the custom of marriage with mama bhanji does not exist for the entire South. this is again region specific..(no fingers at all to the sentiments attached, just for information sake)
No offence.. but generally 'south' get tagged as one territory..but the culture with in varies widely too..
Although first cousin marriages existed.. mostly in a previous generation..uncle niece is seen as a forbidden one in some other parts of south.. I can say with respect to the ancestral culture of Kerala.. In fact in early era there was a prevelant rule of inheritnce called 'marumakkathayam' .. the inheritence law was through niece or nephew....so as somebody already told.. keeping property intact with family was a major reason..

When I mentioned South India i did mean major south indian territory..Caz couples i have seen are from atleast 2 states.. thanks from correcting my facts..
N when I mentioned about this custom i did not want to convey any disgust (yes I thought it is disgusting when I was school kid) but later I got some more clarity... Again like how were customs around menstruation designed to give a rest to women blindly amended.. this marriage custom is similarly blindly amended.. won't go into details here...
