Culturally they have come to value tests (and maybe T20s) waaay more than ODIs. Even if Pat's numbers are not that great in ODIs, he is still a generational player, and they don't have anyone adequate to replace him in their first class circuit. Changing the captain mid tournament would be so demoralising and it'd very very bad PR for Smith to begin with.
