Well that's a reach tbh. I don't know man.. The whole 9/11 thing had nothing to do with BJP propaganda, it just doesn't fits because not just Muslims but mostly entire South Asian community got villainised in the aftermath of the attacks. The hatred and fear for anything that resembled western idea of "terrorist" was at peak. Here "Indians" or Hindus were not the villains but Americans were ( for us) so yeah I really don't see how RSS Or BJP would have found any thing to pick in that? What would they protest against? Don't show Muslims in a movie? I mean they are bunch of extremist but they aren't that dumb.

This was an awful movie that capitalised on the whole Fawad issue. I bet had it not been for that whole drama the movie would have crossed even 60 cr. It was probably most talked about movie of 2016 in media for all wrong reasons. Kjo had to say goodbye to his eye candy but still made money

BJP didn't have any power when MNIK released but Shiv Sena caused a lot of destruction back then. There were huge protests, Thakerays causing problems, buses were set on fire, there were threats to people going to theaters, etc. SRK was stuck in Europe and Gauri and Suhana had to go to Mumbai theaters with cops to prove that it was safe and people could go.

Today BJP wouldn't even let it release. They wouldn't have even let movies like Chak De India get a decent release without all the bigots like Yogi jumping in to cause problems.

And what was their reason behind such hungama? I don't think movie suffered in any way because of that. Even now with BJP ruling the movie would have released. I don't understand from where all these extreme assumptions are coming. I mean yeah I agree there are bunch of extremist who create trouble all the time but still I don't see any ban on the bold web series like Patallok despite all the drama. So why would normal movies like Chak de or MNIK won't be allowed to release? I don't see any RW even mention these movies as problematic.

They would all release, if Paatal Lok and Asur could release, which which were full on demonisation of Hindus, then these movies you listed are nothing.

SRK had said Pakistani cricketers should be allowed to participate in the IPL so Bal Thakeray and his goons attacked the movie and said they wouldn't let it release.

Patal Lok released on streaming and didn't have any big stars in it. They deliberately attack movies with big stars so they can piggyback off it. Saif isn't even a big deal but they caused huge problems for Tandav. But streaming anyway is much harder to attack but they do cause issues. They harassed Amazon enough that they had to delay releasing Family Man 2 for months after the original release date.

The movies are old which is why the right wing doesn't mention them now because there's nothing to gain from it. But going forward, if newer movies had those themes, they would go crazy. The BJP even jumped into the Kaabil-Raees clash and said lots of disgusting things about SRK/Raees and tried to create enmity. It's not just about one movie. Nobody succeeds that quickly. It's about systematically going after certain themes, topics, and people until they get scared. It happens slowly over time.

Regarding PaatalLok, I found it to be more depressing than Hindu-phobic.

I don't Chak De India would be problematic even today, but My Name is Khan certainly would've landed in unnecessary trouble.🤪

We all know what happened after 911, and we know it had anything to do with BJP, but just the possibility of showing muslims as victims would've caused backlash from several RW extremists, as they are very good at diverting the narrative.

Today, these social media bots can find problems even in a harmless Tanishk ad. You're under-estimating their power.

Actually I should've titled this topic more carefully. Don't misunderstand 'won't be released' as complete ban. I meant more on the lines of films that would be 'cancelled' or 'hard to get released' in today's climate.
