Most people felt that it was the best song that HR has released and Sawai sang it very well.

Also, there was a lot of fan sentiment attached to the release because Sawai had just been eliminated.

All songs need an initial attachment of many to start to spread. This song got that attention.

My thoughts, I have not dwelt deeply into the song's progress.

I think you are right. And the manipulation came with a lot of help from TCT as well - for they were the ones who told the contestants what to sing and what not.
