When journalists asked her if she regretted not being married or having kids or Prabhu Chawla shamelessly said 'you did a lot for music and society but did nothing for yourself as you did not get married and every woman wants her own family' - Lata ji replied saying she was too busy and had no time to think for such things and she already did have her family, her siblings and parents were her family, and reiterated she was happy doing her riaz and her work, meditation and social work and felt no regrets.

She was also fond of visiting casinos at Las Vegas and when some Indian journo taunted her and accused her of spoiling image of Indian women by 'gambling', she said she used her own hard earned money and abroad she was free to do whatever she wanted. She'd wear salwar kameez, pants and colourful clothes and do whatever she wanted abroad without bothering about what press said.

And she is the first singer to insist on getting royalties for her songs even at cost of losing work in case producers like Raj Kapoor did not want to give her royalties. Raj Kapoor eventually relented when he saw films would not work without Lata's voice. And she got royalties for her songs.

Lata knew her worth and clearly said she knew the business and demanded the paycheck she deserved. She was never the meek one to settle for whatever she was offered.

Her life is fascinating. She is not only once in a millennium type voice but also a self made, smart, ambitious, professional, tough as nails lady behind the simple, petite frame.

An empire in herself.

Given the outpouring from all nations and across all divides today, it just shows what respect Lata ji earned and commanded. Lata ji is one of biggest epitome of India's soft power and power of music and arts to connect masses across borders.

Thanks for the information...I never knew all this....she indeed was a very strong woman....If you have some pics of her from USA please post it here, I would love to see them.....I was always a fan of her voice and songs but I did not follow her otherwise so there are so many things I am learning now and am being amazed...again Thanks....

I think you should start a thread with all this posts because a lot of people are otherwise missing them..

Lata ji also refused to perform at Filmfare Awards as at that time only music directors were receiving awards. Lataji had a fight with Jaikishan because she refused to perform at Filmfare awards as at that time only music directors were receiving Filmfare awards. Singers and lyricists award categories didn’t exist at that time. 2 years after this fight Filmfare introduced singer and lyricist awards categories.

She stood for her rights and make sure that she got them. Today’s singers are now getting awards and royalties due to her standing up for what singers deserve. Many people call her arrogant but this is always the case when women stand up for their rights.

I being a singer myself...I wasn't into Music when I was a child. But I loved Music. There was only one voice which I was able to identify, that WAS Lataji's voice...

I started Music and heard her songs first, even my teachers are fond of her voice. Yesterday there was supposed to be a musical celebration for us. We had to celebrate the birthday of our Musical institution we postponed our celebration. we weren't able to sing yesterday...

I am into Indian Classical Musical Genre and we all listened to her Mhara Re Giridhar Gopal. We didn't cry, but we were silent. We were lost in her voice...

I will thank my parents that they made me listen her though forcefully as a kid. Slowly I liked her songs. Now listening to the current Bollywood songs...

I feel pity and I'm worried that the audience won't be ever able to experience the power of Great Music. The songs then lacked technological effect, but no technology would ever be able to create her Magic...

Every song of hers, is giving me a nostalgic feeling now...The only song of her which is occupying my mind now is "Mera Saaya Saath Hoga"

"I have listened that a true singer is that who not only sings properly, but who is well is bringing out all the emotions (9 Rasa) She was so simple, yet she has sung Disco Genre songs, she sung Romantic songs, divine songs, patriotic songs. I bet every Indian must have cried, listening to Aye Mere Watan Ke Logo."

GOD GAVE HER A LONG LIFE AS A FORM OF KINDNESS TO MANKIND. SHE ENLIGHTENED MANY PEOPLE MUSICALLY.

MUSIC LOST A GEM, MUSIC LOST A DEVOTEE. MAY SHE ATTAINS SALVATION AND EMBRACES ALMIGHTY FOREVER.

Till yesterday I knew that she was a great singer and for many the greatest playback singer ever 👍🏼 but yesterday I saw her life story and realised, apart from being a great singer she was a very gritty, hardworking woman who took care of her family since the age of 13 and came up in life. I mean 13, can we even imagine 😒? 13 ? 13 is such a young age and to step out of your house to earn money for your brother and sister and mother's sake is something people like me cannot even imagine.

Many of us have potential but very few harness it . She did that⭐️.

Lived her best life, how many of us do that ?

She was humble and respectful and funny but never a simp ☯️.

I know many of us might be immensely sad😒, I have seen it my own house but she has left behind such an inspirational life and a treasure trove of exceptional songs with different composers, singers and writers for us👍🏼 .

Borrowing a line from Anand,

Lata Mangeshkar is not dead, people like Lata Mangeshkar don't die.

❤️
