@ op - i agree with everything you have said. of course sex workers deserve to live with respect and dignity and there should be regulations to protect them.

i only want to add onto this point. i'd like for us as a society to get to a point where we can provide women with education, opportunities, safety nets, and anything else that's needed for them to not get to a point where they feel the need to pick it as a profession. there's a difference between picking it because you want to do it (which is perfectly fine) vs picking it because you have no other way to make money, and i don't think anyone should have to pick it because they have no other way to survive.

Indeed. Our society puts the baggage of modesty and shame on women's head.

Do I agree that we live in a misogynist world… sad . But true….

However, I think your comment implies only women are in this profession….which isnt true…. 😆.. yeah movie dekh lena waisey… :) .. it’s a cult classic :)

And the answer to your debate topic is obvious… this is the oldest profession and yet carries a taboo…. And that taboo has resulted in all the issues with it.. worst of it being human trafficking (a closely related evil)…

Since govt only cares about revenues (sadly).. someone should tell them they could impose taxes on this industry as well.. and that might get the ball rolling…… Carrot almost always works..

I know it's not only women, but in India, male prostitution is completely illegal. And society doesn't really care what work "men" do.

It is amusing how even after 2 decades of 21st century things that should be normalised aren't. And if the current generation tried to do it, we're called "immoral" and besharam

I do believe society does care what work “men” do even tho there is gender discrimination (even sports at highest level hasn’t solved this problem and thats just sad)… ….

I have often seen this profession (and its associated problems) only focus on women (as you said male prostitution is completely illegal in India).. and in some ways, I think it denigrates women even more…..

And why stick to 2 decades of 21st century… since this is the oldest profession, this one should have been solved a long long time ago…😆

I agree with jasoos bhai male prostitution is also not accepted in society. There are two types of people in society one who demeans women and others who demean men(they can be less than the first category but they do exist in a good number). The same people would tolerate infidelity in their household but they can't tolerate prostitutes who just do their work and don't harm anyone. And worst thing is many of them even mistreat those who are forced into prostitution which is inhuman of highest order🤢

the problem with Indian laws is, it isn't illegal if done privately. Organised crime is illegal.

Society, on the other hand, treats them as they don't exist. And Bollywood treats them as someone exotic. There's no middle line. Amar Prem was one of the rare movies that did a good job with the portrayal.

True. And what's worse is that the same society that treats them as garbage is full of people that use them and abuse them.

I've been taught not to look down on any profession and I have grown up with the same ideology. Work is work. No one has the right to judge anyone based on it.

Aren't we all working for the same reason? To survive? So how can we blame them for what they do? It's quite easy to look down on them when someone isn't in the same situation as them. They weren't provide with the same resources as we were. So no, we do not get to question their morals coming from a privileged place.

No matter what, any money that isn't earned by cheating, blackmailing or killing someone is honest money.

well said Ames. We all work to live a good life. It is unfortunate that society doesn't treat all the work as same.

Funny how the only who cleans the street is ridiculed but not those who pollute/dirty it.

I'm going to be honest about my prejudices. I think that whether a married/committed person sneaks off to a paramour or to a sex worker, that's deceitful adultery, similar to pollution of marriage/family. The spouse/partner who thinks the marriage/relationship is monogamous is being violated every time the married/committed couple has sex with one partner withholding information that would affect the other partner's consent and use of protection. An innocent person can get STDs or lice from a partner going to a sex worker, and regulations don't mean zero risk.

It is entirely the married person's fault, but someone who participates in deceit is not blameless. I don't think "sex work is my job" or "I don't ask if my sexual partners are married" are excuses.

I understand that sex work can benefit a client's self-esteem. It doesn't have to be exploitative or deceitful or unhealthy. I want sex work to be legal and regulated and sex workers to be protected and healthy, but I don't have to call sex work respectable.

I am in favour of public health and personal accountability, that's all.
