how cheap.

The fact that Sridevi only had two competitive Filmfare Awards (Chaalbaaz and Lamhe) while Alia already has four (and I'm not jinxing this by saying if she'll get another one very soon or not) is a travesty.

Rani is the most deserving and I'm still angry she lost for Hichki against You-Know-Aloo. If history repeats itself again, I will be irate.

FF award isn't the barometer for acting, is it? Kajol and SRK are the greatest actress out there if you go by FF wins.

Nutan and Dilip Kumar are also tied with Kajol and SRK.

FF's second favorite after Kajol. I still think Rani should have won for KANK over Kajol in Fanaa although Kajol's performance was a very close second. My favorite of her non SRK films.

^ not a fan of Rani's perf in KANK -- found both the film and her act to be overwrought.. I much preferred Kajol for Fanaa, which I think is one of her more deserving wins. But her win for K3G was laughable, and MNIK is the worst I think.

I think KANK should have swept all the acting rewards. SRK instead of Hrithik for Dhoom 2, Rani instead of Kajol, and Preity instead of Konkona. Only Abhishek won an acting award for KANK. The movie was too ahead of its time though, especially in India. Very similar to the reception Silsila got except Silsila was an outright flop in India, only doing well overseas.

Kajol's main competition for K3G would have been Amisha Patel in Gadar since Gadar was the highest grossing film in India and the second highest grossing worldwide after K3G that year. Amisha's lack of a win is why Filmfare gave her the special Filmfare Award so if Kajol hadn't won, most likely Amisha would have won.

As for Kajol's main competition against MNIK, Aishwarya for Guzaarish would have been the most likely winner except that film was a flop. The only other likely winner was Vidya for Ishqiya but if she had won for that, she would have won 4 times in a row.

Dont Forget Rani is Mrs Yash Raj Films now. so if awards are bought, she has more capacity to buy them then Alia and her dharma dad. Anyway she deserves it this year by a mile. Even Kiara in Satyaprem.. was better than Alia in RARKPK. Going for the following awards:

Best Film: 12th Fail

Best Director: Vinod Chopra 12th Fail

Best Actor: Ranbir Kapoor (Animal) or Vikrant Massey (12th Fail)

Best Actress: Rani Mukerjee (Chatterjee vs Norway) or Kiara Advani (SPKK)

Best Supporting Actor: Vicky Kaushal (Dunki) or Tota Roy Chowdhury (RARKPK)

Best Supporting Actress: Dimple Kapadia (Tu Jhooti Main Makkar)

Best Music Director: AR Rahman (Pippa) or Animal (Multiple composers)

Best Background Score: Animal

Best Playback Singer Male : Bhupinder Babbal (Arjan Velly - Animal) or Sonu Nigam (Ro Lain De- RARKPK/ Papa Meri Jaan- Animal) [[[ Arijit does not deserve it this year but will probably win it for Ve Kamleya)]]]

Best Playback Singer Female: Shreya Ghoshal (Vaishnav Jan to - Gandhi Godse) or Shilpa Rao (Chaleya-Jawan). Personally Shreya should win for Gandhi Godse. Its an insanely beautiful rendition. Cant stop listening to it.

Actor in a Negative Role: Jaya Bachchan or Bobby Deol or Vijay Sethupati

Best Choreography: Dhindora Baaje Re (RARKPK)

Rani is one of six women to win the award back to back. She knows how to play the game 🎲
