Hello guys,

I am extremely sorry that nowadays I take so long to update. This time I took around two long months. I went on a trip for about three weeks so it took a bit longer.
But anyway, I am here with the new chapter. Really hope you will enjoy it.

This chapter is dedicated to LunRat as many of you love them. It’s a mix of angst, sadness, cruelness, love and understanding…

I will try to update faster for the next one. Till then enjoy this one.

And please don’t pay attention to the grammatical errors.
Nowadays I hardly get time to update so forget about proofreading. 🤣

The mission didn’t go the way they had planned it. To save some of the team members including Luna, the entire team had to back off. Back to the military camp, after a conversation with the soldiers, Colonel Marcello D’Costa went to see his daughter. She was pissed for being one of the people for whom the mission couldn’t be successful.

« Was it worth it satisfying your ego by risking your life ? », Marcello questioned his daughter. « I didn’t want to tell you but you are smart enough to understand that the way you blackmailed me to add you and your team in the mission was pathetic. You always portrayed me as the monster but don’t you think you are worse than me ? », he added.
« Spare me dad. », she replied angrily.

Marcello shook his head. He could be a heartless manipulative ass sometimes but never when it came to work nor family. In his opinion he was a little unfair with his family but never mistreated them. He couldn’t understand why his daughter hated him so much that she was ready to be the worst version of him. Soon after they were joined by Samrat. He was pretty mad at her for always risking her life but he controlled his anger in front the colonel.

« I think the media shouldn’t be allowed on this mission. It’s too dangerous for the civilians. », Samrat suggested to Marcello.
« Our job is risky so don’t give me that excuse. », Luna retorted angrily.
« Then find another f*cking risky mission. Stop being a problem to my ass. », Samrat lashed out.
Marcello chuckled, « I don’t know what’s going on between you two but I am out of this conversation. Samrat join me in my cabin after sorting out your issues. », he winked at Samrat.

Marcello left and the silence installed between the two friends.

« You are a confused person. I don’t even know if you are actually scared for my life or you just want to go against your father. », he said.
« What is your ass still doing here if you don’t want me around you ? », she asked with a sigh.
« Sorry for my rudeness. », he apologized. « Listen, always going against your father won’t make the things better. », he added to make her understand.
« I don’t ALWAYS go against him. I do only when he is doing wrong to me or to the people I love. », she replied.
« But you don’t love me so no need to go against him for me. », he said.
« I think you need to understand that not every love has the romantic angle. Love can be friendship too. », she shouted.
« Ok, forget about me. Why are you being unfair to your mother ? », he asked.
« What do you mean ? », she asked confused.
« You always blamed your father for his absence and his way of prioritizing his career over his family but don’t you think that you are an exact copy paste of your father ? », he asked.
« What’s wrong with you both ? Did you team up against me ? », she asked angrily.
« Truth always hurts. Your truth is that you are a hypocrite. You hate your father for the man he is but you are exactly like him. For months you disappear while your mother keeps worrying about you. Then you come back for a few days and she can’t even tell you that she is tired worrying about you. He ran behind career and you are doing the same. He is a little frugal when it comes to showing love to his loved ones but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t love you while you your commitment phobia keeps you away from your loved ones. Sorry to say but you are just like your father. Your hatred made you like him… maybe even worse. », he said.

The cold response from her made him roll his eyes. Once he left, she broke down into tears. Her fight with her father was her battle. He shouldn’t have lectured her on that. He shouldn’t have judged her nor push her on a guilt trip.

« I am not like my father. », she shouted with tears. « … or am I ? », she asked to herself.

Heartbroken, hurt and confused, she wrote a note and packed her bag. She informed her team that she was leaving by giving them the options to either pursue the mission or leave it. Both Samrat and her father were right. They are army men. They don’t fear for their lives just like her who isn’t afraid of dying in mission. Samrat went back to her room to check on her if she was fine after his harsh words but once there he found the place empty. His eyes fell on the envelop left on the desk. His name was written on it and even before opening it he was pretty sure it was a bad news.


