It's because the character has so many shades that in each of his interactions with various people you get to see something slightly different. He behaves with them according to their nature and the event in question. Also, the fact that he himself is on the gray side helps him deal with the baddies because he doesn't have to stick to the typical good hero/ITV ML boundaries of conduct. He doesn't have to follow rules in terms of behavior and words. That gives him leeway to teach people a lesson in a way that typical heroes don't have the flexibility to do, especially if they are bound by social norms.
