"Whoever has got the chance, they have contributed. I know that big scores have not been scored, hundreds have not been scored apart from Virat and Rohit. But that is the challenge for the other guys. Shubman has scored a fifty, Shreyas has scored a fifty, I have been batting well. When Jadeja got the chance in the last match, he also finished the match. So, every player has a different role. And they are playing their role and responsibility well. The team is winning, so we are not really worried. Whenever anyone gets a chance, I'm sure they'll put their hands up."
KL Rahul isn't worried about the lack of hundreds from the middle order
"We were desperate to come here and try and win back-to-back 50 over competitions. We're still very much focused on all formats of the game."
England assistant coach Marcus Trescothick plays down the idea that England have lost interest in ODIs
Who cares about hundreds when there are plenty of match winning 50s ...Theres no point in piling up records after records and not helping the team win.. shreyas needs to be consistent though
Hello and welcome to match 29 of the 2023 ODI World Cup. It's hosts India taking on defending champions England. It was supposed to be one of the most anticipated games of the tournament with both teams among the pre-tournament favourites. But who would have imagined that by the time this game would arrive England would be lurking at the bottom of the table? I am Hemant Brar and will soon be joined by Andrew Miller as we bring you all the action from Lucknow.
England have tried everything they could. They have tried all 15 members of their original squad, they have tried to play carefree cricket, and they even left out their vice-captain, Moeen Ali, in three out of five games to make things work. Four defeats out of five matches so far scream that none of that worked. "I've never come across a sports team that has underperformed like this England team, given the level of expectation that is on their shoulders," their former captain Eoin Morgan said.
But such is the format of this World Cup that they can still make it to the semi-finals. But for that to materialise, the whole universe needs to work towards it, but do England themselves want it that badly? We are still quite some time away from the toss, so why not take a look at our preview in the meantime?
For India, meanwhile, almost everything has clicked. They, too, have used all 15 players in their squad, but those choices were either forced because of the unavailability of a player or were a tactical move. Ishan Kishan played a couple of games at the start of the tournament when Shubman Gill was recovering from a bout of dengue, India played R Ashwin on a spinning track in Chennai, and Suryakumar Yadav and Mohammed Shami got a chance in the last game with Hardik Pandya injured. Talking of Hardik, he is unavailable for this game as well with a ligament damage.
Matt Roller is at the venue, and he reports: "Warm day in Lucknow, 31 degrees per my phone. Not much breeze. Chaos on the roads outside as you would expect, stadium relatively quiet but slowly filling up. Livingstone and Moeen both in the middle doing visualisation. Suggests a similar England XI."
Thank you, Raji, for the thread and for tagging me.
In India's last game, Daryl Mitchell took apart Kuldeep in the spinner's first five overs, in which he went for 48. But he came back strongly, giving away only 25 in his next five and picking up two wickets. As Kuldeep gets ready to face England, life has come a full circle for him. Four years ago, at the 2019 World Cup, it was the England game where he was ransacked for 72 in his ten overs. It started a downward spiral with Kuldeep finding himself out of the Indian team. The mystery of the left-arm wristspin was unravelled. But he went back, worked on the basics, and returned as an improved, more complete bowler. Andrew Fidel Fernando has got more on that here.
rajith: "india should stick with same eleven , shami just like bumrah does not need much help from surface so he will be much more effective than aswin "

1pm Let's move to Virat Kohli now. From a brash young upstart, he has turned into a legend of the game - in a manner decidedly different from the man whose heir he is, Sachin Tendulkar. Now he stands at 48 ODI hundreds, one short of Tendulkar's record. Many believe he is a better ODI batter than even Tendulkar. One can present arguments both in favour and against of that statement but what cannot be denied is Kohli is different from Tendulkar. Fidel has written a beautiful piece on that in his own inimitable way. Do read here.
Neal: "I would like to see Brook for Bairstow, Curran for Ali, Atkinson for Wood and for England to give a performance worthy of former champions. Not much, then!"
Hassan Imtiaz: "Never take England for granted, they have nothing to lose so they will play free handedly for sure.Siraj will bounce back in today's game and hoping for Kohli's 49th ton."
