It was a celestial moment for both of them.

Virat, a bit better composed courtesy his training was still taken aback at what he saw from such close quarters. Dressed in a tee and rugged denims, she looked like a teenager on vacation. Save for the eyes, which lacked the zeal of life. Unruly hair were unsuccessfully put together with a clutcher. His fingers ached to relegate a rogue stand that had escaped behind her ear. Skin stretched tight over the bony skeleton, she was a shadow of her previous bubbly self.

She slowly raised her hand carrying the tiffin.

“What’s this?” His own voice sounded alien to him. She replied on autopilot.

“Your food. Ma’am said your cook is taken sick so..” The voice, the tone was indifferent. She didn’t care. She was just here for a errand to be run.

He stepped aside and she walked in hesitantly, her mind miles away. How was he? He had been fast asleep when she had smuggled the suitcases to the garden. Then busy elsewhere as she had walked out to the waiting cab. The previous evening, when she had waved her goodbye to him, he had waved back. As if he knew. And glad that she was gone. She was sure of one thing. He was a top ranking police officer and had all the wherewithal of tracing her and getting her back. Then why didn’t he…Not a single message or telephone call even. Had he deleted her from his life?

The clang of metal tiffin hitting the table top was loud and her thought process changed its course. He had watched her move in his room, his hands casually thrust in his pockets. What was he trying to prove? That he was happy? Of course. She looked around for a photograph of his wife adorning his room. Nothing. She was about to turn when one frame caught her attention.

Her Aaba’s photograph!

Quite possible. Her Aaba had been his mentor after all. She smiled bitterly. That one instance when her world came crashing down. How did that impact him? He had offered to do her Aaba’s last rites even.

Pushing the thoughts away, she walked briskly back to the door when his voice stopped her. The soft voice, the husky tone that always tugged at her heartstrings.

“Sai…”

She turned around slowly, her heart beating in her mouth. He was standing somewhere behind her.

“What’s the hurry to go?”

“I have work to do, Sir. And congratulations!” She replied on automaton.

“For what?”

“You got married to the woman you loved, Sir!”

“Ohh Yes. But that was quite some time ago!”

“How is she?”

He chose not to reply. She mentally kicked herself. How many times she had promised herself that she would not infringe on his personal domain?

“Must be fine. May I go now? I have work to do..”

His voice stopped her again.

“Wouldn’t you like to know about her?”

She shook her head as tears welled up in her eyes. She knew already. Then why was he hell bent on torturing her further?

“Its your personal life, Sir. I wouldn’t like to know anything further!”

“She is a doctor!”

Had she heard it right? She whirled around, disbelief written large on her face. He had moved in closer to her.

“Doctor?” Her voice was a little more than a whisper.

“Yes, and her name is Sai Joshi. Dr Sai Joshi!”

***

“Maria Ma’am, where is Sai?” The trio had walked in, their hands full of weekly purchases.

“She has gone next door to give the dinner!” Maria neatly punched the sheets before filing them. She was done with her account handling.

“To give dinner? To whom?”

“The ACP. Their cook has gone down with fever, so Sukhiram offered to cook for both of them!”

“So where is Sukhiram now? And what about our dinner? I am famished!” Rohan queried, his hands rubbing his belly.

Amish echoed his demand. “Yes, Ma’am..we are famished!”

“Not to worry!” Maria ambled around the room. “Sukhiram prepared dinner for all of you and then went to take care of his friend. Then I realized that someone had to take ACP Saab’s dinner also to him and I requested Dr Sai to do the honours!”

The trio thought it over. She had been gone since quite sometime. Should they start dinner without her or wait? They decided the latter option.

“Ok, I will get Sai..” Mithila started off only to be restrained by Maria.

“Leave her alone. She will come back when she has to!”

“But her dinner?” Mithila was singularly confused at the change in Maria’s stance.

“There is a right time and place for everything. And if I am right, she is there!” Maria couldn’t but hide the twinkle in her eye!

***

She stared at him with wide open eyes, confusion writ large on her face. What did he just say? He was not married to Patralekha at all? But why? Didn’t he love her? And with her gone from his life, what was holding him back?

Fingers snapped in front of her and she jerked out of her reverie.

“May I explain?”

She hastily wiped her face and turned away.

He turned her around to look in her eyes. He had to explain himself to her. Leave no space for any misunderstanding. After her exit, he felt broken into two. Moreover, he had to explain to everyone the reason behind the entire thing, including his silence over it. His Aai was still sore over it and till date had not forgiven him.

He led her to the nearest chair and sat next to her, cradling her hands in his own.

“First tell me. How are you?”

She gave a small hiccoughing laugh. He continued further.

