Someone said Oscar campaigns are like US presidential elections. The campaigns itself cost somewhat around 15 million dollars depending on the studio. You have to arrange screenings, luncheon, ads, mailers etc etc for voters. That's why most of the time big studios reap the benefit. It's not always about talent alone. Otherwise LaLa land, Bohemian Rhapsody or Rami Malek stood no chance. And yes AMPAS is biased towards some categories. It's very difficult for action or horror genre to get in.

I have seen situations like that in Delhi and Mumbai, where a maid would get in her husband as a driver, then her daughter as cook and so on. And the similar sort of class divide. It's a very Asian set up. I think the very concept of that sort of class divide is foreign to most westerners.

Caste is another thing that a lot of south East Asian countries have much simpler variants of. At core these countries are very similar to us.

I am not saying that class divide doesnt exist in India, it exists in deeper ways in places like gurgaon, noida etc and also in villages,

I am saying is the style of filmaking and the way it will play out in an asian city and the way they depict it is closer to western sensibility so more relatable

but if you translate it similarly to bombay it will not reflect the indian reality and become gehraiyaan like,

in fact I would say the closest is sir in hindi which actually is made in a western manner but shows indian class conflict, somehow it does not have the nativity or rawness of a titli, sairat or asuran

almost like satyajit ray movies full of bhadralok who could have been sitting in london or paris

if you want realistic depiction of the same story it will be more rooted and become say a titli, geeli pucchi type which will not be close to them as much as the asian depiction

I do agree that parasite was right place right time when they were questioning capitalism, the rising inequality and it hit them hard

it is also true for RRR, they are fed up of the marvel movies which are souless and this superhero anime combo with no woke emotions is novel for them

so bottomline some filmmakers and movies hit the chord, it doesnt mean the movie is the greatest or they accept all great movies from that region

Y no film industry guy win Oscar excpt AR Rahman.

Agree dat our movies hav songs but what's the harm in dem. Dats our own style to create escapist environment as a break frm seriousness.

But how many Filmfare Awards did La La Land win??

And Chinese films, Korean films??? How many???

We want Hollywood to be more "inclusive" - but why hasn't the biggest award show in India got a Filmfare Award For Best Foreign Film?? It could do wonders for all industries..

Even IIFA (International Indian Film Awards) has been going since 2000 (first one being held in London, UK) has completely missed this opportunity.. 🤓

Imagine... Rekhaji could be giving awards to And Lee, Scorsese and Beyoncé 😎

Just like how movies from other regions don't win at Filmfare. I know that filmfare started something called filmfare south for the four South movie industries..but thats not the point. Point is that they don't consider them in the main event!

Agree except for the Ray part. His movies were as native from a native gaze as it gets. Not just movies like Apu Trilogy or Ashanti Sanket which deals with village life, but his urban movies deal with very uniquely Bengali and Indian problems and settings. Nowhere can you say that the characters could be from London and Paris, except for maybe a few.

Take a shot anytime someone says class, you'll be drunk by the end of the video.

They tried this year with audience votes and it became a joke. Army of dead won Oscar fan favourite title. Even Camila Cabello s Cinderella was in top 5 I think.

But these sorts of mainstream Bollywood movies almost never seem to make it across the ocean.

They didn't send a film like tumbbad with amazing story and cinematography but sent gully boy which was a rip of another movie. What do you expect?

Also i feel the people in deciding panels don't care about winning an oscar. They are busy pleasing industry's powerful people
