I think bollywood movies are not dubbed in south languages. They simply release them as all over India everyone understands hindi.but south movies have to be dubbed.
Even I have heard that about tamilians.My grandfather was in army.His North indian friends had come to our house.They told us that tamilians didn't like them when they spoke to them in hindi.They supported them only when they spoke to them in English.Because they don't really encourage hindi in their state.thats why hindi is not compulsory in their state.But they really respect their north Indian actors.In tamil actresses from Mumbai n other North Indian places are big stars.Even their superstar Rajnikant is a Maharashtrian.
Though malayalees can't speak hindi fluently like telugites n kannadikas,In kerala(cities),people prefer to speak hindi to North indians.i duno whether you know or not there are punjab,gujarati, patan,kachi areas in kerala.So malayalees are close to North indians.i have seen many malayalees (state syllabus) speaking hindi.but their hindi is not perfect.they make grammatical mistakes.But those who studied in non state syllabus speak hindi well.
.I think in tamil nadu those who studied hindi instead of tamil speak hindi.bcz my friend's brother took hindi instead of tamil n he can speak hindi.but like you said very few people can speak hindi there as hindi is not compulsory for them n most of the people take tamil.but there too those who studied in cbse syllabus speak hindi quite well.eg Pushpa actor Allu Arjun.so there is a vast difference between tamil nadu n kerala when it comes to speaking hindi.

Hindi is no more a national language. They (Bollywood) are doing pan-India films today. They are struggling (to find success) by dubbing in Telugu and Tamil, but it’s not happening. Today we are making films that are going everywhere.”
Bold red: He should have avoid saying this especially the struggling word. If not for hindi dubbing I doubt many people will watch in other states. In Andhra, Telangana, Karnataka, many speak Hindi but in Kerala and Tamil Nadu very less people speak Hindi. I heard in Tamil Nadu, people look Hindi people differently. I hope it's not true. Also there is some trend of #NoHindiImposition going on twitter every now and then with this hashtag with many of them hating Hindi language which is not right when even our Gujarati PM talks in Hindi abroad.