Dear Sam,

You are most probably right on all the points you have said about me and that is why I think I have to end all this. Be it my mother or you, you both deserve peace. For now I will just focus on my career because that’s what I am good at and obviously very bad at maintaining relationships. I am sorry that you have fallen in love with the wrong girl.
You will always remain an important part of my life and I will miss you immensely.
Maybe one day we will meet again and share all our adventures but till then take care of yourself. And don’t forget to make your relationship better with Virat before it’s too late. I also hope that you will get freed from Patralekha and start afresh.

Samrat put the letter in his pocket and rushed outside. He hurriedly arrived to the airport and searched for her hoping that he wasn’t too late. She can’t leave him like this. He won’t let ten years of friendship go to waste. He found her walking towards the boarding gate. He called out her name loud and ran towards her.

« What are you doing Moon ? A f**cking letter ? You don’t have the guts to face me and say goodbye ? », he asked her.
« No. », she replied.
« You really want to leave everything behind. You really want to leave me ? A decade of friendship for god’s sake, Moon. », he asked holding her by the shoulders.
« It will be better for you if I stay away from you. », she replied.
« Moon, can you really stay away from me ? Because I can’t. », he said his tears ready to stream down his face.
« I have to go. Don’t force me to do something that I don’t want to. », she pleaded with him.

Taken aback by her words, « I… ok… go. », he released her with tears.

Surprisingly letting her go made her feel awkward. Her subconscious mind was aware that it was the end. She herself killed all the opportunities to be happy with a man who loved her crazily. His tears broke her hurt into pieces. This was one of the rare times she saw him cry. She could read the pain in his eyes. She never wanted to hurt him to this point. She embraced him in a tight hug before breaking it off. He cupped her face and placed a kiss on her forehead.

« All the best in your life. », he said.
« Take care. », she replied.

Both shared a smile filled with pain. She then turned her back and walked away. He stood there hopeless.

With welled up eyes, Luna was waiting for her flight. His touch felt so different for the first time. It was like if she got electrocuted. And his tears pierced her heart which was telling her to go back to him. She checked the screen which indicated that her flight was delayed for an hour. « Was this a sign ? », she asked to herself. « No, Luna. Don’t get weak. », she made herself understand.

« One hour delay. », the lady next to her exclaimed. « Journalist ? », she continued looking at her press reporter card.
Luna who had forgotten to take her ID card off, « Yes! », she further continued by the same, « Tourist?»
« Yes, for the second time in forty years. », the lady replied proudly. « Marie-Laure. », she extended her hand for a shake.
« Luna D’costa. », Luna shook her hand.

Marie-Laure was a sixty nine years old woman from France.

« What brought you back in India after forty years ? », Luna asked.
« My husband who died four months ago. », Marie-Laure replied.
« Oh I am so sorry. », Luna empathized.
« Don’t be. We had a great love life. », she replied with a big smile.
« Really ? That’s great. You have good memories to cherish forever then. », Luna remarked.
« Oh yes he changed my life… in good of course. », she said.
« You really did love him, didn’t you ? », Luna asked. « How did the love story start ? », she was too curious to know.
She laughed, « Forty years ago I was the main dancer of the Paradis Latin, the oldest cabaret of Paris. You know how a cabaret dancer is treated ? I was immensely loved. All the men were in love with me but their love was very objectifying. One night Richard, my husband, was among the spectators. I won’t go into details but somehow we fell in love. For me he was different than the rest of the men. He proposed me and I didn’t know what to say. It was so sudden and so different. When my friend got to know about it she said « Do you know who he is ? He is the son of a millionaire. You shouldn’t let him slip through your fingers. » I was shocked. He never mentioned about being a rich heir. I got mad and broke up with him. A week later we met again and in a very calm way he explained to me his entire story. Between a mother who was busy with her elite events and gatherings and a father who wanted to turn him into a business minded person, he chose to be independent on his own. He refused to be the heir. « Why should I tell you about something which I am not. », he told me. We patched up and got married. I thought he will change after some time like every other men but he still respected me and loved me like our first day. We made three beautiful children and opened our own restaurant. India was our honeymoon destination and we were supposed to come back on our fortieth anniversary but he died just a few months before. So I am here alone, reliving our moments. », she shared her story.
« You were lucky to have found the perfect man. », Luna said.
« I couldn’t pursue my studies after my father’s death. I had to earn money from a very young age. As a cabaret dancer I wasn’t destined to have a love life but Richard changed my destiny. He made me feel like a normal girl. He made me believe in love, in relationships, in humanity and in family. Without him I could have ended up with nothing but money and fame only. », Marie-Laure said.
« We usually crave for what we don’t have. You wanted a normal life and when you were given the opportunity you grabbed it. », Luna said.
« There is a saying. When life gives you lemon, make lemonade. », she replied with a smile.

