I remember Hema looking perfect fit in queen roles in Meerabai and Razia Sultan and also as a tamasha dikhane wali performing on roads in Seeta aur Geeta and pick pocket in Amir Garib.
Amitabh looked equally convincing in Sharaabi as a rich brat and in Suhaag as a roadside tapori and bootlegger.
Actors of past never used fake brown face to look poor or street urchins either.
Why since last few decades we have stratified actors for each role and some actors always do period films, some always do glam roles and some usually do middle class roles and some always do villager roles?
Where are all rounders like past? Do actors lack ability to fit all characters or do makers typecast them and choose one type of actor for one type of role? Also why do actors since 90s mostly do rich or urban or middle class characters and hardly play poor guys living in slums or villages or footpath? I can never imagine Deepika or Ash play pick pocket and princess with equal ease as Hema and Rekha did in past. I do not think Deepika ever played a villager either. SRK was also usually not convincing in villager roles if he ever attempted one and his period films usually flopped. I thought Saif and Kareena were total misfits in new ad where they are supposed to play driver and maid. Kareena never looked like domestic help at all and it looked like kids playing dress up.
I am fed up how usually Bhumi, Ayushmann, Rajkumar play middle class roles and Pankaj and Nawaz do rural or semi urban or urban poor roles. Why this typecasting?
Is it fault of stars or makers or make up artistes who cannot give right fit in to every star for all sorts of roles?
