I think Atharva was not supposed to be villain but after audience rejected(TRP was low) Kalyani-Atharva jodi Kalma ko main couple aur Atharva ko villian baana dia.The makers of THR tried to create love story/romance between Atharva-Kalyani during the initial days of THR but it didn't worked.
