“Bolo, now I even have to make tea for myself!” Baa cursed, swinging on her seat.
“Anupama not only has started to fly herself, but she is also imparting her attitude to Kinjal! Both the maharani went on a vacation and I have to work!” She huffed then, taking a sip of her tea.
Nandini and Samar had gone for some performance in Jaipur, and her husband and bhailo had tagged along with that GK to some place in Rishikesh. It was all due to that Anuj!
“Atleast, he could not tell Anupama what he wanted to!” Baa shook her head then, and raised her eyes to look at the main door, only to see Toshu step in with his bags in tow.
Seeing her grandson’s crestfallen face, Leela roused from her swing and met him halfway.
“What happened?” She asked patting his shoulder, and he grimaced.
“Kinjal’s mom sacked mefrom the job, citing that my work was not up to the standards of dave excellency!”
Before Leela could react,it was vanraj who exploded as he overheard his son.
“How dare she do this to my son!” He roared, but ignoring him, all Toshu did was dash towards his room. It’s been 3 days since he was dismissed and none of the companies he had went to interview for, took him.
These were the lot of em,he had shunned drunk on his mother-in-law’s power and now they wanted none of him.

That evening, while Anuj was chatting with a random friend, Kinjal’s message popped up and curious, he opened it to see that she had sent him pictures. His eyes widened before softening, as an equally soft smile stretched on his lips. There she was, posing in front of statue of liberty; shaking a leg with some dancer on the street and in the next one, Anuj laughed then- she and Kinjal were eating ice cream, and her nose was smeared with cream.
“So adorable!” Anuj continued to chuckle as he went on to look at another picture. She was in the meeting room then, in conversation with others. Kinjal had clicked this one from outside, he was sure.
Anuj smiled. He had been feeling absolutely sluggish today but seeing her, had lifted his mood altogether.
“If only I could hear her too!” Anuj mused and then shook his head to shrug the thought away. However he suddenly paused. He could hear her. She was his friend, business partner, his soon-to-be-w—
“Just hold on!” Anuj shouted abruptly screech halting his thoughts, “Jyada bold banne ke chakkar main kahin knockout na ho jaun”.
Friend. Business partner. I can call. No issues
“I can call!” Grinning, he dialed her number but when it was time to press the icon, he hesitated. What should he say? What if she is busy? What if he makes it awkward? They had barely patched up. Just because she had forgiven him, didn’t necessarily mean his 15 days of terrible behavior was water under the bridge.
“Oh God!!” Anuj groaned frustrated and super confused. Conviction or consequence?
While he was reeling between his heart and his head, his phone came alive and without taking note of the caller id, he picked the call.
“Hello?”
“Anuj?”
“A-Anu?!” Anuj stammered ashe heard the familiar voice, his face bright as a beam.
“Haan main! Why are so surprised? Are you busy? Main baad main—
“No!” Anuj shouted suddenly, shaking his head in negative, and then realized that he had overreacted in his excitement.“I mean, I am free.As a fact, I took an off today so…we can talk if you want to”.
“Off? You are ok, na?”Anupama asked concerned. Seated on a plush chair in Anuj’s cabin, on the 26th floor of X building in the posh soho square, she was overlooking the bustling roads and towering skyscrapers.
He had not called her once. He had called in the head office to pass instructions but he had not called her. This irked her a bit, ok….a lot actually. But what could she do? She was so accustomed to his presence, that his absence was unnerving her. The misunderstanding between them had resolved fairly recently, and that made her all the more jittery. She didn’t want him distancing himself from her once more.
She was still unaware of his reasons to do so. What he had given her had been a mere excuse that she had bought solely to make him feel at ease. It had all happened on the evening he had asked her to meet for dinner. The manner in which he had refused to meet her gaze as he had dropped Pakhi off hadn’t gone unnoticed by her. She had let it slide just for show, but her brain was hell bent on uncovering his lies, and Pakhi’s weird behavior too. She was sure of one thing, he was protecting her but she didn’t want any of that. She didn’t want him to get hurt.
