I think they are confused as to how to go forward. And it's more to do with external factors rather than how they had initially perceived the story to pan out. The love pouring in for Anuj has stumped them a little I think. I feel initially he was brought in to be the wind beneath Anupama's sails. There, but slightly on the outside looking in. But, the viewer response to him (both as an actor and as the character) has been nothing short of phenomenal. The makers want to cash in on that, but there is also their commitment to Sudhanshu. We don't know what promises have been made to him, but sidelining him will never happen.
A major problem has been how they have aligned good and bad. The whiter than white and the blacker than black is something ITV keep falling back on. Each time one character steps out of that zone, he's pulled back in the following track. Writing more rounded characters is tough and when you think of the amount of content they have to churn out, and the fact that TRP is constantly having to be responded to by adjusting tracks, you can see why ultimately no one is happy.
I actually liked the fact that Anuj did not say he will break his partnership with Anu when he was incited to do so. It showed the value he gives to his words. It would have been easy to say, if that's what you want, in the heat of the moment. Confident that Anu would understand. But, that would have been taking away an intrinsic part of who he is. It's an important facet of his character that gives him depth.
Anupama has always been a giver to the ones she loves, ignoring any cost to herself in the process. She was always going to walk away from the business partnership to protect Anuj from the mental turmoil of having to choose between his sister and the love of his life. I'm glad she makes it clear that she's never stepping out of his personal life though.
Anuj is going to need a clear head and strong emotional support to deal with the cunning and manipulative Vanraaj Shah, since it is his fey sister whose involved.