Samrat was still at the airport. His legs were numb from all the emotions and needed to take a seat. He had to let go of the woman he loved for her happiness. He had to let go of his best friend. He tried to make himself accept that she won’t come back as she must have already boarded the flight. He couldn’t stop his tears remembering how unlucky he was in his personal life. He lost his father at a very young age. Then he got married to a woman like Patralekha. He lost his Shiva too in the process. And now his best friend chose her career over him because of her fears.

« Break all the walls and free your demons. Go back to him and make a lemonade. », Marie-Laure said.
« Sorry ? », Luna didn’t know what she was talking about.
« The entire universe wants you to be with him or else you would have already been in the plane. », she continued while Luna looked at her questioningly. « Well I am going to board. We will meet inside if you want to miss out on a beautiful love story. If not then all the best and it was nice meeting you. », she added.

Perplexed, Luna watched her walk away. Marie-Laure’s words kept resonating in her ears. She didn’t know if she could break the walls to set her demons free like Marie-Laure had suggested. She didn’t know about love but she was definitely hurt for leaving the only best friend she ever had in her entire life. She also didn’t want to be a carbon copy of her father, the man she despised her entire existence. She got up hesitantly unable to decide what to do. Her eyes went down to something that was on the floor. She picked it up. It was Marie-Laure’s restaurant visiting card. Her words haunted her again. She finally encouraged herself to beat her demons and hurriedly left the place. « You can do it. You can do it. », she repeated in her head. Before she could exit to hail a cab, a strange feeling stopped her. Restless she looked around her and spotted Samrat with his head bending down trying to gather his energy to get up and leave. She was dumbfounded. Why was he still there and how did he know she was coming back to him ? She walked towards him and sat down beside him.

« What are you still doing here, Sam ? », she asked.
Her voice startled him, « And what are you doing here ? Did your flight get canceled ? », he asked looking up at her.
« No, I missed the flight… because of you. », she replied.
« Stop your nonsense. », he requested.
« On the contrary, I think for the first time I am talking sense. », she replied. « You wanted me to stay. I am here now. I want to give us a chance. », she continued.
« What ? Is this a joke ? Because it’s a very bad one. Or I am just dreaming and you aren’t here ? », he asked.
She pinched his arm, « Neither is it a joke nor are you imagining me. I am here. For you. »

He leaped up, not sure about understanding anything. She got up and placed herself in front of him.

« Why would you come back for me ? You don’t love me. », he said.
« You don’t listen to me, do you ? I said I want to give us a chance. What else do you want to hear from a nonemotional person like me ? », she asked.
« Moon… I… am not really understanding…», he wanted to tell her something.
« I know it’s quite confusing. I don’t know if I already love you or if I have to learn to love you but I want to give us a chance. That’s all I want. You have to be very patient with me. I don’t even know if I can love you the way you love me. I really hope I won’t be a disappointment in your life like Patralekha has been so far. I won’t be easy to handle. My commitment phobia might trouble us time and again but if you think you have the patience, the courage, the energy and the will then I am here… FOR US. », she confessed.

I think this is the first time I am writing a chapter without SaiRat. I hope you don’t mind.
It was necessary because I didn’t know where I was going with LunRat. Luna was never meant to be a main character. Initially I had the idea of making LunRat the impossible love story, the unspoken one. But everyone wanted to see them together. So it was hard for me to find a way to make Luna change her mind. That’s why I wanted her to give him a chance but be clear about how hard it will be for both of them to maintain their relationship.
