Aishwarya was dating some other actor Simbhu back in 2004 and he dumped her. She was left heartbroken and apparently knocked up (there are varying accounts of who the father was and I am not sure at what point she started dating D). There was also some leaked MMS of hers with her then boyfriend. Anyway long story short many believe Rajni essentially forced/bribed D's family to marry his daughter. Aishwarya probably saw marriage as a way of saving face in a conservative society back then.

D probably saw the marriage as an opportunity to rise up the ranks in Kollywood by being associated with a big name like Rajni. He was a new actor back then after all.
