India is a sub-continent because it was not a part of Asian continent. It was large piece of land drifted apart from Gondwana and became a part of the Eurasian mass. It fused with Asian continent due to continental drift. Actually only the part to the south of Himalayas is sub-continent region. When you say Indian sub-continent, you include countries like Bhutan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Maldives, Sri Lanka.
