(Tutorial Part-2)
Topic 6: OVERS (Continuation)
Q- How much time it takes to finish an over by the bowler?
•> A bowler can take about 3 to 6 minutes to finish an over. This largely depends on the type of bowler.
•> A fast bowler needs to have a longer run up. Thus, the time taken by a fast bowler to bowl an over is more than a spin bowler.
•> Some bowlers are known for finishing their overs much faster. For example,
🔹Pakistan’s Younis Khan, bowled of about 5.2 overs in 8 minutes including an over finished in just 35seconds, that was the fastest over in cricket history. However it was a domestic match.
🔹India’s Ravindra Jadeja is known to finish an over even within about 2 minutes.
Q- Which is the longest over in cricket history?
In international cricket, the longest over ever was bowled by Pakistan’s Mohammed Sami who bowled a whopping 17 balls in an over.

•> Ravi Shastri and Garfield Sobers have also managed to hit 6 sixes in an over. However, their achievement came in a List A cricket match and not an international cricket match.

•> However, if a bowler delivers one of more no-ball or a wide ball, there is a possibility to score more than 36 runs in an over.

Q- Can a bowler can bowl both spin and fast ball in an over?
•> It's legitimate to spin and deliver fastball in an over.
•> Also with Umpire's consent, the bowler can change hands to deliver the ball if he/ she wants.
Q- Can a bowler be changed in the middle of an over?
•> If a bowler is unable to bowl all the 6 deliveries of an over due to some injury or any other reasons, another bowler can finish the remaining deliveries.
•> But the new assigned bowler who has come to finish the over cannot be the one who has bowled the previous over. Furthermore, substitute players, such as the 12th man, can not be allowed to bowl the remaining over.
•> Before finishing the remaining deliveries, the substitute bowler need to inform the umpire about the arm and the side with which the bowler is going to bowl.
🔰 Maiden Over
•> An over in which bowler concedes 0 runs to the opponent team.
•> However, if a bowler concedes runs through wides or no-balls, but no run is scored the batsman, the over is not considered as a maiden over.

🔰 Superover
•> A Super Over in Cricket is a one-over playoff that takes place when the final scores are level at the end of an ODI or T20 match, in order to determine the winner of such a match.
Super Over is a method to break a tie to determine the winner. The teams play an extra over and whichever team scores the most runs wins the game. If the match again ends in a tie, then another Superover is played.
BB: Penalty Shoot out (Tie breaker) version of Cricket
Both the team will play 6 balls each and whoever scores more wins. They actually started it like a football where bowlers have to hit the stumps and the teams hitting most would win. But the ICC thought tie breaker in cricket should be cricket related. So they started using super over.

🔰 Death Overs/ Slog Overs
•> Death Overs, otherwise also known as Slog Overs, is a part of the cricket with a limited set of overs. These are the crucial overs towards the end of an innings. As the end of the innings approaches, the batsman tries to make the most of the remaining overs. They hit the balls aggressively to score faster.
•> In one-day cricket, Death overs are usually the last 10 overs of the match. While, in T20 cricket, the last 5 overs are the death overs.
🔰 Powerplay
•> Powerplay is the term given to a set of overs with special fielding rules during a limited overs cricket match.
•> There are no powerplay rules in a Test Match.
As per the latest powerplay rules indicated in the ICC Playing Handbook,
🔸Rules of Powerplay In ODI Matches
First 10 overs: In an uninterrupted 50 overs ODI match, the first 10 overs of the innings allows a maximum of 2 fielders outside the 30 yards circle.
From 11th to the 40th over: In overs 11 to 40 of the innings, maximum of 4 fielders are allowed outside the 30 yards circle.
Last 10 overs or overs 41 to 50: A maximum 5 fielders are allowed outside the 30 yards circle.
🔸Rules of Powerplay in T20 Matches
Overs 1 to 6: A maximum of 2 fielders are allowed outside the 30 yards circle.
During 6 to 20 overs: 5 fielders will be allowed to field outside the circle.
Also, the fielding side can keep 5 fielders maximum in the leg side through the entire match.
•> The powerplay rules may be amended in a rain-curtailed match.
•> The Powerplay rules for the World Cup are the same as they are for ODIs and the rules for IPL are the same as they are for T20 cricket.
•> A total of 3 powerplays now exist in an ODI match. All the 3 powerplays are a mandatory powerplay. No batting or bowling powerplay exist anymore.
•> The first powerplay is of 10 overs, the 2nd powerplay is of 30 overs and the 3rd powerplay is of 10 overs. Also, the requirement of minimum 2 fielders in catching positions in the first 10 overs has been removed.
