Public ki popular demand par, Part 2 is being posted, vo bhi loong wala. Kripya apne views taiyaar rakhein. So, here goes!
Part 2
âAnujâ, Anupama knocked at the cabin door and the man looked up from his files and nodded.
Anupama walked in, awkward and hesitant. Anuj who had gone back to his files, looked up again to find her fiddling with her fingers. He sighed. What had he done?
He shut the file, pushed his chair back and moved around the desk to come face to face with Anupama. She still wasnât looking at him.
Anuj bit his lips then, and sent a prayer to god. â Ye mera anu se bola hua, pehla aur aakhri jhooth hoga. This is for usâ
âI am sorry Anupamaâ
She looked up suddenly as Anuj apologized out of the blue.
âAap kis liyeâŠâ
âFor hurting you, Anu. We- we are friends but suddenly I decided to cut you off. Aur main chahkar bhi tumhe kuch nahi bata paya. Iâm so so sorryâ, and Anuj hung his head.
âKuch hua tha kya Anuj?â Anupama asked then seeing how his words were hinting at a hidden reason.
Anuj grit his teeth as he recalled snippets of conversation with Devika. Haa Anu, Dhokha hua hai hum dono ke sath.
âAnuj?â Anupama called out again and he snapped out, nodding. âHaan, the thing is our head office in US was under financial crunch so I was planning on dropping the idea of the hotel. And I just couldnât dare to meet your eyes, like I had promised you the sky but was going to take your chance away. Iâm sorryâ.
A deafening silence dawned as Anuj waited for Anupama to respond. It was after what felt like ages, did anuj hear anupama speak up.âHaan, you should be sorryâ,Anupama nodded and then glared at him, âDost kaha, partner kaha bas mana hi nahi. Agar samjha hota toh akele itni badi baat ka bojh nahi uthateâ.
âBojh toh tum utha rahi ho unn ehsaan faramoshon kaâ
âSahi kaha tumne. Iâm extremely apologetic for keeping you out of the loop. Now, will I have my forgiveness?â Anuj tilted his head and Anu who had turned away, now spared him a glance from the corner of her eyes. And in that moment, how relieved she felt no one couldâve imagined. Anuj had become her respite, that one place where she wasnât walking on eggshells.
She turned to look at him completely, as he held his ears by crossing his arms and whispered a âpleaseâ.Anupama felt a smile tugging at her lips, the one Anuj had distanced from her when he had distanced himself.
Anupama nodded then, and followed with a warning, âAage se aapne kuch aisa kia toh!â
Anuj raised his hands in surrender then, in mock fear and shook his head vehemently.
How could she not chuckle when this person always indulged her?
Anuj then pinched his throat and smiled sincerely, âNever again, I promise!â
This camaraderie felt like a sin.Somewhere it was the fault of baaâs constant chants and somewhere her own. After all his absence had made everything feel dreary and now as he cutely pleaded his case, everything felt charming.
âNow that apologies are out of the order, letâs talk work. Shall we?â Anuj rubbed his hands and as Anu nodded, he nodded too.
âGreat then. So, Anu I want you to go to US as my proxyâ, Anuj dropped the bomb as if it was the weather he was discussing, and waited as Anu nodded first, her eyebrows furrowed second before his words registered with her and she let out a shocked, âKya? US! Main kyu? KeseâŠâ
âMain what?â It was Anujâs turn to glare her way as her crossed his arms over his chest and dared her to repeat herself. Anu bit her lips then. Anuj wasnât a fan of the the very little faith anupama showed in her own abilities considering how highly he thought of her ambitions. So the man had made a point of chiding her every time she would lower herself.
âMain kya, Anupama?!â He raised his brows questioningly and Anu groaned. He was stubborn.
âMainâŠkyu nahin? Main kyun nahin ja sakti US! No b-big dealâ, Anupama completed as Anuj clapped his hands, pleased.
âExcellent! Thatâs my girl!â It was his turn to bite his tongue as Anupama looked at him surprised before he swiftly changed the topic.
âSo as I was saying, basically tumhe wahan jakar hotel ki progress report karni hai, you know like an overview. And while you are at it, tumhe wahan ki performance ki bhi report leni hai. Simple enough right! You have been a part of enough meetings now to understand how these things goâ
âBut Anuj, wahanâŠ.angrezo ke samneâŠ.unseâŠ.main keseâŠmatlab agar koi problemâŠho gayi toh?â She asked him worried.
âThere would be no problems. Tum meri partner ho and you will be going as my stand in. You will be treated the way I am. And rest assured, Iâve made all the arrangementsâ.
âPar itni doorâŠakeleâŠâ Anupama murmured as Anuj smiled.
âTum akeli kahan ho. Main hamesha tumhare saath hoonâ.
âKuch kaha aapne?â Anu asked, all too aware of what was to follow. His classic, âBol du! Bol du!! Fir kabhiâ.
