It is a very good point. To some extent, it is same as chosen one failing to do what we expected him to do.

I am just thinking out loud here.

If a top order batsman fails to make runs and gets out, the team can replace him with an all rounder, who will bat in that innings and also can contribute during bowling.

If a specialist bowler fails to take wickets, the team can replace him with an all rounder and will use him to bowl and bat as they need.

Of course, there is no guarantee that the impact player will make an impact.😊

Looking at this scenario, I have a suggestion.

Vijay, is it possible to add "Impact Player (Team X)" and "Impact Player (Team Y)", instead of a name, in the drop down list of players in Best bowling, Best batting and Man of the match categories? Members will get to pick players out of 24 instead of original 22.

Cheers..

However I am keeping this suggestion of yours open and we may include later.

For the moment let's start small and expand later.

Just a suggestion that I think we can include this Sixes question .This adds a great wild card element. Its also a source of comedy for members. 😆 Anyone can hit max sixes. Even a no 10/11 bowlers at times.😆 Also this category has many winners at times so more chances of points.

If the questions are getting too much, you can replace the Extras one because i dont see it as important tbh.

@Orange : If a batsman gets out and then replaced, the replacement wont be able to bat. Thats how this works. I have seen it working in Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy (Audition for IPL Trophy) where this rule was tested in real time.

@Purple: Same as batting, if a bowler has completed 4 overs, the replacement wont be able to bowl.

The idea id to replace a player to do things he has left behind, not add an Extra player.

Only in a special case of concussion substitute , there can be 12 batters since the player is removed ASAP and he hasnt been declared out.

@Bold : Agree with this, Rather than picking a particular player out of 15 as impact, just write Impact player, if that impact player wins in any category, then the member gets points, else no points.

The way I understood, the impact player is replacing a player not his speciality, otherwise the highlighted sentences won't make sense.

As per the rule,

The Impact Player will be allowed to bowl a maximum of four overs (in a complete, non-shortened game) irrespective of what stage he enters the game. To simplify, if the fielding side introduces the Impact Player in the 12th over, he will still be allowed to bowl four overs.

On the other hand, if the batting side introduces the Impact Player, he can bat at any position while making sure that only 11 players get to bat.

Edited to add:

The Impact Player can be introduced at any of the following stages:

  1. Before the start of the innings
  2. After an over finishes
  3. At the fall of a wicket or if a batter retires

Infact, the impact player is not allowed to complete an over if a bowler gets hurt mid over.

It replaced a specialty in SMAT. but looks like they have adjusted rules for IPL.

Anyways, Wisden is not a proper source on Indian Cricket. Always use official ipl site or Cricinfo .

https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/ipl-2023-impact-player-all-you-need-to-know-about-the-new-rule-1350616

So essentially if the impact player bats, then someone else wont bat.

same in bowling, if impact player bowls his 4, then someone else will miss out on bowling.

Impact Player has to be Indian

The Impact Player has to be an Indian player unless the starting XI contains less than four overseas players in the first place. This is done to ensure that no team gets to use more than four overseas players during a game. In case any team has named a starting XI with three or fewer overseas players, they will be allowed to field another overseas player as an Impact player.

How does the Impact Player rule work?

Teams will have to name five substitutes while naming their starting XI. They will be allowed to replace one player from their starting XI with one of those five substitutes at any point during the match, albeit with some constraints.

When can the Impact Player be introduced?

The Impact Player can be introduced at any of the following stages:

  1. Before the start of the innings
  2. After an over finishes
  3. At the fall of a wicket or if a batter retires

In case the fielding side introduces the Impact Player mid-over, which can happen in scenario ‘3’ stated above, the Impact Player won’t be allowed to bowl the remaining balls of the ongoing over.

If a player from the fielding side gets injured mid-over and is replaced by the Impact Player, he won’t be allowed to bowl the remaining balls of the ongoing over in that case either.

What role can the Impact Player play in the game?

The Impact Player will be allowed to bowl a maximum of four overs (in a complete, non-shortened game) irrespective of what stage he enters the game. To simplify, if the fielding side introduces the Impact Player in the 12th over, he will still be allowed to bowl four overs.

On the other hand, if the batting side introduces the Impact Player, he can bat at any position while making sure that only 11 players get to bat.

What role can the player who is replaced play in the game?

The player who has been replaced can take no further part in the game, and won’t be allowed to come on as a substitute fielder as well.

How will the Impact Player be introduced?

The captain will have to inform the on field umpires about the introduction of the Impact Player, and the umpire will make a signal by crossing his hands above his head, signifying that the Impact Player has been introduced.

IPL has also announced that captains can name the playing XI after the toss. Coupled with this rule, the Impact Player rule is bound to induce a lot of interesting tactical decisions in IPL 2023.

Don't worry about the impact of this newly introduced impact players😊. They will be a part of game, and after 2/3 matches, we'll be able to understand more about this. 👍🏼

Let's have fun and be engaged while watching the games.

So you are proposing that we add:

a) Guess the Player who will hit most number of 6s

OR

b) Guess the total number of 6s in the match?

Well in the drop down you will see the whole Squad whether they were in the Playing XI or not.