This was how she knew that he wasn’t going to call, probably more concerned about her schedule and such. Typical. And so she had, because she wanted to make sure that he was fine and not being burdened by his secrets in solitude and now, the workaholic Kapadia was talking about an off. It worried her.
Anuj was silent for a moment, as he basked in the worry behind her voice. “I am fine, Anu. Bas thoda mann nah—
Anuj paused then, a mischievous smile coming on his lips as he added, “Lagta hai koi mujhe bahot miss kar raha tha? Hmm”
She smiled then. He had made her flustered last time. Payback was in order.
“Ofcourse, mujhe aapki bahoooot yaad aa rahi hai. I miss you,Anuuuj!”
“I— Anuj’s adam applebobbed as his name rolled off her tongue. He wasn’t expecting that.
“Kitna acha hota agar aap yahan hote”, Anu smiled slyly as she could tell from the silence that he was gobsmacked.
“I—
“Hum saath main aapki favourite places explore karte”, She added next, her chest feeling strange.
Anuj cleared his throat,his head now full of him by her side, as he showed her around New york- infront of liberty, putting cream on her nose…
“Main aaya”, His tongue had not consulted his brain before speaking.
“Wha—
It was Anu’s turn to stammer as she heard him.She had been teasing him but her partner, sounded way too serious.
“I-I was jesting Anuj! Aapko kaam hai wahan aap isliye nahi aaye”, Anupama spoke flabbergasted, her heart thumping.
Her words bought him to reality and Anuj felt mortified on realizing that she had been pulling his leg,and he had let her.
“You sure?”
“Kisliye?”
“Agar tum kahogi toh main aa jaunga, sab kuch chodkar”, his voice dipped while he swiped air india’s webpage.
Anupama caressed her stomach, puzzled. It was starting to feel funny in there.
“Y-you are lying”, She murmured in response. Suddenly the mood of the conversation had shifted.
“Would never”, Anuj spoke in a beat before he paused, on recalling that he had. After a while, he added, “unless my hand was forced”.
Anupama was sure now. There was a third person. And as far as she could connect, she didn’t like the direction it was pointing to.
“Anu…”
“Hm?”
“Try me. Your wish will be my command. So just…try me”, His voice had lowered to a whisper now, and a shiver travelled down Anupama’s spine.
By this point, Anuj wasn’t the only one daydreaming. Anupama couldn’t help but think too, how nice it would be if he was here.
She looked towards his chair in the cabin then, and found him lounging in it relaxed as he winked at her.
Anupama rubbed her eyes,shocked and then looked again. He was walking towards her now.
“Aap…sach mein....yahan”,She got up from her seat and looked at him.
“Kaha tha na…try me”, With that he gingerly brought his hands toward her face and she pinched her eyes shut.
“Anu? Anu? You there?”
“ANUPAMA!”
“Hain…haan…haa..main”, her eyes flew open suddenly, and she looked around the empty cabin bewildered. Wasn’t Anuj here just a moment ago?
“Anu?”
She touched the Bluetooth headset then, and realized that Anuj was there, on the other side of call, back in Ahemdabad.
Did she..Did she just imagine him?
“Anu…listen, agar workload zyada hai toh mai—
“No Anuj. You didn’t come because you had something to do. You promised, no more burdening yourself. I will handle it here…so just…please just be at ease”.
“If you say so”, He smiled and she cut the call citing a meeting at 12.
He would be lying if he said that he wasn’t saddened by her refusal. But he had felt the sway in her tone. Something had shifted in that conversation. He hadn’t taken his chances for naught, he knew. It had been her sense of responsibility that had stopped him.
Anuj smiled, pacing around in his room. Getting back at Shah’s wasn’t as important as her. It was a mere necessity, not a priority. He knew he only had one.
Just few more days
She could not concentrate.At all. On entering the meeting room, her resurrected imagination had yet again conjured another Anuj Kapadia and this one was mighty persistent. Anu tried hard to focus on the presentation in front. But her mirage of Anuj was seated right by her side and boring holes into her face with his gaze.

Anupama scrubbed her face hard. Just what in the heaven’s name had befallen her?
So, somehow i was planning on writing the next part of plan but what was supposed to be written as few lines, ended up occupying the entire part😆. Do share, how you liked it!