“I had assumed so many things, Sai. The day before our anniversary celebration, how I would confess my love, how I would…His voice trailed off. “And when you…you…rejected the whole idea, I felt stabbed. Here, in my heart..” His hand punched his own chest. She looked at him and for the first time saw the lonely and hurt person opposite.

“You turned me down and I realized that you had no feelings for me. It was then I started distancing myself away from you. At times I was even rude to you, ganging against you…And then you applied for the transfer..”

She jerked up at this.

“You knew?”

He nodded slowly.

“The Dean of your college, called me and told me. He also told me that you were not doing well. And if this were to continue, you would never be a dr!”

Her eyes widened at this.

“And I had to let you go. I could have stopped you, but that would have killed your career forever. And I couldn’t afford that. Neither could you!”

She continued it further in a downcast voice. “Yes, I was warned by him to improve otherwise…” She wiped her face painfully. “I applied for this transfer. Walked out of the house. And when you didn’t call, didn’t come looking for me I…I..assumed…” A part of her died that day when she realized that he wasn’t even bothered about her whereabouts. Good riddance to bad rubbish! She was sure that his family members would have walked over her memories. She had shut herself from everyone, singularly focussing on her studies. She had no friends and no enemies. Once or twice her classmates had pulled her to enjoy in a mall. But she had felt like fish out of water and exited the scene. They had given upon her after that.

“But I kept a tab on you through my contacts. I knew exactly where were you, what you were doing…Once I even visited your college just to make sure you are doing fine. I saw you laughing with your friends. You were so happy.. The day you aced your exams, I was so happy and proud. I got a big box of sweets and the entire clan celebrated!”

“Entire clan? You mean the entire family?” She couldn’t believe her ears.

“Yes. Aai cooked all your favourite dishes. She begged me to get you back. But I couldn’t…obviously. When you didn’t have anything to do with me…How could I..”

She sushed him with a finger on his lips. His face was wrung in despair. The bitter memories of the anniversary celebrations were etched forever in his mind. What all she had said and implied that day…even doubted his character! And the days that followed..

Tears welled up in her eyes as she continued in a small voice.

“I never wanted to break your heart. Believe me..I never wanted to hurt you. But when the Yoga instructor spoke about you and Pakhi Didi, what a wonderful pair you made…I felt that I was a stumbling block in your life. As it is, you were committed to her. Our marriage was a sham to start with..my feelings had no place in that deal! And so I…I said all those things that day…I didn’t want to…But still..” Her own eyes brimmed over at the thought. The hurt in his eyes had been too much to bear.

She walked to her father’s photograph, aware of the fact that he had followed her.

“Your feelings?”

“Yes. Actually long before our marriage, I overheard Aaba and Usha Maushi talking at the dinner table. Aaba was telling her about you, what a promising pupil you had been and now posted at the same place. Aaba even said that he saw a son in you. Usha Maoshi even suggested an alliance for me!”

His eyes widened.

“It was then that I stormed in and gave both of them a piece of my mind. Marriage, love and the worldly affairs were the last thing in my mind. First and foremost, I wanted to become a dr. Before that, Aaba would retire and we were going to set up a house in Nagpur. But then…it was not to happen that way...”

Virat flinched at the memory.

“He took the bullet meant for me. Had it not been for him, it would have been me in the mortuary..”

Her eyes widened in horror and she rushed to restrain him.

“Virat Sir! Please don’t…! I agree..our marriage didnt happen on cordial terms. I hated you for all that I could. But you still supported me, helped me…the wounds healed. I started liking you. When you got shot I was shattered from within. The fact of losing you…the fear of being orphaned once again..was absolutely terrifying. The warm cocoon that came with the feeling of belonging, owning, commitment…I never knew. Then one fine day I…I…realized it to be love. But then that was something I was not entitled to. You were committed to someone else and I decided to withdraw quietly from your life…”

His hands rose to cup her face and he looked deep in her eyes.

“Do you still feel that way? Do I still need to prove my love?”

Her legs gave away.

“Virat Sir..” Was all that she could muster before burying her face in his shoulder. He was obviously in no better shape either. His hands pulled her close and he rested his chin against her head as she shuddered and heaved her bitterness. Words were not needed at this point.

It was long after that she pulled herself away from him. But he was not done with her yet.

“Sai..will you promise me something?”

She looked at him with inquisitive eyes.

“I may not be perfect. You may not be perfect. We all have our flaws and plus points. We will fight, argue, feel happy, feel sad..these are the ups and downs of life. We might even throw things at each other. But we will continue to be with each other. We will never ever call it quits!”

“I promise, Virat Sir..” She muttered solemnly.

“Finally, you just said that our marriage was not on a cordial note. That was history and we cannot turn the clock back. But now, once again, if I ask, will you marry me?”

She struggled to be free. Running away from him, she replied with a hint of mischief in her eyes.

“Only if Aaba agrees!”
