Chapter 5

Meet could feel someone staring at her. Her spidey senses had been tingling since the ladkewaale had set foot in the house. At first, she thought she was going crazy, but then she realized that Lambu (she had started referring to Meet A as Lambu in her head since she had met him) had been staring at her and tracking her ever move. Maybe he thinks I look ridiculous in these clothes, she thought to herself.

Upon great insistence and a tantrum from Manushi who had claimed that since it was her wedding week, everyone would have to listen to her, Meet had agreed to wear Indian clothes for the wedding. Manushi had taken great delight in wrapping her sister in a pale pink lehenga for the engagement ceremony. Thankfully, she had let Meet get away with wearing sneakers since no one would be able to see them under the massive skirt. The dupatta was of course, becoming the bane of Meet’s existence; especially since she had to run around the house overseeing all the work.

She had had a chance to meet Kunal properly and this time around, she hadn’t hit him with a cricket bat. His brother, on the other hand, was probably not going to be so lucky if he kept staring.

Meet had been delighted to see that Tej and Kunal were also related, as she had recognized Tej and he her. The madness that had descended upon the house was making Meet feel like she couldn’t breathe. She left Ram-Lakhan in charge and headed to the terrace to get some fresh air.

Taking a moment to reflect on the day, she thought about how happy Manushi looked, how Kunal’s extended family, the Ahlawats had taken to her sister and were already treating her like a member of their family. Thank you mata rani, she thought as she remembered the relief on her mum and dadi’s face when the Ahlawat’s had stated that they wanted nothing except for Manushi and Kunal’s happiness.

Sighing, Meet was about to rub away the exhaustion in her eyes, when she remembered she couldn’t or she’d end up with racoon eyes because of all the make-up Manushi had painted on her. She was just about to do it anyway when a slight noise behind her made her still.

She rolled her eyes. Of course, she knew who it was.

“Manne pata hai tu idhar hai… chupna band kar” she said.

She didn’t have to turn to know that Meet A had heard her. She heard his footsteps behind her, as he came to stand next to her.

From the corner of her eye, she could see him in all his 6 foot tall glory standing next to her.

“Kyun Lambu, aaj phir cricket bat se maar khaani hai tanne?” she asked.

Meet A laughed softly.

“Nahi nahi. Ek baar kaafi tha. Main… sorry bolne aaya tha” he said.

Meet turned her head to look at him with surprise all over her delicate features. It was the first time she was close enough to him (and the twinkle lights Ram-Lakhan had insisted on putting on the terrace helped as well) to notice that he was actually a very good looking man. The sharp nose, the deep eyes, the hint of stubble – Meet never noticed men and she certainly didn’t have a type, but if she did, it would probably be Meet Ahlawat.

She was snapped out of her thoughts when Meet A cleared his throat.

“Vo actually, humari shuruat hi itni ajeeb hui hai… toh maine socha ki pehle waali baaton ke liye sorry bol deta hoon… aur maybe hum ek fresh start kar sakte hain?” he said tentatively.

“Fresh start matlab?” she asked.

This change in behaviour was surprising, to say the least.

“Dekho, mere bhai aur tumhari behen ki shaadi hone waali hai… family waala rishta toh hai hi, but hum friends bhi toh ban sakte hain na?” he said, his voice growing more confident as he spoke.

Meet looked at him with her eyebrows raised and pretended to think for a moment. She tapped her index finger against her chin, in deep contemplation.

“Chal theek hai, par ek shart par..” she said.

Now it was Meet A’s turn to look confused.

“Kya?” he asked a little worried. From what he had seen of Meet, she could be very unpredictable and he genuinely had no idea where this was going to go.

“Tu phir kabhi meri bike ke saath takkar nahi karega, aur jo accident kiya toh garage ka bill bhi main tanne hi bhejungi” she said cheekily.

Meet A laughed out loud as soon as he heard that.

“Manzoor hai!” he said.

He extended his right hand out towards Meet as he continued to chuckle. Laughing, Meet reached out and shook his hand confirming that from here on out they were going to be friends. It was then that she noticed how somehow despite their massive size difference, her tiny hand fit quite perfectly in his large ones. Weird, she thought to herself, why am I even noticing this?

It was a question she would ask herself again many times in the future.