âI was saying that you are not alone. Main hamesha tumhare saath huâ, Anuj answered leaving anupama speechless.
Usually, Anuj would never have said something so clichĂ© to anuâs face. But he was a changed man now. He was going to be more forward and more bold.
Anupama looked at him confused as he met her stare head on. The usual him would have looked away as he adjusted and readjusted his glasses.
As propriety required, if not him she shouldâve clearly looked away but she was too busy in deciphering his eyes.
It was the ringing of intercom, that forced their gazes to break. While Anuj looked away, smiling goofily,Anupama flicked herself for doing something weird.
âYesâŠOh they are here!Great, send them inâ And disconnecting the phone, Anuj turned to Anu. âTumhare akele jaane ki problem ka bhi solution ho gaya haiâ.
And soon a knock followed,as the door was pushed inside and someone stepped in.
Anupama looked surprised as that person was revealed to be her daughter in law. âKinjal?â
Kinjal smiled while Anuj went over to his chair and sat down, urging the two to sit themselves too.
âYou resigned from your last job right?â As Kinjal nodded Anuj nodded suit. âPerfect! So as I had told you over the phone, I will be sending Anu to states on an official visit and since she has agreed, the only pressing issue is regarding who will accompany her. And I was thinking you are the perfect candidate for the job. While youâre at it, you can have a look at our work culture, and if it appeals to you and we can come to an agreement, I will be more than happy to have a young talent on boardâ.
Kinjal found herself in deep thoughts. Anuj leaned back as he threaded his fingers, âApologies in advance Kinjal, but youâll have to rush your decision. If you have any qualms, I can always send someone elseâ.
Kinjal looked at Anu, and then at Anuj. This was a golden opportunity for her, and mummy. She had nothing to lose, and mummy had a lot of exposure to gain.
âIâll do it!â
âPerfect!â Anuj stood up then, as he unbuttoned his coat, while picking the phone with other hand and typing a message.
âIâll have you guys informed as soon as the arrangements for trip are madeâ. He then looked at his watch and continued, âItâs already lunch time so AnuâŠhum baaki details lunch ke baad discuss karte hainâ.
Anupama nodded as she got up and walked out. Kinjal followed after her too but was stopped by Anuj.
âOne sec, Kinjalâ
She turned around to Anujâs call while he waited a beat until the door was completely closed. Finally, he pulled out a card from his pocket and forwarded it to Kinjal. â For shoppingâ
Kinjal nodded, albeit a bit confused, âAap mujhe message kar dena ki kya lana and Iâ
Anuj interrupted her then with a chuckle, âAh no! You misunderstand. Itâs not for me but for Anuâ
âJi?â
âYes, you have to be more aware about anuâs likes and dislikes. So buy her anything she likes, anything she could likeâŠlike anything, alright! Money is not an issue. Uski har khwaish poori honi chahiyeâ.
Kinjal looked a bit worried then as Anuj said all this.
âIâm not a face reader, but I assure you that you and I both want the same thing, Anuâs happinessâ.
Kinjal nodded then, still troubled though. âBut mummyâŠaapki money seâŠ.you know how she isâ.
âPreciselyâ, Anuj acknowledged and continued, âThatâs where you come in the play. This is an all-expense paid company trip. And if this doesnât convince her, you should. Oh, and do make sure she is not overworking herself. Itâs her first overseas trip, she should enjoy it â.
Kinjal nodded, âIâll try my bestâ.
âThank youâ, Anuj nodded and turned around to attend to the files on his desk.
âEk sawal tha, aap mummy ke saath kyun nahi jaa rahe?â
Anuj turned to her amused. âTrust me, I really wanted to accompany her. But I must see to the plan here on priorityâ.
Kinjal nodded one last time as she walked out of his cabin. She was half convinced that Anuj kapadia cherished mummy more than just a friend.
While flipping through the files, Anuj pondered to himself.
âJyada toh nhi ho gaya?â He then recalled the eyelock and found his focus wandering. âFocus, you lovestruck idiot. Focus!!â
âAnuj?â
A sudden call from behind started him as Anuj jumped. Anupama bit her lips to control her smile as the man looked scared the first moment, embarrassed the second as he tried to go back to his poised state in the third.
âHaan?â He replied finally, his classic action of setting his impeccable hair in motion.
âLunch saath main karein?Bahot din ho gaye hainâ. Anupama asked, still at the door.
A very very dumb smile started to make its way onto Anujâs face as Anupama said that. Quickly realizing that his face was betraying too much, he schooled his expressions and nodded, âSureâ.
As the door shut after Anupama,Anuj grinned widely as he thrust his fist into the air.
âAapne bulaya aur hum chale aaeâ, He murmured stupidly as he walked out of the cabin.
I'm hoping you folks will enjoy the read. And if you do, don't forget to share your views coz that's my fuelđ
